I didn't think we would get hand tracking so soon it's incredible that it works now.

Also at 6:42 mark they talk about controlling VR with your mind using a wristband from a company called Ctrl labs this shit is insane lol.

I'm not so sure about that implementation for hand tracking. It looks like you need to be looking at your hands for it to work which is a bit limiting. even if just 2 cameras are enough it would still be a bit limiting.

Pretty cool idea though but itll need more cameras to work well i think.

Yeah it's really taking off, unfortunately it seems like interest might be dying down a bit.

I'm still waiting for gen 2.0, seems like we are at gen 1.5 at the moment. Almost bought the Valve Index but I didn't.

Me too, I think alot about what VR will be like in the future the fact that they can get hand tracking to work already gives me even more hope how awesome it could be. If we ever get to ready player one territory VR I think it will be impossible to go back to staring at a screen. It will feel primal at that point it will be interesting to see what next gen VR holds that's for sure.

Oculus Quest is turning out to be a game changer and its tether free. It can also be tethered starting November. All these features with the same hardware.

Can't wait to be trapped with 10,000 other players in a fantasy world, gets married, own a lake side house, getting a cheat 2 sword skill and beating the game master responsible for this mess.

There's been hand tracking for a while now with the LeapMotion add on and you can have it work with any headset (except PSVR unless you are using it on PC), even google cardboard. The problem with hand tracking right now is that the hands will only track when they are right in front of you.

Finger tracking is very nice from a technological point of view, but frankly this is not what vr needs today, what it needs is more games, I've been waiting like almost a year for borderlands 2 to finally come to pc because there are hardly any full fledged vr games, if you look past fitness and multiplayer games anyway, allthough the latter is not something as fleshed out like cod for instance.

Don't get me wrong, I still have great fun with skyrim vr and fallout 4 vr and borderlands 2 will be a nice breath of fresh air but this is still only the thrid port we are getting, this while there are hundreds of games that could be ported quite easily.

I did hear that oculus is going to push for more ports (assassins creed for instance), and I really hope they are right, and what even would be better is that new games come with standard vr support because frankly I can't be asked to still play first person games on a tv anymore.

It will be the core focus of gaming in 15-20 years, inevitably. Nothing can stop this because by that point it will be acting as the primary personal device for people in the same way smartphones are today. The games and technology will be so advanced that anything not in VR will look like an ATARI game does to us today.

That doesn't mean non-VR games are going to go away, they will just become a niche side activity that a lot of people will choose to play in VR on virtual screens.

Oculus announced a 10-12 hour AAA singleplayer Medal of Honor game with multiplayer as well. They have Stormland, an open world AAA game with lots of replayability and Asgard's Wrath, a 40+ hour AAA RPG, and we have a Wasteland VR game that leaked a while back, and of course we have Valve's new Half Life game and the other 2 AAA Valve VR games on the way.

People have no idea how much VR is advancing behind the scenes.

These are real prototype headsets:

The one on the right is much smaller, like ski goggles, and has a wider field of view than most current VR headsets and doesn't cause any eyestrains or headaches, and could be configured to replace glasses by dialing in your prescription.

VR sucks.. just like I said 5 years ago. I had a buddy buy me a PS version because he wanted me to play some shooter with him he said was tactical (forget the name) and it was absolutely terrible... The idea is cool and all but it is STILL many years from being an enjoyable experience for me. Crap games, crap technology, and sub par tracking and functionality, not to mention headaches, sweating, and lens fog.

Maybe it's just ps vr that sucks.. I mean it would be cool to play a game that interests me and doesn't blow... honestly it feels like all the games are on the same level as shovelware for the Wii. That's just me though. Maybe the new Medal of Honor game they are working on could change my mind... doubtful, but maybe. That said, it pisses me off they aren't just making a new MoH for consoles and chose that route instead.

So you played some mediocre title and think you're an expert now? What a joke. Why don't you actually play some good games instead of pretending that the entire library is somehow exactly the same as this one shooter you played.

If the games were so crap, they wouldn't be winning GOTY awards. Astro Bot was better received than almost all the 2018 games released.

that medal of honor is defintely interesting, Stormland may be something as well but like I said before, pancake games have lot more production value, it is made for a bigger market and they all translate pretty good to vr. I mean every first person/third person game from last gen and this gen could be ported, even some games from 2 gens ago would still be viable.

But devs just don't do it, thank god that playstation is pushing a bit for it, I heard oculus would do that to.

I have. Wasn't that impressed. It would take insane processing power and expensive screens to get resolutions that don't look overly pixelated a half inch from your eyeballs. Put your face right up to your monitor. Four inches from it. That's sort of what VR resolution looks like. Kind of shit. I think the one I tried was 1080p. I prefer a third person view in most games anyway.

Budget Cuts, and it’s demo continue to be my favorite experience. The room scale aspect of that game is a game changer. It’s beyond cool. Seated VR simply isn’t the same. I currently own a Vive, and owned a PSVR for a year or so. VR has a long way to go, but it’s promise is obvious.

3rd person works well with VR. Arguably it's the best way to experience 3rd person games that focus on story or immersion.

The resolution of VR is low, yes, but there are games that counteract this with the right shaders and art style. It won't bother you in Beat Saber or SuperHot for example.

Just because you heard it once before doesn't mean it's not going to happen. We also heard about how useful AI was going to be back in the 90s and neural networks are now commonplace and doing some black magic.

just look at that big ass thing strapped to your head!

this is a SIDE product that will live alongside regular gaming but will never replace it.

How the hell did you manage to miss the image I posted that shows a MUCH smaller headset design, one that doesn't even cause headaches or eye strain, one that would be easier on the eyes than any TV, phone, or monitor.

This will be a laughable comment to look back on as the 2020s progress. The potential of VR is far too profoundly big for it to be anything other than mainstream, and so it will happen.

Agree VR is going to be the next tech leap that is actually really exciting. Don't get me wrong I'm looking forward to next gen games but there is nothing like being immersed in VR. I'll never forgot how amazing it felt for the first time seeing that Oculus dreamdeck demo. As long as tech keeps advancing VR is just going to get better and better and I can't wait to see what next gen VR brings to the table.

No... I played many games on it including Astro Bot which was also crap in my opinion... and since they all suck (to me), something has to win... it's not like something isn't going to win.. lol. Even if you have nothing but rotten apples one has to win if they are competing against each other. The only game I played that was even half way decent was the VR portion of Ace Combat, but it didn't even have full functionality and you couldn't even play online... so what's the point? Either go all in or don't go in at all.

Like I've said many times, I feel that there are some good ideas, but they just don't have the technology yet to back it. I personally feel that with where we are RIGHT NOW that it just isn't ready. I mean it's cool some people like the gimmick, horrible detection, horrible frame rate, nauseating jitter and stutter, horrible collision issues, inconsistent play, and all that good stuff... I don't. Once they get some things ironed out and find a better technology in which to actually view the material without being heavy, hot, and clunky I'll give it another try. As it is right now though with 47 cables, inconsistent frame rates and usability. I just don't feel as though it's a good experience for any "on the fence"... sure it's great for the die hards that are blown away by the idea, but simply meh or not ready yet for those that aren't easily impressed or aren't all that interested by the idea.

Don't get me wrong, the tech behind it is impressive... I just don't feel with where we are RIGHT NOW that it is ready for mainstream. Once they can deliver VR without a ton of cables, being heavy and bulky, causing you to sweat and fog up the screen, and they actually give you a true 360 degree experience I'll wait it out. I did hear about some new VR that gives you no wires... can't remember what it was, but that sounds cool. I feel like VR is in the Model T stages and still has a long way to go to give a good experience.

However, I'm happy you like it and that it found a market for people just like you, that's great for you guys. for me however it's a joke, and it isn't even a funny one. I feel the games are incomplete, short on features, short in length, and very shallow (which is why I compared them to Wii games ((and not good ones either)). To each their own though. I mean obviously someone likes it... and it probably isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

I look forward to forward progress, but it has a LONG way to go before they ever see another penny from me.

Oh and by the way, I never claimed to be an expert... whatever the hell that is even supposed to mean.. lol. How can you be an expert of VR? It's not like it's a single game or anything. That would be like someone saying they are a master of PS4 or Xbox without details. You hook up the 56 cables, calibrate it, and put it on your head... lol. Masterfully at that. :P

I don't. Once they get some things ironed out and find a better technology in which to actually view the material without being heavy, hot, and clunky I'll give it another try. As it is right now though with 47 cables, inconsistent frame rates and usability. I just don't feel as though it's a good experience for any "on the fence"... sure it's great for the die hards that are blown away by the idea, but simply meh or not ready yet for those that aren't easily impressed or aren't all that interested by the idea.

Don't get me wrong, the tech behind it is impressive... I just don't feel with where we are RIGHT NOW that it is ready for mainstream. Once they can deliver VR without a ton of cables, being heavy and bulky, causing you to sweat and fog up the screen, and they actually give you a true 360 degree experience I'll wait it out. I did hear about some new VR that gives you no wires... can't remember what it was, but that sounds cool. I feel like VR is in the Model T stages and still has a long way to go to give a good experience.

However, I'm happy you like it and that it found a market for people just like you, that's great for you guys. for me however it's a joke, and it isn't even a funny one. I feel the games are incomplete, short on features, short in length, and very shallow (which is why I compared them to Wii games ((and not good ones either)). To each their own though. I mean obviously someone likes it... and it probably isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

I look forward to forward progress, but it has a LONG way to go before they ever see another penny from me.

Oh and by the way, I never claimed to be an expert... whatever the hell that is even supposed to mean.. lol. How can you be an expert of VR? It's not like it's a single game or anything. That would be like someone saying they are a master of PS4 or Xbox without details. You hook up the 56 cables, calibrate it, and put it on your head... lol. Masterfully at that. :P

So basically you are the 1% of the 1% as people in an extreme majority love it and love Astro Bot. It also sounds like you play with your camera backwards because you're not supposed to have framerate or tracking issues to the degree you describe, and when all is said and done you could be using PC VR to alleviate any of those issues, even going up to 144Hz with a Valve Index.

No... I played many games on it including Astro Bot which was also crap in my opinion... and since they all suck (to me), something has to win... it's not like something isn't going to win.. lol. Even if you have nothing but rotten apples one has to win if they are competing against each other. The only game I played that was even half way decent was the VR portion of Ace Combat, but it didn't even have full functionality and you couldn't even play online... so what's the point? Either go all in or don't go in at all.

Look man, to each their own. I just expect more out of a gaming experience. The "thrill" of VR isn't enough for me. I'm sure playing on something beside the PSVR that has more power and a lot more games to choose from is a better experience. Also, I'm sure that porn (which is likely the ultimate coming of VR) has a solidified future. That said, I have played and own the PSVR's most celebrated games and didn't enjoy myself in the least. Perhaps I am in the minority of the people that didn't like it, but if that's the case... my god people have low expectations. 95% of the games would score in the 1-5 range if they weren't VR. You can disagree all you want, and I respect your right to do so, but this isn't about me not giving it a fair chance, this is about it being an extremely sub par experience for me. Perhaps I set my expectations too high, but nothing even came close to my lowest expectations and that (in my book) is a problem. Honestly, the most impressive thing I experienced was on Firewall Zero Hour after I died and you can view your surroundings. That was kind of cool... so in that aspect, I can see where things like architecture or 3D modeling using VR likely has a future as well. Being able to give virtual tours of houses with a VR headset without actually having to drive to the open house would be pretty cool.

I seriously do think that VR has a future. However, I still stand by my original thoughts that as of now the games are nothing more than gimmicky poorly executed messes with the depth of a puddle.

Hopefully this new Medal of Honor game will be the start of higher quality titles... but I'm certainly not holding my breath.

VR has to many uses outside of gaming to not go anywhere.
