When Microsoft announced it was revamping the Xbox 360 dashboard, concern, not congratulations, was the first thing I thought of voicing to Microsoft.

The update promised better graphics, avatars, easier access to movie and TV downloads — in short, a more robust interface than the "blades" presentation that greeted gamers when they started up their consoles.

Something more robust implied a need for more processing power, more work for Xbox. And that meant more worries that my console would crash and display the "red ring of death" yet again. (The consoles tend to run hot and warp the circuit boards.)

I am on my fourth Xbox — this time, one of the black-box Elites sporting a large hard drive, HDTV compatibility and an alleged resistance to crashes. Twenty months have passed and … well, so far, so good.

Of the three that died, the longest surviving one lasted a grand total of nine months. After the third died, Microsoft decided on its own to replace it with an Elite, without question and without my request. Meanwhile, my first PlayStation 3 and first Wii are humming along. Both were among the first ones sold in the United States. Both have performed flawlessly.

Both sit in a warmer room.

Perhaps Microsoft thought it looked bad that a gaming reporter couldn't write about Xbox games any more after the third crash, and that he might have better luck with a console upgrade.

It's unnerving to think though that my latest luck could run out anyway, even though the console is dusted regularly and has an extra cooling fan attached, even though as an added precaution the Elite sits in the coolest room of my house — which during winter turns downright cold.

Now I'm tentative about turning on my Xbox. It might survive my next bold move toward the galaxy's fringe with "Star Trek," or my next diplomatic overture with "Civilization"; it might not. Microsoft supposedly made the Elite systems more heat-resistant, but they are not impervious to crashing.

Microsoft might worry about my Elite, too, given my track record. However, I believe the company has more pressing concerns:

* None of the Xbox titles announced for 2009 has "Halo"-like market appeal. Microsoft enjoyed substantial media attention and a subsequent increase in Xbox 360 sales when "Halo 3″ arrived in September 2007. So, what's next? A "Halo" prequel. By a show of hands, how many of you who aren't "Halo" fans have heard of it?

* Casual gaming has made a huge leap forward due to the graying of the gaming population. However, Xbox 360 is not a console for casual games; it was designed to become the hub of home entertainment — the place everyone would go to see movies, listen to music and surf the Internet, perhaps all at once, in addition to playing richly designed games in high definition and with surround sound.

But for reasons already explained, it's probably not be wise to try multiple tasks on Xbox.

* The swooning economy will get worse before it gets better. Just ask President-elect Obama. In the coming months, more jobs will disappear and disposable income will reduce to a trickle (if it hasn't already), thus making even a $199 Xbox 360 Arcade — still the lowest priced system around — sound unappealing after Christmas.

Microsoft needs console sales to remain strong through the first quarter of 2009. Otherwise, it will have to raise prices on Arcades to cover the cost of a recent hardware upgrade. Or raise game prices.

Or, maybe Microsoft will get in line to ask Washington for a bailout.

So, now I look at my Xbox 360 with concern that it won't last and that I cannot afford a replacement. And Microsoft probably won't be as generous next time.

And I probably won't care.

Source

Not saying I agree with the article but it is an interesting read and he makes some valid points.

That was really well written!
Well yeah, the 2009 lineup for the 360 doesn't look very promising. I'm sure that there will be a couple of exclusives released in Q3 and Q4 that will do well. But at the moment Sony looks like it's going to win 2009 with their lineup. Maybe that's because they've announced most of their games and MS haven't? Who knows- it's too hard to call.
But I don't think that it will effect people that are contemplating on buying an Xbox 360 because they still haven't played all of the other games like Halo, Fable, Gears etc.

Microsoft usually replaces regular 360s with Elites if you have to get it fixed more than two or three times. You're not special, don't worry.

No.

The Wii has suvrived this long with only a hand full of good games. I'm sure tons of games will pop up for the 360. And we still get mulit-plats.

I'm surprised that you talk about the 360 doom next year and you use no comparison with the PS3, not one at all. Impressive.

I'm sure Sony is also hurting as well, not just with the PS3, all there TVs and devices have not been selling well either

Yea sure there problems with crashes, but my first X-Box lasted me 3 years before it broke and it was a pro. now i got myself an elite.( with a HD 1080 42Inch Flat screen mounted to the wall with a full surround sound system BABY!!!!)

They both going to have to tuft it out in the coming months with people tightening up there wallets, but i will not say that all three consoles are doomed next year unless they get hit really hard by the economises.

They've just released a new XBox 360 architecture including more flash memory so Arcade users can get the most out of the New XBox Experience. It also features better components and reduced power consumption and a smaller GFX chip. This means the RRoD is going to be a thing of the past for new owners - oh and all new XBoxes have HDMI ports these days.

I don't think the 360 is dead I think it's just finding it's feet!

Halo 3 sold 8.5 million copies that's a hell of a lot of fans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best selling game on the PS3 is GTIV a multi format game that isn't even the best version - that being on the 360 if the PC reports are to be believed.

I see what you're saying. The 360 has crashed on me 2 times already. Now my warranty has expired as well.

I'll be buying a PS3 as soon as this 360 dies; who are we kidding it's inevitable. But I owe it countless hours of gaming satisfaction --> Gears of War1/2, Halo 3, GTA4, Burnout Paradise, Call of Duty 4...(I know some of them are available on the PS3 as well)

But its time for some untapped gaming satisfaction. PS3 --> MGS4 and KillZone 2 (soon to be released), and Resident Evil 5 ( which will also be available for 360 but mine will be dead).

I think mainly the 360 will be doomed in 2009 because it has no GOOD exclusive games that warrant any attraction towards undecided potential gamers. Unlike the PS3 which has KillZone 2 coming out soon, which looks exceptional.

Speaking of Doom, is there a Doom 4 in development? I don't think the 360 will have a superb year like this year. But I also don't think PS3 will have a excellent year either.

It's ironic for me. My PS2 no longer plays PS2 games, that part of the drive broke or something, no clue how it works. My Wii has extremely slow loading times and can't evenl oad some games due to issues on the drive, but my 360 is absolutely doing great. Rather ironic, now that I made this post I better check my 360, and make sure it hasn't RRODed for the sake of irony.

Since I don't feel like sitting here and dissecting each one of this guy's terrible points (directed at the source, not the TC), let me put it this way to save time...

People forcasted the Xbox 360's doom imminent doom in 2007, 2008, and now for 2009 and the Xbox 360 is still going strong. Forgive me if I think this prediction is going to fall flat just like all the rest.

There is absolutely no way that the line-up of the xbox for next year is dead. Unless you mean in the way of Rrod. My one has crashed on me like 5 or 6 times. Ive had the 3 rings, 4 rings and i think the 2 rings but its still working. However, the line up will always be great. Just becasue there arent games like Halo, its not going to make sales. People do buy other games lol.

I dont think it is doomed one way or another. I do think that it is losing the steam it build in 2007. For now, 360 is enjoying a price advantage with the Arcade system. There are substantial rumors PS3 will get a price cut in March timeframe, so that advantage may not last. As for games? Other than Star Ocean 4 (which most believe is just a timed exclusive in the end), a couple of more Halo versions are the only thing announced for 2009 on 360. Meanwhile, PS3 has Killzone 2, Infamous, White Knight Chronicles, a Ratchet and Clank sequel, God of War 3, and MAG. The difference in the libraries are PS3 keeps coming up with new hits and different angles while 360 keeps abusing its few staple franchises (Halo, Gears, maybe Forza and Fable). Still, in the end, 360 will not be doomed because the 3rd party developers have basically all gone multiplatform. Any great 3rd party game for PS3 will be on 360 and vise versa.

This is mad cow acting up. "MS hasn't announced their entire 2008 lineup by Dec 1st 2007, therefore there ARE NO GAMES coming out in 2008. MS is going to take a break in 2008". You guys have had egg on your face with this ever since the 360 launched. RROD... as bad as it was, the net effect is that the 360 sells like hot cakes. Thats the impact that its had on the typical consumer.
