Leave that guy alone, he obviously keeps at it because of all the attention he gets, just like trolls.tegovoltio
I think that this time, he's finally gone too far. Hopefully the attention he gets this time around will put his idiocy to an end.
This topic is locked from further discussion.
I really find him despicable for taking advantage of this tragedy to further his own agenda. This definitely not the time to be talking about this especially with the lack of information since we do not know exactly what happened or even the identity of the shooter. We should be sending prayers to the families who have lost loved ones and wishing them well. It's just sickening watching a man do this during a time of mourning.Zhengi
very much so. This happens all the time sadly. People take advantages of trageties like this. This guy is lower then dirt.
Wow, I knew he was going to blame it on video games, but I didn't expect him to until at least tomorrow. Damn he's fast!
Still, he seriously is an ass to be making up these excuses just to strengthen his "case" against video games. Ah well, I hear he might get his law practicing license taken away. Let's keep our fingers crossed!
I have yet to see a game that is truly a "Murder Simulator" I'm willing to bet no one could find a game either. As for these people having played violent videogames. That's not unusual, most people under the age of 25 have played violent games.Tylendal
Manhunt came pretty close IMO.
[QUOTE="GrlGmr"][QUOTE="majadamus"]This was a tragic event, but the shooter should've killed his girlfriend and the other guy and then himself. Bullying may not be the case here, but this should teach people a lesson...do not disrespect anyone you never know who you are dealing with. I want to see a video of Jack Thomson on Fox News. RahnAetas
Uhh, he shouldn't have killed anybody. If you want to off yourself that's one thing, but since when did it become OK to take other people with you?
Ironically, if he had just killed himself, he would have just been another tally mark on the statistic that is suicides commited per year. When a school massacre like this happens, people are forced to take a damn good look at how society failed this indivdual. Honestly, very few people care that someone kills themself, it's too common, and no one cares to try and fix that problem. This event on the other hand, has all sorts of people trying to sort and figure things out.
Not saying that people dying is a good thing, but with today's society, it seems to be the only way change can be involked because people, just, don't, care.
Thats actually true no one really does care. I remember some kid in my school hung himself in his exgirlfriends yard because she broke up with him. Just killing him self would be passed off quickly but doing that causes some serius emotional damage to people and can lead to some other things.
As for Jack Thompson for you ill just say ignorance is bliss. You believe that video games cause people to get violent. I beleive that people are naturally violent and everyone has there breaking point. Hell I think of killing a bunch of people each day. Is that a result of video games no its just my screwed up mind and my hatred towards alot of the human race yes I said it I dislike most of ya. Only difference between me and the people who actually go through with it is that if I think about it too much my heart steps in and pretty much puts so much regret and sadness there I could never do it so conclusion. Just because games, movies, music are violent its the person who actually goes through with it.
I think I might have just pissed a bunch of people off with this. :D Dont be scared of me im actually one of the kindest people you could ever meet.

I'm not joking. I'm saying that people who carelessly wish for his death over his fight against violent videogames. Are talking of his death because of videogames. Thus proving him right!
He isnt the lowest of low either. Yeah he doesnt like violent videogames and maybe he has a wrong perception of videogames but then again he has every free right to speak what he thinks than anybody else. [QUOTE="taker42"][QUOTE="RahnAetas"][QUOTE="taker42"][QUOTE="RahnAetas"]Indeed. Instead of looking at solutions, let's just look for scapegoats. The reason why the guy still has his job because a lot of people agree with him.

Scapegoats are easier to understand, not to mention easier to get people to get up in arms in. I think the average person's brain would implode if they try to understand the dehumanization required to turn a person into a gun-toting maniac.
I just read that the shooter apparently went on the rampage after he argued with his girlfriend for apparently seeing another guy. I'm guessing he just flipped, the argument is probably the straw that broke the camel's back. I would say analysing the reasons why he turned into a maniac is easy (eg. peer pressure, pressure from school/work, girlfriend cheating), but why he would decide that shooting everybody in sight and himself in the end would make things better is the mystery. It's no mystery really, just a hard concept to grasp. People commit suicide due to lack of posistive emotional support. People go on revenge killings because they've been picked on and dehumanized for the better part of their life. Granted, most of these people only kill one or two people before taking themselves out. You know, your "typical" suicide/murder cases. The people who go on rampages are the ones who truely are insane for extended periods of time. All they are doing is venting out years and years of anger and hate. Instead of venting out this frustration on the shoulder of a close friend they do not have, they do it in a hail of bullets.
This type of madness can be prevented if they are just allowed to vent all the pent up negative emotion they keep bottled up, but in the end, this type of end, they had no one, and they only had violence as a valve.
you know i have read a research regarding anger and hate and video games. when you have so much anger and hate, you can express it in the video games and release it (gunning in GTA) instead of doing it in real life.
Yeah, I was getting a haircut yesterday and they had CNN on and Jack Thompson was using the Virginia Tech shootings as a platform to preach his videogames = violence viewpoint. He kept going on and on about Grand Theft Auto. I was getting so pissed off listening to this guy. There have been, what, 2 instances like the one yesterday in the last 8 years? In that time, what, over 10 million copies of Grand Theft Auto, GTA:Vice City, GTA:San Andreas have been sold? So, 3 people (since there were 2 kids at Columbine) out of 10,000,000 have gone off an done something radical? My God, just stop, Jack. And, this is assuming that the guy who did the stuff yesterday even has played a videogame in his life.

If Thompson was just ignorant, that wouldn't be the problem. However, if you look up some info on him, he's not just ignorant, he's a jerk. Ignorance is one thing, but cruelty is another. He tried to sue the makers of Penny Arcade for contributing to charity because he wouldn't, even after he promised he would. The man is evil.
There was a school shooting here in Canada recently  guess that brings the count up to a whopping four . If Jack Thompson were on GameSpot, he would get reported to the mods.
Speaking of which, if he's such a video game psychologist or whatever he claims to be, shouldn't he be learning about video games instead of making ridiculous claims with his minimal knowledge?
Bah, whatever, everyone hates him anyway.
I'm pretty sure that the Al-Qaeda were influenced by video games to be terrorists. :roll:magiciandude
too many tom clancy games.... oh and way too much CS damn you valve and your stupid half life engine
Thompson is a loose cannon with an agenda anyone who listens to him has problems.johngmillsLike I said before, he's not just ignorant, he's cruel. He is more violent (verbally, not physically) than the imaginary hordes of bloodthirsty gamers he's always talking about. Jack is just another fanboy.

Tylendal
Exactly. I'm sure there are spotted cases here and there where someone (who plays videogames regularly) did something against someone, but given the millions of games sold each year and the number of cases, I don't see why this is even an issue.
If you think about it - videogames give kids/people something to do with their friends, by themselves, for several hours a day, at night, etc. If these people weren't playing videogames, they would probably be looking to "fill the void" by doing other things. Some of these things could lead to vandalism, violence against others, etc. So, if you ask me, videogames actually reduce the number of violent crimes committed by kids/people since they AREN'T on the streets.

So many people play videogames, that of course these people are going to have played video-games. Just because there's a connection doesn't mean it's relevent. Studies have actually shown that video-games decrease violent tendencies, and hone reflexes.

Dear God, I can't believe he said Doom was the inspiration of another murder, you don't even kill people in that game. Thompson takes everything too far. When I first heard about him, I thought he was a joke, but I think he's completely insane to suggest such things, especially about this tragedy (R.I.P. victims). Shame on you, Thompson.

Its sad that Thompson uses the actions from yesterday to promote his own agenda. Knowing nothing of the shooter or the events that lead up to the actions, he immediately assumed that it had something to do with videogames and went off on that tangent. It was sad.

Okay so the guy is corrupt. That isnt the point, the point is, that people are going over the line in saying that he should be shot. Thats the most absurd thing I've heard. That their precious entertainment is more important than this mans life, and because he's attempting to stop the making of these videogames that he should die. No, that isnt right.
