Jim Ryan dodges a question about if God of War: Ragnarok will come to PS4

Sony’s messaging about next-gen PS5 exclusives has been inconsistent to say the least. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan famously stated that the company “believes in generations” earlier this year, leading many to believe that most of their early PS5 titles would be exclusive to that console. But then, only a couple months out from the PS5 launch, Sony did an about-face, quietly announcing games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Horizon Forbidden West would also be coming to the PS4. Of course, the system still has its share of legit exclusives, including Demon’s Souls and the upcoming Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, but what about the game that’s sure to be Sony’s biggest of 2021…God of War Ragnarok?

Well, in a recent interview with The Telegraph, Jim Ryan was outright asked whether God of War Ragnarok would be PS5 exclusives, and the PlayStation CEO provided this unsatisfying answer…

Boy, way to dodge the question, Jim. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean God of War Ragnarok will be crossgen, but you’d think Ryan would be happy to allay fears if it is indeed PS5 exclusive. Then again, there’s those who don’t have a PS5 yet that would likely be just as upset by an exclusivity announcement. There’s just no winning.

Cows arent going to rike this. My prediction is this game either does not come out before Holiday 2022, but if it DOES come out next year, it will be Cross-Gen with PS4. That is unless they cancel/never announce the PS4 version (for optics), in which case it will still be designed with cross gen in mind, so expect reused assets from 2018.

Hell, the reveal trailer didnt even rescore, rearrange, or rerendition the theme music. They literally just copy pasted an MP3 file ripped directly from GOW2018.

Well by not answering the question he answered the question, Ragnarok held back by the PS4 lol.

From a business standpoint, it's hard to ignore those 120 million PS4's out in the wild, especially considering no one can even buy a PS5. If I were Sony, I'd release everything on PS4. Besides, hasn't Sony always had a thing where they support every system for at least 10 years?

It 100% makes sense to release these titles as cross gen titles, even if every PS4 owner is an eventual PS5 owner it will take time for that transition to take place, if you can capitalise software by leveraging an existing user base of many millions you would be very silly not to.

A bit disappointed but as long as the game's good.

I mean they will obviously build it using the same engine as the last game. They are not gonna reboot it again now that they found a formula that worked. So it really should come to the Ps4. Just as Miles Morales did.

I don't think god of war ragnarok will come I think horizon forbidden west is the final big game that will release from 1st party.

Isn't it funny how cows have changed their tune, when MS announced the next 2yrs of generations cow were all, good luck getting next gen games with the SeX being tied to the XB1.

Sony saying they are supporting ps4 for 3-4 years doesn't mean they are releasing 1st party exclusives all the way through the lifespan.

May as well not release next gen.

Even if they choose to release a 30fps 1080p version for PS4 with lower textures and visual fidelity it'll still beat any game that the Xbox has to offer. If they choose not to release it on PS4 that is perfectly fine, it's a system seller.

Well supporting means games, so for the next 3 or 4yrs games will be coming to the PS4 also, that could well be half of the PS5's lifespan.

So at this point R & C is Sony's only next gen game for the forseeable future.

I also stand by by that I don't see the new GoW coming out for the ps4, I could be wrong and time will tell.

On topic - I don't expect Sony to support PS4 for another generation. That's pretty silly. This will be like every other gen where the previous console will have games for the first year or two of the new generation, and then there will be a complete switch over. I'm talking about Sony specifically. Not sure what MS's plans are.

I think the point being made is that Microsoft came out and said they where supporting Xbox One with cross gen games and got a slating on here because it would hold back games on series X. Now its happening to PS4/PS5 the same must apply.

In reality it depends on the developer.

Oh dear. they really committed to that "no generations" thing for a while, huh? So basically the PS5 is just another round of upgrade boxes until Sony feels comfortable enough with breaking away from this current gen. Will PlayStation games be glorified phone apps for the time being with this strategy?
