Though better known for tracking TV rating, Nielsen has moved into games and with the move has hit the industry with a few interesting facts that are sure to have an impact in areas like advertising.

GamePlay Metrics takes data from over 12,000 households (about 33,000 people) to monitor gaming console and PC game use.

The company says GamePlay Metrics demonstrates, "Who is playing games, on which systems, at what times, and, when integrated with other Nielsen data, illustrates which other media platforms are also engaging gamers and which consumer goods they're likely to buy."

So, back to the Wii news. It seems that though it is the cheapest of the next-gen consoles, it is in fact more likely to be found in households where the annual income is over $100,000.

By reading this it almost sounds like people who make less money prefer another system than the Wii. And households that make more money prefer the Wii for other systems.

What do you make of it?

I dont know, maybe people with more disposable income dont mind over paying for a product that seems to be all the rage and they just gotta have it no matter what the price ?

I do that sometimes - almost bought a Wii but caught myself and knew I would regret it when the price comes down to 149.99 where it feels I'll almost get my moneys worth and maybe more games will be available that suit my taste.

Agreed. It not just the price. Otherwise, people would just stick to last gen.

It says that it's more likely to be found in those households. So, it could mean that those people who make 100K+can afford to buy a Wii in addition with their 360 or PS3.

if you know a lot of busy ppl that make a good living you'd probably see that they don't play much console games. they don't have the time to learn the controls. but with the wii they feel like they are doing something active and it's easy to learn. remeber that many of these ppl aren't the lazy type. they also like yoga and still like that. they're going to eat up wiifit.

this would still dispel the idea that it's cost alone that is making the wii a success. if there are more household making 100k+ with the wii than ones making less.

as for the 360 and ps3 in those households you're just speculating.

I think that people who make less want the biggest bang for their buck, so they buy the console with more features and people who make 100K+ can afford to spend $250 on another console.

Yeah, all this is speculation, but maybe also true for some people.

maybe for some but some how i doubt that they think 500-600 consoles are a hot idea also. they seem to buy the ds and ps2.

Alot of people with money are cheap (or with alot of money they see it could be better spent elsewhere), its why they have money. I can't even begin to acknowledge the amount of wealthy individuals i know who drink cheap beer. You can't tell me theydrink it because of the taste.Generalization don't get all worked up.

It not just the Price that sells the Wii... when I read this I immediately thought to myself "well it sure as hell isn't the games"
