L4D is an absolutely amazing experience when you play with friends. It has pretty much provided the best multiplayer FPS experience I've ever had... even topping the likes of BF2, CS and TF2. That being said the single player (something I think is required for a title worthy of GOTY) is definately lacking. The AI teamates are simply not aggressive enough to play with on expert, the game has virtually no storyline and the actual depth of content is slightly shallow(limited number of weapons and levels).
The number of levels is by no means an issue in multiplayer simply because you have the ability to play on expert there, thus increasing the play through for each level significantly.
Also, as someone already mentioned, about 70% of the online community are jerks who have no ability for teamwork. THere are some good internet players out there but most are simply no good.
Overally L4D is certainly a worth best multiplayer/best co-op of 2008... but GOTY?... I think not.
I don't get people these days. Does a game really need a storyline to be good? If you ask me games with to much storyline aren't very fun at all.JangoWuzHere
Exactly. A story is there to provide motivation through a level. Tetris doesn't have a story. Racing games don't have stories. But they do provide motivation in their own ways.
So does Left 4 Dead. There's plenty of excitement and drama and yes, motivation just to get from one safe house to another. Honestly... there's no need for a story. Merely a scenario. Why are there infected? Where'd it come from?
Who cares?
There are zombie-like infected everwhere. GO!
That's all the setup that's needed for this type of game. The rest lies in its game mechanics...which is does near-perfectly. There's a time and place for a story. Left 4 Dead is neither the time nor the place for it.

i completely agree, that's one of the reasons i voted it GOTY, theres no long winded storyline, it's all about the gameplay, basically you get to shoot and burn lots and lots of zombies and it's a hell of a lot of fun doing it (pipe bomb never gets old)L4D's online community was terrible and ruined the game for me.ZweihandOn 360? I'd say it's about 50/50 on the PC. Half the time it's either jerks or complete noobs and the other half it's all good. It's nice having a couple friends to play with, that way I don't have to worry about jerks or noobs. This is probably why I've enjoyed the game so immensely.
I don't see how if you have played it you could vote for any other game GOTY. Especially when one of those games is GTAIV, one of the most boring games of the year where all you did was drive to a place, shoot some guys, etc. If you died on one part of a mission, it was back to the start for you. I didn't even finish the game. I can see how MGS4 could compete with it as it was an awesome game, especially for long time MGS fans. Still, Left 4 Dead should be closer to winning GOTY than GTAIV, but I guess too many people just vote for what they played, even if the game itself wasn't very good.channtheman1
You got it wrong, man. It's just, not everyone thinks the way you do, and not everyone thinks Left 4 Dead deserves GOTY over others.
Seeing how few people played TF2, scandalous, i can't say i'm surprised.
Orange box was probably the best deal for years :|
KungfuKitten
TOB sold over 3 million across all platforms according to valve. that isnt bad. It could be better, but it isnt bad.

3 million is exellent sales !For most games yes. But the Orange Box is quite possibly the best retail value for video games EVER. It had 5 games of extremely high calibur. It should have sold more than 3 million copies across three platforms.
For those complaining about the community you have to play with people you know or use a mic and make friends with people you like playing with. I've only run into a few people who are really complete a$$es and they jsut their to annoy people on purpose or treat it like an ordinary one man rambo game.
Although there is a problem with rage quitters occasionaly in versus but again jsut play with friends.
The game really does derserve more acalades because it brings together fresh game mechanics with older ones in a great polished package. The content may be light but the replay value is their to sustain until the new content and mod community maps (Dead Before Dawn anyone?). The one thing people forget about playing this game is that you really MUST play with a mic otherwise ou miss so much of the experience.

Who cares? People have personal opinion. Just because a game is rated highly doesn't mean everyone has to like it. I think Half Life is boring, so why would I go buy The Orange Box? Just because it's a good deal? No.
Why don't you let Valve worry about the game sales and you just play them. If you care about the sales that much, call them up and let them know you are willing to advertise it for free.

lol, that is actually exactly what this thread is, and I was just saying that I am surprised that more people didnt want to play it.
ppl that are arrogant enough to complain about noobs ARE the jerks and ruin the experience for any game if they call any noobs out for their sloppy performance. what do ppl expect? the top selling true hd game console (xbox360) to be 100% noob free? anytime i'm in a co-op on R2 and everyone unanimously agrees we don't need a spec op's i just laugh it off and take all the xp i can before we get an inevitable mission failed.SmashingXi agree, there are always going to be new gamers appearing who havn't played online before, we where all 'noobs' in the beginning and we all remember what it's like to get wasted by everyone elsse cos we where new to the game, and left 4 dead is a teamwork game and a good team can take up the slack for an inexperienced player, we had a sying in the british army "you are only as fast as your slowest man", so people should cut the noobs some slack, maybe take them in hand and help them to become better and more experienced online gamers
L4D's online community was terrible and ruined the game for me.ZweihandI am sure it is on xboxlive, PC community = no problems at all. This game should be played on PC anyway, i tried it on the 360 for a few hours. Its really inferior in EVERY way, graphics are horrible, zombies dissapear the moment they die??? wtf?? Low framerate, hurt my eye. Most awesome thing about this game is the lightning with ur flashlight, xbox version doesnt have Dynamic lightning.... wtf... THe hunter rifles sux lol with the analogs lol. And its way easier. Bad port if u ask me.
L4D should not have been nominated for GOTY. I own it. The main problem is that there are way to little maps. Only 4 campaign levels (1 hour each). Sure you can play it over and over and each time will be a little different but thats not good enough. The vs. mode I found to be not very good. For starters there are way to little maps. I remember like only one or two (I hadn't played vs. mode in a while). And its really not all that great. I thought it would be like Brain Bread, Zombie Panic or Zombie Survival (in Garry's Mode) but it isn't. Only 4 Zombies and 4 humans (Not including NPC). They should had made it like 16 players. And you only control the boss Zombies. To me Left 4 Dead feels like a unfinished game. Way to little maps. And this is why I think it should have not been nominated for GOTYchansaetYou do control the boss zombies......? And they have stated , from what Ive heard , that there will be DLC coming down the road.

Boss zombies are kind of boring. The Bommer just spits the slim. They should had made it like Zombie Survival (garry's mod) More maps are coming I hear also but I'm still waiting (I bought the game the day it came out). I'm tired of playing the same maps over and over.

Eh... It's the best community I've found in all honesty. Valve games always have much better communities than say Halo or Call of Duty.
Play TF2. You'll find a good community where medics heal you, fellow engineers help build your sentry gun, and people are generally helpful... At least in my experience. The games alright...but feels more like a shooting gallery than you trying to escape a zombie infested city....plus the zombies spawn outta thin air lol.
would of been cooler if you had to search the levels for ammo and weapons.
the lighting sucks the other peoples flashlights dont cast any light on the level lol.

I enjoy TF2 as well but right now there are many experienced players on L4D and a lot of ppl who play to help their teammates out.It would have been nice if Valve had made the game more difficult on the settings that aren't expert, playing there feels a lot like they are trying to survive.
