Six months, and that is not even a joke. That was a crisis response game made to counter the flagging sales of the 3DS in the west, made by a team of hastily assembled new recruits, using assets from the Wii version.I wonder how long NSMB 2 took to develop.

That makes sense. I haven't played it, but the general reaction to the game is that comes off as a rehash. I would have liked to seen what they could have done with a 2 year dev cycle.
You can enjoy a great new game. I would still enjoy it even if I didn't k ow it took 3 years to make[QUOTE="PlazmaClone"]Ok.... How does this benefit me?yellonet
Possibly. But just a year and a half ago it was called "Super Mario Bros. Mii" and looked like it was a completely throw together tech demo.
We don't know the total employee count, and how many months each individual worked on the game, to get a sense of the magnitude of the project.
They could have had 20 people working on it the 1st year for all we know.
Wait another Mario? Oh.. I never saw that coming! :roll:JohnF111
Yeah, f*ck this Mario bullsh*t, I'm sick of it. I'm sick of playing good games and I'm sure Nintendo is sick of making money. While were at it just cancel all upcoming games that are from critically acclaimed, high selling series. Nobody wants that sh*t!
I honestly don't see where all the effort went, everything I saw in the trailer looked like something I've already seen in past mario games. I'll save judgement until I play it though, the general reaction's been great so the long development cycle clearly paid off.

The game is samey, but just really well done.
In the same way UC2 is a generic cover based TPS, but a well made one.
[QUOTE="charizard1605"]It does look like they finally put some effort in the game.ZevianderThey put a lot of effort into NSMBW as well. I absolutely love New Super Mario Bros. Wii (it's actually my favorite Wii Mario), but no, no they did not. It was a lazy project, one meant to capitalize on market trends, trends that at that time only Nintendo recognized, but it was a lazy project nonetheless.
I highly doubt it was that long.
Maybe 1 and a half years tops. I think it started out as that New Super Mario Bros. Mii demo at E3 2011
[QUOTE="Meinhard1"]How long DK took?I doubt that this was all full force development, though.
I mean that's longer than Donkey Kong Country Returns...

After Prime 3, Retro was doing various things until about April when they had some staff leave. A bit after that, I believe, they started DK. So April-May-June 2008ish to October 2010.

I'm not the only one! \o/
Should have just made another 3D Mario game instead of wasting 3 years of their lifes on a cheap cash in to get a WiiU.
...wow...talk about lazy the game isn't revolutionary or evolutionary its just teh same new super mario brothers with a few additions..
It does seem like they put a lot of effort into the game, but the music is just as lazy as in the previous NSMB games. To me, music is a huge part of Mario so it's kind of a deal breaker. I've been hearing the Super Mario Bros overworld theme for 25 years and I still enjoy it, but I'm just sick of the NSMB music.
Super Meat Boy is a better hard core experience and that took about a year to make. (With only two people working on it.)
It does look like they finally put some effort in the game.charizard1605
Well, GT5 took ages to make and it's the worst GT in the series.

... Okay?2D Mario for the new generation?
Yes.
Best NSMB?
Likely.
As good as SMB.3, SMW and SMW2 were in their times?
Highly doubtful.
That said, the game does look surprisingly appealing considering it's a continuation of the slightly "rehashy" NSMB series.
I just don't think it needs a touch-screen...

I'm not surprised. Eventhough it's the same dev who also made NSMBU you can see that its made by entirely different teams.
