X360 owners is gonna suffer greatly if this technology catch on (which I'm guessing it will), whereas PS3 owners will enjoy upto 200GB (if i'm not mistaken) of content in a single disk.
it'll be swap fest if a game comes with 80GB textures.

25gb on blu-ray, actually. your mistaken.
John Carmack is genius.
This demo is impressive because it isn't about just graphics. It is about efficiency. How he created an engine that is multi-plat friendly and able to save a lot of money by not having to extend development time due to minor issues, while giving artists their freedom.
Now I wish Carmack can just focus on one system and pull out the maximum power of the console instead of focusing on multi-platform. Imagine what he can create if it went for pure power performance instead of efficiency.
i've seen this before. for 80 gigs, it doesn't look all that great.paullywog
true. i dont know the game looks like a mixture of doom and motorstorm... meh. i find crysis, killzone2, lair, gears, alot more impressive.

80gigs is not efficient...
Thats actually the point. Hes created a system able to take any exhorbitant amount of texture memory and make it a single unified texture.

I'm talking about game development. Carmack's engine saves money.

This is true. They've create quad-layer, 200GB Blu-Ray discs, but the PS3 can't read them. It maxes out at reading the 50GB variety.

right now yes ,at the long run COMPRESSED 200gb yesThe 200 GB discs can't be read by the PS3. It would require a new optical drive.
Edit: It has nothing to do with compression. The discs have more layers.
