Now that X1 is basically being stripped of any exclusives, is there much of a reason to own one other than just preferring console experience to PC? To be honest, I don't really like it. I feel like my X1 purchase was a waste. First, X1 has inferior hardware even compared to PS4. The redeeming qualities it had was the iconic franchises like Halo, Forza, Gears. But now I can play them on PC. On top of that, I have to pay for Live? One may think they can make a similar argument against PS4, but the PS4 has still done a much better job at making itself a must own console this gen. Sony's first party is still very strong and Sony has great support from Japan. And at least when you pay for online, you get perks like the games and also the discounts. I gotta say, Xbox has turned into a major flop this gen. Wouldn't you agree, SW?

I have a feeling the Next Xbox will just be a Prebuilt PC with Windows X. (with Microsoft Market place turning into Xbox Live and will compete with Steam)

I remember a time were the reason to get a console was Halo,Forza Fable...That reason doesn't exist any more.

The only people that care about exclusives are the minority who actually play silly meta games that have been largely redundant anyway this gen. Making more games more accessible to more people should only be considered a good thing. If somebody no longer has to purchase hardware they dont wish to purchase in order to play a game they do...then that is fantastic for them. I like the MS push to create a seamless eco system across its tech lines. If a game goes from being an Xbone exclusive to a Microsoft exclusive then im not going to cry about it. Its more money in the kitty to make more games.

It's a great thing if MS goes all the way with it. Have cross play is a great thing, more people to play game, gaming companies make more money which in turn means more and better games. I think it's a big plus, can't wait to see more people on KI and looking to get Halo Wars 2 also because of cross play.

It's good for those that don't want to buy an x1, but as an owner of all the systems, the x1 is now very redundant. If I had've known this was going to be the MS strategy, I wouldn't have bought the x1 and just bought those games on pc. I understand the strategy, I just wish they were upfront about it so I could've saved $400.

Unless all potential Xbox One owners suddenly decide to build gaming Rigs, I think the Xbox One will be alright

If Uncharted 4 was also coming to PC, I'd still rather buy a PS4 to play it

To me, I like having more options, cross play is really a good thing so that gamers have the options to have cross play and we see more gamers playing on PC, not limited.

Sorry but I don't think there won't be another Xbox console. MS looking to get out of the console business from the way things are going, so my best guess is that MS will just make software games.

That's because MS run those games to the ground when enough is enough. Halo, Forza, Fable, Gears, ect should have ended on Xbox 360.

@davillain-: That's basically what I was getting at.

The Xbox Brand will still exist but will likely merge with the Windows platform.

It's a good thing for me, exposes the games to a bigger audience so they can make more money, I like the idea of cross platform gaming. A lot of PS4 games are also available for PC. Yeah you have games like Uncharted 4 for example that will most certainly remain a PS4 exclusive. Xbox One may have less of those now, but it changes nothing for me in terms of console identity because If I want to play a game like Quantum Break on console, I cannot do it on PS4. The identity of the console used to be determined mostly by the games, but now it's also about the online experience, the community, etc

We shall see in time how the pieces will come together, but for now I'm optimistic about it and see nothing in the near future that will negatively affect my gamimg experience.

there will always be a market for consoles.. consoles are cheaper, easier to maintain, easier to set-up, and they compliment a living room environment more readily than a gaming PC.. That said, my Xbox One and any future consoles will always have a place under my television..

As far as combining the platforms, it's definitely a good thing.. For example, I've always been a console gamer.. I've never seriously considered playing on PC.. I always understood that there's a higher graphical ceiling on PC but it wasn't worth it to me if I had to separate my gaming.. To explain, I play most of my games on my console, in my living room.. that's my preference and that is not going to change.. and if I buy a PC, I will have to spend a certain percentage of my gaming time tied to certain PC titles because they can only be played on my PC in my office (unless I use some type of streaming solution, but 1) if we're arguing about 4k graphics and etc, why would I settle for streaming when I can play native on my 4k monitor? and 2) i'm not hooking my PC directly up to my living room TV and 3) I don't have a 4k TV in my living room). I also will miss out on playing online with my console friends because i'd be playing a PC game that's likely tied to a Steam account that I couldn't give a crap about.. I don't care to start a new and separate username with separate friends and separate achievements on Steam.. I'd rather just play and party chat with the Xbox Live friends i already have and grow the achievements i already have.. again, that's my preference.. And up until now, those reasons alone was enough for me to not give a crap about PC gaming.. Until now..

Now, I can potentially buy a game once and that game will be available on both my PC and my Xbox One.. Not two different versions of the same game.. the same game.. I'm not tied to the PC anymore because I bought a PC game on Steam.. I bought a Windows 10 game from the Windows Store and now I can play that game in 4k on my PC if I want and when I want to relax on the couch, I can pick up right where I left off on the Xbox One.. All my game saves, friends list, achievements, game feed, party chat invites, online multiplayer, and more are all shared between the two.. I don't lose anything from my Xbox Live experience regardless of if I'm playing alone in my office or if I have company and I'm playing in the living room..

One game, one platform, two devices..

I can tell you right now, thanks to this announcement, once the Windows Store on PC and the Windows Store on Xbox One are officially combined for universal cross-buy and cross-save, I'm building a high-end PC that's ready for 4k graphics and Oculus Rift.. I've already priced the build and I'm just waiting to pull the trigger.. Because at that point, I can finally enjoy the higher grade graphics of PC gaming without separating my experience from the console ecosystem I'm already invested in.. it's a win/win and I cant wait..

I don't think they should have ended, but rather taken a little break between release to foster some fresh ideas.

The way i see it is PC gaming is fantastic and getting better everyday without Xbox, and consoles were better when they were more distinct from PCs..

Im crossing all my fingers the NX is a traditional console because an Xbox computer makes me wanna puke, as does a Playstation TV or streaming service.

I think it's fantastic, one of the best things to happen to gaming structurally in a long time. Should make things a lot smoother for developers, which is great given how games are becoming increasingly complex and devs are clearly struggle to do clean releases. There will be a lot less peaks and valleys but a much more stable industry. Stability allows for more risk taking.

I'm not sure if they knew tbh. I think a change in leadership and the fact X1 was beaten by Ps4 may be factors that pushed them in this direction.

Me personally, if you have a high-end gaming PC and are looking to get a console to compliment your gaming, I would recommend getting an Xbox One.. With cross-buy/cross-save, the games you buy on one can be played on both.. The proposition there in terms of value is obvious.. Also with a universal gamertag, the friends you make, the party invites you get, and the online multiplayer you participate in are unified on both.. You're not tied to your PC and you're not tied to your console.. You can freely float back and forth on both, pick up where you left off, and your online experience is the same..

that's my preference and it would definitely be my recommendation..

I think it's great. Microsoft needs to drop the fee for gold if they expect me to ever turn on the Xbone again after my subscription expires, though.

Multiplats are the way of the future.

It's been happening for a long time now. The days of high budget console exclusives are long behind us.

This does raise a question though, will PS4/PC exclusives show up in the Windows Store?.. logically moving forward, at a minimum, Windows Store games will be tied to an Xbox Live account, have achievements, and will be integrated with the Xbox App..

for the sake of argument, lets say an indie developer makes his game for PC first but can only support one console in time for launch so they chose the PS4.. So the game is PS4/PC exclusive.. If that developer doesn't want to limit themselves to the Steam store and wants to also put their game in the Windows Store, isn't that game technically now tied to the Xbox ecosystem as well?..

It's probably too soon for this to happen but if No Man's Sky was released in the Windows Store for PC, would I be playing that game with my XBL gamertag and adding its Acheivements to my gamerscore?.. Will my Xbox One friends see me online in their friends list playing "No Man's Sky"?

Pretty interesting and i'm curious how those scenarios play out as they will become more likely down the line as the Windows Store continues to grow..

The implications being that as a XB1/PC owner, I could potentially play PS4/PC games complete with my XBL gamertag and receive achievements as if I was playing that game on the Xbox One console.. interesting indeed lol..

It's WIndows 10 only, Windows Store only, forced Vsync, bad ports and no mods you can't even go and modify the files. With all these limitations these games won't sell well MS is stupid

Pretty interesting and i'm curious how those scenarios play out as they will become more likely down the line as the Windows Store continues to grow..

No and why would they?

Why would Sony let MS have money off the games they make?

My point is that what if Sony doesn'tmake the game?.. I'm not talking about Sony 1st party exclusives here.. I'm not even talking about 3rd party exclusivity deals like Capcom made with SFV.. I'm sure at that point, Sony may try to make a contract agreement for that game to only release on Steam..

I'm talking about an indie developer that literally made their game PS4/PC only simply because they could not support making the game for all three system at the same time and chose to make it for PS4 first because of the higher install base.. If they put that game in the Windows Store, will I essentially be getting a "head start" before the cross-buy/cross-save unlocks for the Xbox One version?.. Or will that never be a problem again since Win10/DX12 games will essentially be the same to develop for on both the PC and Xbox One anyway?.. Or maybe a large 3rd party developer that decides that their exclusivity agreement with Sony for PS4/PC doesn't also extend to the restricting the game from Windows Store on PC?.. What happens if a PS4/PC exclusive ends up in the Windows Store?..

I mean, it's easy to dismiss this idea today with Steam's dominance but what about a couple years from now?.. Steam is a juggernaut but things change.. the Windows Store is integrated into every single Windows 10 PC.. no matter what, that's going to eventually dwarf the attach rate for Stream.. Developers are going to be hard pressed to ignore a storefront that literally has a 100% attach rate for the Win10/DX12 game they just developed.. When that happens, what happens to PS4/PC exclusives?.. Will I be playing those games on my PC with my XBL gamertag and Achievements while party chating with my XBL buddies?..

Pretty interesting..

I guess the access to a larger game pool on a PC/PS4 combo is negligible?

My personal situation is that I posess a LONG 15m hdmi cable and game on HDTV and PC desk seemlessly (wireless controllers and STEAM big picture mode)

It is very doubtful that a Xb1/PC combo will cover the library deficit...compared to PS4/PC one.

Wouldn't you agree, SW?

there will always be a market for consoles.. consoles are cheaper, easier to maintain, easier to set-up, and they compliment a living room environment more readily than a gaming PC..

For me, it's great! With the rumor of Forza and Gears 4 coming to PC I no longer have to own a XB1. I'm putting mine up for sale today and will put that money towards a new CPU or GPU. As for MS? They're basically telling PC owners not to purchase their hardware. Not sure if that's a good thing lol. Doesn't matter. Haven't turned on my XB1 in about 2 months now.

That's a good question, never really thought about that. Technically 3rd parties could release games on the PC and PS4 and have the games sold on the MS store especially if the MS store becomes big. Would be interesting to see how that works out.

that's your personal preference and I can understand your point of view.. In either case, a Windows 10 device is still being utilized for gaming which is a win for Microsoft's strategy..

It doesn't matter what device you decide to buy as your secondary choice.. that's like saying it's bad for Microsoft that you decided to buy a PS4 in addition to your Xbox One lol.. It doesn't matter to them if you buy an Xbox One in addition to your Windows 10 PC or not.. they just care that you have a Windows 10 device and are buying games like Quantum Break, Gears, Forza, and more from the unified Windows Store.. That's the bottomline.. as long as they can show developers that the combined XB1/PC Windows Store is getting support from gamers like me and you alike, that's a win for Xbox One and Windows 10 PC..

and to address your statement about a larger pool of games, I can barely keep up with the backlog of games I currently have on just my Xbox One lol.. For me, being able to natively access those games from different places (my living room, my office, and my Surface tablet for smaller games like Oxenfree) complete with cross-buy/cross-save for continued play is VASTLY more important than trying to gain the few PS4 exclusives I may be interested in.. for me, buying an additional device to enhance my gaming as a whole is more important than buying an additional device solely for a handful of individual titles.. But again, that's my personal preference and I totally understand if you disagree..

anyway, whether its XB1/PC or PS4/PC, its still a win for Microsoft, the greater Xbox ecosystem, and gamers.. cheers

I think it's good in the long run. MS have proven themselves with the Surface Pro that they're capable of controlling a convergence of form factors, let's hope they're capable here.

But I cant help but feel that current XB1 owners feel burnt by the fact that the console they bought might be obsolete sooner than they expected.

First off it is happening on the PS4 as well, remember that Sony was the first to roll out "console exclusive" labels.

That said, I am not sure that it hurt X1 as much, Seems the overlap between PC and console gamers are fairly small all things considered. The more games the systems have is objectively better, exclusives or not.

We are however in a situation where dedicated gaming fans, see a decrease in the Xbox brand value, this has not lessened that impression.

yea, i'm definitely looking forward to see how this potentially unfolds.. I primarily game on console and I prefer to stick to Xbox Live these days so if a game like Battlefield 5 is only released via Origin on PC, i'd rather pick up the Xbox One version so I can play where my friends are, get XBL acheivements, update my gamefeed, and etc.. Same goes for PS4/PC games that only release on Steam, i'll probably pass on those as well.. now if it's an absolute must-have experience, sure i'm not gonna let a storefront and relatively meaningless acheivements stop me from downloading that game to my PC but for the most part I plan to stick to the WIndows Store.. that being said, it would be awesome to play PS4/PC exclusives with the full Xbox Live experience so the possibility of those games coming to the Windows Store is very intriguing..

exciting times are ahead.. I expect some bombshells at E3 and i'm pretty excited about building my first high-end gaming rig.. :)

When you get a free digital copies of games for PC when buying Xbox One games or vice versa, hell yeah it's a great thing. It's not an issue for cross-buy games or cross-over games between PS4, PS3 and Vita, so why would PC and Xbox One sharing games be an issue and be bad all of a sudden especially when Xbox One and PC games are in the same Microsoft Xbox ecosystem. Many users here have multiple gaming systems and they could play games where ever they want. PC gaming and console gaming doesn't give you the same experiences and same conveniences. So Microsoft uniting Xbox and PC to make their gaming experience stronger than ever is a great thing.

It is good, for both PC and Xbox One gamers. With a higher potential audience, Microsoft could be more willing to invest in more exclusive games from various IPs.

Microsoft got bashed a lot last generation for milking Halo, Gears, Forza, and Fable and not releasing other IPs often. But why did they do that? Because those were the only IPs that sold enough copies to merit the investment. With the Xbox One audience being smaller compared to the Xbox 360, the potential of getting enough sales is lower. But add Windows PC, and now your market increased by a significant amount.

Do you guys think Quantum Break would have sold enough on Xbox One alone to make Microsoft happy? Hell, would it have broken even? Perhaps not. Alan Wake on X360 didn't do well enough for Alan Wake 2 to get approved.

I think it is a recipe for making Microsoft more money plus increasing benefits for developers and consumers of both platforms. Everybody wins.

Game developers benefit because they will have a larger user base of gamers to sell to in two different markets under the shared Xbox/Windows 10 ecosystem which will make them more money. What do game developers have to lose from this? Absolutely nothing.

Gamers of both platforms lose absolutely nothing except maybe having to deal with fanboys saying "<insert Xbox/Win10 exclusive here> is not a real exclusive" in pointless fanboy arguments that don't mean anything in the real world. Whereas they will benefit greatly from things like:

  • Having a larger community of gamers to play online with and being able to play games with your friends even if one of you is playing on Xbox and the other on PC thanks to cross-play.
  • Being able to buy a game once and then be able to play it on Xbox and PC and Surface tablets thanks to cross-buy while also being able to seamlessly switch between the device you are playing the game on thanks to things like cross-save and a unified Xbox Live profile and friends list.
  • More games! Not only will PC gamers benefit from now being able to play traditionally Xbox games on PC, but gamers of both platforms are going to get more games since the larger user base of gamers to sell to under the shared Xbox/Windows 10 ecosystem will add more incentive for developers to release games for the Xbox/Windows 10 ecosystem. Plus, Microsoft will also be willing to invest in getting more games for the gamers in the Xbox/Windows 10 ecosystem to enjoy since the larger user base of gamers to sell to will be able to better assure that they will make their money back and therefore they will be more willing to invest in games that they otherwise might not have.

And Microsoft benefits because they are expanding their gaming business into another market that poses no risk to their existing Xbox market since most consoles gamers could not care less if the games are also on PC. People that prefer to play games on consoles are not going to suddenly get into PC gaming just because Xbox games are also on PC, so the Xbox platform will continue to sell to the many people that prefer the console experience over gaming on a PC. And console gamers are also not going to buy a PS4 over a Xbox just because Xbox games are also on PC because the Xbox is still the only console that these games are on which is all that matters to console gamers. In fact, I think it will lead to even more sales of Xbox consoles since the benefits that I listed for gamers in the previous paragraph will help to make the Xbox more appealing than the PS4 for someone looking to buy a console which I think will more than outweigh any console sales they lose from PC gamers no longer having to buy a Xbox to play traditionally Xbox games anymore.

Microsoft has nothing but benefits and absolutely nothing to lose from this. Saying that Microsoft is in any way hurt by games releasing for both Xbox and Windows 10 is as ridiculous as saying that Sony is hurt by games releasing on both the PS4 and the Vita.

For PC gamers, it's definitely a good thing.
