I admit i played it on the gamegear when i was a kid and enjoyed it. But still, do you actually play this game or what? I lose intrest reall fast because it seems to me you just hold forward and watch him run. The rings are there but do you even need to collect them?

It lost its appeal after Sonic Adventure 2. Clunky controls and the focus on speed isn't fun anymore. I still play the 2d games though.

I never really enjoyed the 2d games much either but I put Adventure and Adventure 2 battle above the 3d Mario series in my opinion.

You should of played the sega megadrive Sonic games. Those are the best ones. An yes you need to collect rings as they act as health and collect 100 you get an extra life. If you collect the 7 chaos emeralds you get the ability to turn into Super Sonic which needs 50 rings to activate. So rings are far from useless.

It was a mix of platforming and fast paced gameplay. Definitely not just running forward as you make it out to be. There was actual platforming and alternate routes sometimes.

Sonic CD is the best 2D Sonic game. Excellent soundtrack and gameplay, this is were Sonic reached perfection.

Btw., there's also a PC version, dirt cheap, ya'll should play it before you die.

Well your first problem is that you played the ones on Game Gear. Only the fist one was ok, but the second one kind of sucked.

But to answer your question, yes I play Sonic all the time, and no you can't just run in a straight line. Maybe the new games give that sort of impression, but you'll die playing like that in the cIassics. I enjoy Sonic more than any other platformer series, because I feel they have the best controls, best levels, best music, best atmosphere, and they incorporate all that with speed. When I play other platformers, I always tend to get a little bored, as I always end up wishing I could just play as Sonic and annihilate the levels with him instead.

Yes, the old Mega Drive/Genesis Sonic games were great. The new ones, however... well, let me just say they don't really hold a candle to the old ones. I hope Generations will be better.

Do Sonic games have motion blur and slow motion? These would be good for a Sonic game.

I'm always bored when I try to play a 2D Sonic. I like Sonic Adventure because it's more tightly structured and has a good sense of speed.

Not really. Those effects just make the games too confusing imo.

Playing the demo of Generations reminds me why I never cared about them. My favorite one is Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, and the first adventure was pretty decent too, but other than that, I just dont really care about it.

I hate this crap. You people always use age to downplay someone's feelings on something. I was there for the "classics," and I agree with him.

Well, then, it's probably a matter of taste. Those classics were IMO a lot better than any Mario game back then, but obviously the same cannot be said for the 3D Sonics.

I enjoyed Mario more then sonic. DK as well though not by much. I love sonic games but I don't feel any of them were as polished or long lasting as something like Yoshi's Island.

When I wrote boring other platformers in my earlier post, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, and Donkey Kong are exactly the platformers I was referring to. :P

I don't know, but it takes some effort for me to sit through a long session of one of those games (I haven't even finished DKCR yet), but I can play Sonic anytime, anywhere. They're just perfect in every way. 8)

Never get bored of Yoshi's Island. I love that game, so much to explore, such awesome level design, you can see the care and precision put into every platform, every power, every secret. I feel like that's just missing in the main sonic games. They really do reward memorization over skill on a first few play throughs which is something I personally find to be a flaw.

The old Sonics were just plain amazing and still highly playable today. The game mixed speed by going through loops with good platforming. In his Prime Sonic was a match for both Mario,Link and Samus. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is outstanding one of the finest games ever to hit a system. You had to be there to witness the awesomeness of Sonic.

LOLWUT.

PS era ended around 1999/2000

Sonic 1 came out 1989/1990.

you're 10 years late. it's like playing the first MGS on PS1 (1998) on 2008 (the year MGS4 came out).

I think that's what I don't like about those games, and really like about Sonic. I don't want to explore everywhere or get different powers, but instead just want to race through the stage fast and skillfully. I like how they have multiple paths in Sonic, but they also aren't overbearing. You either go up or down, and they provide a few differences, but I'm not really going out of my way to experience each one; it just sort of happens. Same thing with the powerups too. You grab one of the shields, and it slightly alters the gameplay, but "they're quick and to the point," if that makes sense.

Well I've been playing Sonic for such a long time, so I don't notice any memorization stuff, but I think this just has to do with not experiencing one platformer as much as the other while growing up. Like for example, I have been playing SMW recently, and I will say memorization is definitely an important part of it. Since I don't know where platforms are, I kind of have to take it slow the first few times. I don't know how much time you've spent with Sonic, but my understanding is that memorization is a key role in all platformers.

No offence but, LOL to the 'Boost to win' part...I played ALL acts of Adabat earlier in Sonic Unleashed, trying to S-Rank them, and believe me, holding the boost button at all times will get you nowhere fast and WILL kill you fast. Yes, there are times when the level is just cheap, but for the most part, you need skill.

Some 3D sections NEED you to boost to continue the level, or you're as good as dead (like the water areas in Adabat or the Interceptor chases)

Sonic games are more than just boosting. If you want to S-Rank levels, you need Godly reflexes and quick reaction time on what you have to do next along the way...and just boosting haphazardly WILL NOT help you in any way. Boost to Win? More like Boost to Die.

I'm guessing you haven't actually played modern console Sonic games with boost, like Sonic Unleashed or Colours. It's far from 'boost to win'.

your doing it wrong right there :P

The definitive sonics are the ones on megadrive 1,2,3,S&K and possibly Sonic CD's a notable mention.Rings also act as a health bar of sorts unlike other platformers they are your second chance and the fact you collect 100 and you get another life means they are pretty much needed in some later points of Sonic games.

Also theres some levels like sandopolis, hiltop, casino night, carnival and god forbid the wing fortress in sonic 2, that require a fair bit of skill to get through :P

Yes, you need rings to live, one hit without a single one and you're dead.

Don't all games have you going to the right for the majority of the game?

Going really fast is suppose to be intense since you'll have to be on the lookout of what's ahead of you, plus I'm sure gamers loved "fast paced" gameplay.

Sonic 1 on the Sega Master System2 was my favourite when I was a kid, it's not just pressing forward - yeah you can get to the end of the stage like that but chaos emeralds and other hidden objects will be missed! I also really enjoed Sonic RUSH on the DS that was a solid game and of course Sonic Adventure 2:BATTLE on Nintendo Gamecube, others I have played but they just didn't seem as nice to play.

Well that's not fair, Yoshi's Island is in the top 3 greatest platformers ever made. The visuals are absolutely beautiful, the gameplay is as fluid as it can ever be, everything is perfect, there are 0 cons with that game. As a whole, most SNES 2D games, including RPGs are ageless. I can play them forever.

Its my favourite generation and Yoshi's Island is my favourite game :)

I miss that era. There's something about simple controls and visuals mixed with 2D gameplay that I always find so easy to understand and play and become absorbed in.

My absolute favorite are mostly PC games, but it's a wonder to me how fluid these SNES/Genesis games play, how solid the gameplay is and how beautiful the 2D visuals look. Donkey Kong Country 1-3, Super Mario World 1-2, Super Metroid, Castlevania 4, Megaman X, most of them are incredible games that i have found my self playing far more than any other. The entertainment value is unquestionable. Due to this, it is undenialable to me that these games simply do not age.

Sonic 1, 2, and 3 + Sonic & Knuckles were amazing.

Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 were also pretty awesome.

They were just fun back then, and still fun now.
