Even with the sales spike for the PS3 it still is not enough to offset how much more the 360 is outselling the PS3 in America so the PS3 is still falling further behind.

Big numbers for PS3 with the new SKU, Dynasty Warriors, and Ratchet all coming out last week. I doubt it can be sustained though.

335,000 copies in 2 weeks in a country with less than half the population of the United States is fantastic sales. On a per capita basis, that is equivalent to selling over 800,000 in the U.S. in just two weeks. Who cares if it's less than some other Mario games? It's still huge sales that will generate a huge profit.

Are you trying to justify the 360's massive floppage in Japan?

The PS2 is Japanese but the Americans sure did jump on it...

SEGA was founded by an American in Hawaii, then moved to Japan. Atari was founded by a man named Nolan Bushnell. Does that sound Japanese to you?

Both SEGA and Atari have sold a hell of a lot of systems in Japan. Enough of this excuse already.

Must be a joke post.

Japan: half a million 360s, 1.3 million PS3s, 3.75 million Wiis(that's almost as many GCs sold ALL last generation there), 7 million PSPs, and 20 million DSes.

How is the PS3 doing great?

I could be mistaken, but the 360 outsells the PS3 in NA by what? Roughly 150,000 a month give or take? Those japanese numbers are weekly. So IF (note the if) the PS3 can hold this sales rate for 3 weeks or more...then yes, it is enough to offset the 360 in NA. And that doesn't even take into account the potential sale increase in NA for the $399 PS3.

Make that 400.000+ for september, and it will be by even more during october with big releases on the x360 and early $399 PS3 announcement. Let's wait and see the long term effects in Japan of this price cut, history tells us it's a temporary spike.

I agree that we should wait and see the long term effects of the price cut WORLD WIDE...not just Japan. Then again, wouldn't it also be fair to wait and see if the 500,000 sales for the 360 are also a trend or the exception to the rule? If you want to go simply by what "history tells us"...then my post holds and yours doesn't. Because "history tells us" that except for the rare occurance, neither the XBox nor the 360 sell more than roughly 200,000 a month in NA. After all, that is what the Xbox averaged over its life, and roughly what the 360 sells every single month (with a couple exceptions) since IT launched two years ago.

The PS2 is Japanese but the Americans sure did jump on it...

Which fails to realize the point he's trying to make: Japanese are different from Americans. One can argue the japanese are more set in their way while Americans are more likely to follow anything that's the latest trend or that's big and flashy.

And I knew another stupid thread like this would pop up. It's disappointing. No one ever said the 360 was going to kill the PS3. All that was mentioned was that people were surprised to hear that the 360 briefly held a lead in whatever area it did in Japan, a country that has historically rejected most foreign products of that nature.

The XBOX 360 = Shooters

Japan doesn't like Shooters.

How many times does this have to be proven wrong before people stop spouting it like it's fact? Firstly, the Japanese while not fond of shooters will give them a go now and then. Secondly, the 360 has more than shooters and if anyone thinks otherwise. . well. . I wish them luck graduating from school. They'll need it.

He didn't say specifically that was ALL the 360 has. I don't think anybody believes that. However, there is an image issue with the 360 in that people believe Shooters are dominant and heavily focused on.

Frankly, while I can see your point, I also see his. As an RPG gamer, the 360 has a couple great RPGs, but I wouldn't buy it if I was hoping for more than a couple RPGs a year. I'd be better off sticking with my PS2 which has tons of RPGs. I think that is the issue.

So you said in your post that Japan is not fond of shooters, exactly the same thing I said, but I'm wrong?

LOL, failure.

Shooters don't do well in Japan, this is a fact, don't try and dispute it becuase you're wrong if you do.

So basically japanese only buy games made by japanese companies

mmogoon

Well do to the fact that there isn't one Western third party publisher there besides EA Japan which was just founded.

Not trying to make excuses at all, just trying to understand the market.

Japanese seem to love japanese games exclusively, just trying to understand why, since western gamers tend to go for both japanese and American games.

mmogoon

I'm an expert on this, so I'll explain to you.

As I said before there aren't any Western Publishers in Japan, because company's like Ubisoft and Activision are happy with their piece of the pie in the West. So the only people who publish Western games are more then often niche publishers (basically what Atlus does). So when the publishers release games like Call of Duty to Japan, due to the lack of advertising nobody knows it even exists. It's the same why Fire Emblem or the Shin Megami Tensei franchises have never taken over here, because nobody markets them. So this alone answers why the Xbox franchises has always been a failure in Japan, because games like Oblivion, Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell, etc. either weren't released in Japan or weren't even known to exist.

2nd of all is marketing. Western publishers have no idea WTF they are doing there. Case in point the Japanese Gears of War commercial (and no this isn't a "cultural difference" Nintendo's and SONY's commercials are just fine.. It's more then commercials though from the fact that there is no voice acting in some games (they only contain subs) to the horrid boxarts.

(This is real)

Everything is just a mess.

As of Western games never being popular there, that's just non-sense. Tetris, SimCity, Rare's Games, have been extremely popular there. And games like GTA, Jack & Daxter, and Rachet & Clank (it doesn't show here but remember this game flopped in North America too) have also been pretty successful. Not to mention games such as Resistance and Oblivion carving up some decent sales (think Star Ocean & Tales of series in the West).

So overall I just explained everything throughly.

However as of this "The Japanese only buy Japanese products" is just ridiculous. Japan buys many products from the West such as clothing, movies, food, etc. The only thing where foreign products lack is in electronics. The reason for this is because there is so much competition there amongst that industry. If you sound puzzled let me give a comparison. The United States of America gives much influence to other countries along the side of music, however there are very few bands that make it big there that aren't from North America. Countless musicians have tried such as The Streets, Robbie Williams, etc. but almost all of them have failed (You are from the U.K. so you MUST know what I'm talking about). The reason is simple, it's because there is already so much competition in the American music industry that there is little for other artists. The same can be said about Japan and their electronics industry, but of course like the American music market, some Western products have made it through such as Dell Computers and the IPOD.

Wow the wii sells are pretty bad that thing sells like crazy in America i guess in Japan hand-held gaming is where its at. The Xbox 360 doesn't even have a chance over there i guess Bill better open that bank account and buy square enix and make every game they have xbox 360 only, if they did that then they might have a chance.

SMG numbers are definitely disappointing, but what can you do? I can see it staying around the top 30 for a long time though, like New Super Mario Bros. If that happens, it can actually have good legs and go on to have good LTDs.

People fail to realize that the PS3 outsells the XBOX 360 in both Japan and Europe.

Yea ps3 is pretty much near on par with wii in europe in sales while 360 is behind psp and just ahead of GBA

[QUOTE="rybe1025"]Even with the sales spike for the PS3 it still is not enough to offset how much more the 360 is outselling the PS3 in America so the PS3 is still falling further behind.ZIMdoom

Of course 500k units per month are not normal sales, but we're talking holiday season and Halo release here. The original Xbox even smacked the PS2 during november and december following the Halo 2 release in 2004, and that was with two weeks of extra Halo driven sales during the first month as Halo 2 was released november 9. So with those two extra weeks of momentum left we will see Halo 3 drive sales even more during the second month than Halo 2 did back in 2004. PS3 sold below 25k/week last month with a five week tracking period from NPD, so it will sell below 100k during october because of the four week tracking peroid combined with the reasons I stated in my former post.

There is one problem with your logic here, which I highlighted. Those two games were just released.

As far as those PS3s, it needs to be broken down between how many sold are discontinued and how many are not. In addition, is that the total shipment of Wiis for that week?
