At an investor relations meeting during E3 Iwata was asked how Nintendo's online strategy will differentiate, catch up to, surpass and compete with Microsoft, Sony, iOS and Android.

Iwata answered by saying that current online gaming networks can't be replicated on the Wii U, and admitted the competition is too far ahead for Nintendo to catch up.

"I think that what we see in terms of online gaming networks on existing dedicated gaming platforms is not particularly well suited to the approach Nintendo has taken," he said.

"Therefore, I can't sit here and say to you that we can very quickly overcome or catch up to other companies, which began to work in the online field from many years ago and have been building these online networks on other platforms, and I don't think that would be a smart strategy, either."

Look how long it took Sony to get on par with XBL, and even now it's not on par, Nintendo will take even longer.

On par with XBL... wait, what? To me, PSN is the same thing as XBL except you have to pay for XBL and there is Cross game chat. Steam is where its at, bro.

makes sense. at the end of the day nintendo is a company with only a very very small level of experience with this stuff. they are strong at local MP but online MP and online services are completly different animals. they have just about accepted patching...the double edged sword. like them or not though games with an online component need patches. so they do need to be realistic about what they can achieve. its bloody hard to get right from day one. even EA, who do have a lot of experience in the area, are still trying to get origin up to speed and it took valve 3-4 years to get something working well (HL2 was the start of steams rise, excuse the pun, but it was still in pretty bad shape when the game released). hell even MS still get it wrong from time to time.

Context, makes a world of difference.

"Nintendo?s strength in this area is that we have so many consumers all around the world who are familiar with our franchises and our software. And parents and grandparents view our products as good products to buy for their children and grandchildren without any concerns. We also think that it?s important that in such an environment, skilled game players and beginners are able to play together, and in a way that both parties come out with smiles on their faces.

On the other hand, though, I think that what we see in terms of online gaming networks on existing dedicated gaming platforms is not particularly well suited to the approach Nintendo has taken. Therefore, I can?t sit here and say to you that we can very quickly overcome or catch up to other companies, which began to work in the online field from many years ago and have been building these online networks on other platforms, and I don?t think that would be a smart strategy, either. We have been discussing what to do next under these circumstances and ?Miiverse,? which I told you about in the pre-E3 Nintendo Direct presentation, is one of the new directions that Nintendo will be taking. We think that one fun area of possibility, as we have discussed, is for people not just to enjoy the games but also communicate with others about topics relating to the games. Even if they are in distant locations and not playing together in the same place or at the same time, they have an opportunity to ?empathize? with one another. And we believe that the Mii characters that were born on the Wii console will become an important asset in achieving this.

We also believe that the ?Miiverse? will serve the purpose of giving people an opportunity to discover other games that they haven?t yet started playing. In the ?Miiverse? screen that appeared in Nintendo Direct, there were many Mii characters gathering around game icons, which I referred to as ?Wara-wara,? and these icons will not be limited to only games that an individual consumer owns. We want to use this screen to show users who are satisfied by playing certain games that there is a high likelihood that they will also be interested in some other games that users are playing. In other words, please think that we have built an integrated recommendation engine into the Wii U system?s main menu screen. For the more casual users who do not play games frequently, they are less likely to go out and seek information about new games on their own accord. Therefore, we felt we needed a new way to try to reach out to them directly by helping them see what a suitable offering for them might be. Having said that, we would like the ?Miiverse? to help users to enjoy games more, be a place for games that don?t have online play functions to still have an online network connection and become a tool for us to increase the tie ratio (the proportion of software sales units per hardware) for the hardware system.."

That's the whole quote. Link

As long as the online is free (not confirmed) and all games are available as DD (which is confirmed) then as far as I'm concerned, Nintendo already surpassed XBL and PSN.

well, they better catch up with the online, after all with the Wii U they want to capture part of that 3rd party multiplatform market, unless they get their online features up to speed then that's not happening

hopefully with the Wii U they start managing their digital rights better, Wii digital content is tied down to the console and not to the user and there's no way to transfer rights, I think this is an important feature as far as digital rights goes so if Nintendo wants a stronger digital market I think they need to make some changes into how they manage their digital rights so consumers are more secure in being able to retain what they buy

PSN is rather inefficient compared to XBL because the OS/UI is superior on the 360. It's similar, but not up to par.

If you own a PS Vita it has since it offers Cross Game Chat & Party System which are the only two meaningful features XBL has over PSN on PS3 (PS4 will have these features since Sony said ram was the issue with the PS3 not getting them).

Well... worse is if they don't have anything at all. So a start is always a step ahead. They might not be able to catch up to them because xbl and PSN are constantly improving but that doesn't mean Nintendo can't have a piece of the pie.. even if it's small it will grow if done right.

Yeah, maybe thats the main bullet point it has over PSN. But as a whole unified experience XBL is far superior and that can't be argued. I use both consoles extensively and have studied enough in UI design and user experience to know that PSN is a fragmented mess.

since the latest update i find the 360 UI an absolute mess, i'll take the XMB over it anyday now. didn't used to be that way though.

Ok most people miss the point. PSN might have most of the same features as XBL but where it differs is how it's implemented, integrated in the system and how it runs. XBL is far superior in all those catagories and that's why XBL is better. You wouldn't say a toyota is just as good as Lexus, Mercedes or BMW because it can drive on the same roads or get you from point A to B.

This was taken out of context by TC, the real interview said something very different. Wii U is going to be great, I'm going with it next gen along with PS4.

Then you're not being truthful. PSN is clunky, slow and not very intuative. It's not even close to being as integrated as XBL or as smooth. The only thing PSN has is the price and you get what you pay for.

Its nothing to do with preferring the interface. You may prefer the aesthetic aspect of the PS3 interface, but thats completely different. UI design, and User experience can be measured. Its much better on the 360. The difference between the two being that Microsoft thought out the whole UI and were effective in futureproofing it before the launch of the 360, whereas Sony has just been bolting on bits here and there to the XMB since 2006 making it feel disjointed. Sorry, but thats a fact.

PSN and XBL are basically the same thing, only difference is that XBL is a little better integrated and a little more social with cross game chat and more players have mics (though the XBL community is also far more juvenile and annoying in general).

Is that worth paying for? Lol not a chance in hell. Here you can see the difference yourself:

Xbox Live features?

PSNFeatures

(Note that some services are only available in certain regions)

As that proves, PSN does every feature XBL does excpet for cross-game party chat, and it does it for free.

And I think anyone with a brain would agree that free >>> cross-game party chat

In fact based off of that list the only features Gold members are getting over Silver members is online gaming, cross game party chat, and access to Twitter and facebook and to pay for Netflix again. Well you can do online gaming, twitter and facebook, and access to Netflix (no additional fee) all for free on PSN.

So in reality the only service your actually paying for with XBL is cross-game party chat, and even that is p2p and prone to dropping people out. That's got to be hard to justify, especially when there are dashboard ads on top of it.

You wouldn't pay for XBL but you pay for PNS+? Yeah dude you make a lot of sense \sarcasm

Why not? PS Plus is an option and isn't forced, XBL is the opposite.

PS Plus saves you money, XBL just takes your money.

And Plus is cheaper than XBL. Two different things pal, two different things.

It really is. You can't experience your full game or play with your friends unless you have it. Having a silver account just leaves you left out, you don't get to experince your full game. Halo and Gears are worthless without their online modes, they are rentals at best.

XBL is basically mandatory if you want to get the full content of yoru games. Otherwise your only getting half, or in the case of games like COD or Halo, only a quarter.

But nothing of what you've just written makes XBL mandatory.

Really XBL isn't an option? Damn I wish they told me cause all this time I thought I had the option to pay or not. Guess having the 360 since launch and never really paying for it was my bad. I should have been forced to pay. Either way you try to rationalize it you're still paying for a service that is basically the same as live only slower, clunky and less integrated. Can you say hypocrit!

Silver is a damn joke and you know it. Cancel your Gold subscription and watch what happens, most of yoru games become worthless. Gold is basically mandatory dude, it may not technically be, but it would be like buying a car without tires. Sure it's not mandatory to buy one without tires, but if you want to drive it you need them.

XBL is the same way, without Gold your Xbox is basically worthless.

Really? Stunning

/sarcasm

Nintendo should have focused on online years ago, but for some reason, they seemed to act like it was a fad that would die out. Now they're forever playing catchup. They really shot themselves in the foot on this one.

I pay to "rent" games and get massive discounts, PS Plus saves you money, it pays it'self off within a month. Hell this month alone there is over $260 worth of content. Some of it is "free" the others are just disocounts (which btw you keep even if your sub runs out). It kicks XBL ass, only a delusional lemming who is trying to justify getting ripped off would disagree.

Everything else about the two services is the same, only difference is cross game chat and faster updates. Otherwise they are the same. PSN isn't slow and clunky, it is slightly less integrated however. Look dude, there is no way to justify the XBL fee, your getting ripped off. Listen to logic and reason instead of your emotions for a change.

Is buying a car without tires mandatory? No.

Is driving a car with tires mandatory? Yes.

Stop dodging around this and arguing semantics. You know my point and you know it's right.
