Let's take a look at the math:
Xbox Live launched in 2005.
Total price of XBL over 5 years (before price increase)=$250
Price increases by $10 in 2010. This leads us to 2012 in which the total for those years is $120.
$120+$250=$370.
Now before you go on a ran about how XBL is "better" and has all these "features" I have provided a source for all the features on all the major online services. The only feature that XBL has that PSN doesn't is cross game chat, XBL has no features over Steam.
You can see all this for yourself here (note some features are only available in certain regions):
Xbox Live features
PSNFeatures
Steam Features
You can't argue with the facts. So in the end you paid $370, the price of a new console, just to play online and talk to people playing different games than you. Was that really worth it? You could have used that money for other games. And I'm not even taking into account the $100 WIFI adapter that so many poor suckers bought.
Everything here is fact, you can check it yourself. Was it worth it? Are you willing to pay the same, or possibly more next gen? What if they do another price increase again?
