It is scary how well Microsoft is doing in the console business.

Pretty much an unknown last generation. SureXbox 1came in second placebut was nothing compared to thegoliath that was PS2 in terms of sale figures. Now Xbox 360 is the leader in HD gaming and has a marketsharethat completely dwarfslast gen. Can you imagine how much better the next Xbox will be. It will probably be built like a tank and combine the features of the Wii and its HD graphics origins. Well done Microsoft.

the one year head start and $199 price tag helps.

My hats off to MS.... when they want something, they go after it.

The most important thing for them to do now is to make sure that failure rate is less than 5% next gen.

I'll be a later adopter next gen for MS, I'll let others test the waters for me....

Assuming Nintendo releases alongside MS, next gen, I'll buy Nintendo's machine day 1.... I have complete confidence in their hardware.... last time I had a problem with a Nintendo System was when I was blowing into a large square cartridge and pushing it to the right while pushing it down. YOU KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.

Heck my DS fell out of my pocket into a puddle.... I picked it up brushed it off and was playing it 5 min. later.

I think Microsoft deserves some props. A huge improvement from last gen imo.

If you told me I would have a MS console last gen I would of said "yeah right" and went back to playing PS2 and GCube. Now I have a 360, but no PS3. Funny how things change.

I'd say the PC is ahead of the 360 in HD gaming.

I hope their next system forces them out of the console business.

It'll never happen, but it would be great if it did.

Yes, thanks to the year head start..(which resulted in the RROD's) could you have imagined if they launched around the time the PS3 did? they would be 3rd place, IMO. Thats not to say they didn't do anything, they did. So good for them. MS knew they had to be out first to even think about over taking sony and playstation.

It was the same way for me. Personally, I was a huge Playstation fanboy especially with the PS2. I never considered owning an Xbox. Now I'm extremely biasedin favor ofMicrosoft. Besides the RROD fiasco, they haven't made any mistakes and pretty much given the hardcore gamer everything he wants.

microsoft is really not doing that good it had a one year head start and is only 7 mil ahead of the PS3 and forget wii, wii Pwned them, it's got no games coming this year, the PS3 is beating it in sales worldwide and it's the cheapest console on the market it's hanging in there. microsoft should be thankful that the PS3 made so many mistakes like making the system $600 because if not for that it would have ended up like the original xbox. to tell the truth considering it's advantages that it had it's a dissapointment. and please lemmings I know you love to pretend like it never happened but xbox had a year without any next gen competitors and it basically has not been able to capitalise it's doing awful.

I actually agree, for a year head start it should be much better, goes to show you how strong the sony/nintendo fanbase. PS3 is doing pretty good for when it came out.

I'm really not impressed with MS, the only props they should get is surviving there RROD fiasco without some sort of recall. Microsoft mantra must be "If at first we don't suceed....throw lots of money at it until it starts making money"

Scary? I'm not even impressed. With their kind of money they should have the cheapest, most reliable console with the best library.

It seems like last gen all Microsoft wanted to do was finally release a cheap alternative platform to the PC in order for people to play their games on, and it somewhat worked. Now it seems like it's personal between Sony and MS, and I'm pretty certain MS wants to knock Sony out of the industry.

I loved the original Xbox, love the 360, will most likely love the next iteration of the Xbox.

Same here Last generation I thought the Xbox was the biggest joke of all time, I played PS2, GC, and PC. I also loved my Gamecube, like a lot. Now Nintendo is the least favorite and the 360 is one of my favorite consoles. How times change.

It is funny how they were rushed into next gen and it actually payed off...Sony was not planning to release in 2005 and all the developers jumped to the 360. Then the hardware was cheaper and has since been cheaper. Only thing that has worked against them is the rushed hardware that is faulty as hell. Sony should have just delayed the PS3 until March 2007, launched it cheaper at $499 and $399 with a bigger library. They might have had a better chance at catching up quick.

Oh, and all that cash flow helps too haha.

... it made it's first actual profit in 2007... the same year Halo 3 came out. I think it's still lost MS a billion dollars or something  Geez... that they keep at it makes me really wonder about the corporate mindset and how the US economy got here. So sad.

You realize MS makes more than the Xbox right? They can afford to lose some money if it's going to help ensure customers will come back, and that they'll have a large fanbase.

Microsoft's biggest contribution to gaming--and the thing they should receive the most props for--is showing us what a console can do WITHOUT a game disc in the drive. They were the first to put ahard drive in every console, which enabledmusic ripping and playback on the original Xbox. And with the 360, they've blown it out to the point where most people I know turn off autoplay when inserting a disc;the NXE is the first destination when turning on the console, and only after you're done there do you finally launch the game.

Nintendo brought gaming into the mainstream with the NES andSNES. Sony made gaming cool with the PlayStation and PS2. Now Microsoft isgiving gaming its proper place within the entertainment landscape. That's Microsoft's legacy in this business.

"the entertainment landscape", I think PS3 has that one more with Blu-Ray and ability to install another OS. Both 360 and PS3 can go straight to the home screen. PS3 also offers upgradeable hard drives anywhere up to 500gb 2.5.

360 doesn't do much new, it's what Microsoft have done in the gaming community which deserves more cred, such as bringing out a console, after one that "failed" (still did well), and managing to beat out Sony in the beginning years with multiplats and exclusives.

It would be interesting to study how much marketshare microsoft would have gotten in the console industry if they used the same amount of money and their console was a matchbox.

I think they are doing well but they have be the douches of the gaming market. They completely stopped supporting the Xbox a year before the 360 came out so they could get a early lead. Then they release shoty hardware, and I think they wanted a new gen next year but with the economy they will be forced to wait and that will hurt them in the long run because the PS3 will be able to catch up and with Sony's first and second party stuff they will make the 360 look aged.

yes, it is scary how well their console is doing. i remember one of my teachers saying his not getting a xbox 1 because he didn't think that Microsoft should be releasing a video game console. he had a ps2 and a crappy laptop PC that he would play diablo 2 on.

That doesn't make any sense.. Nintendo have been making consoles since the early 80s. They've dominated before, so really how is it a surprise that they're dominating now?

Because their last console was the Gamecube, a flop. And the successor is on track to outsell the PS2. I don't think anyone expected that.

it is great to see a competitor in the market like ms but i fear they will try to knock sony out of the market if that happens i will hang up my controllers for the last time or just play my ps3 for life :).

Actually i will probably keep with nintendo if that happens. I like the xbox but i hate M$ with a passion they have very dirty business tatics. I know this whole world cares about money but when you are costing the consumers for your mistake that is wrong.

not mightily impressive, but impressive nonetheless. I still think they should have done better or should do better, considering the mistakes Sony made, they could have taken advantage of it. The cleverest thing they did, was to launch first, because if they launched side by side or after PS3, it will be different story today. Still, props to them for giving Sony a hard time, taking their exclusives made Sony focus on first party and I'm grateful to them for making Sony serious about online, because if there was no XBL, there wont be any PSN.

I'm very impressed with the work they are doing in Japan. The fact the 360 will hit one million sold over there is a huge win. More than anything im disappointed with Sony. $600 at launch and still $400 without backwards compatibliity 2 years later. Nobusiness sense at all.

What I find funny is they made one massive, massive mistake with the 360 and people still buy them, fully aware that they're likely to break within 18 months... While Zune has done almost everything right (good wireless, incredible sound quality, long battery life, zune social, download as many tracks as you want for £blah a month, reliable hardware) and nobody wants them.

My only fear with the success of MS, is Microsoft being MICROSOFT CORP. Anybody who knows anything about the history of MS will know what i mean. They like to destroy competition rather than effectively compete. Im afraid they are attempting to do the same with sony (not that sony is in danger of getting killed, i have to say that for the fanboys :P ) but history tells us that MS WILL do that. Judging by the quick taste of success in the gaming market, i think they are already planning to do some questionable things this gen, and into next gen to choke off effective competition, and that usually comes in the form of patents, whether they are internally produced, or bought.

It will probably be built like a tank and combine the features of the Wii and its HD graphics origins. Well done Microsoft.

They were on the pc before the console, so they knew what they were doing.

Their experience with PC gaming doesn't mean they knew what they were doing with consoles.

Judging by the quick taste of success in the gaming market, i think they are already planning to do some questionable things this gen, and into next gen to choke off effective competition, and that usually comes in the form of patents, whether they are internally produced, or bought.navyguy21
Every company does that. MS just does it a lot better. In business who really wants competition, well other than the consumer.
