It's sad really, Multiplayer had so much potential this gen.

All we got was FPS games.

With the exeption of a few neat games inventive online games like Demons Souls, Littlebig Planet, Blazblue, Monster Hunter Tri & Mario Kart Wii. To state the obvious we have just been saturated with FPS games.

Why oh why have we not been given more epic games like Monster Hunter Tri. It is not only the best online game of the gen, it is the best online game ever.

Games like Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Uncharted 2, Gears 3 etc... Are just incredibly stale as if you can master one fps you can quickly pick up and play another.

Even with hardcore games like Counterstrike, you can easily enough pick it up and do ok, after about 20 hours of gameplay, just due to the fact that the FPS model is incredibly overused.

It saddens me that there was never a Pokemon MMORPG on the Wii or a Mass Effect / Dragon Age dedicated Multiplayer RPG.

Sigh. Hopefully the Wii U will redemy this :P

If Nintendo annouced a Pokemon RPG with online battles for the Wii U then it would be a day one buy for me.xxmatt125xx

Much of this gen has been squandered potential tbh.

I agree on the multiplayer though. I got burnt out on frag fests 4 years ago and cant understand how that type of experience is still increasing in popularity. Gaming has always been over-saturated with one thing or another, but this phase is just getting annoying.

Developers designed multiplayer for mass-consumption and as a means of making a 6-hour long game's replay value seem a lot larger.

Sure we had some innovative ideas for multiplayer as well this gen and it'd be wise not to forget them in the process. Best example? Demon's Souls and Dark Souls' online component. It was the kind of multiplayer experience seamlessly integrated with single-player that elevated the entire experience of the game to a whole new level.

Such innovative ideas are what I'd like to see being implemented more.

Co-op,deathmatch,horde modes,capture the flag etc were all cool features at some point of time....until they were over-used to massive extent this gen. My problem with multiplayer isn't that it is mostly applied to shooters(that is mostly true though) my issue with multiplayer is that how little effort and thought developers seem to put into it. Its almost like they copy-paste the basic structure of multiplayer modes, create new maps, add one or two new features to maintain the addiction factor and then release it over the sequels.

Its ideas like the ones Demon's/Dark Souls brings which I'd like to see more. For me, multiplayer shouldn't always be a disparate entity of the game but a component that enhances or adds to the entire experience the game offers.

I can't wait for Anarchy Reigns.
