i just want to post this because this isnt really fair..i mean people can't even have their opinions now days?...

as the title says im going to use John carmack and his recent quotes to demonstrate the system wars ideology..

This is a pretty accurate description of the various reactions his comments caused here. For a while, you couldn't come into SW's without running into a Carmack thread in which those three fanboy groups were either bashing or praising him.

Great thread. But I just gotta say that Carmack left a **** trail of games. Doom 3 and Quake 4 couldn't be more disappointing.

As for him turning his back on pc gaming, or saying this or that about consoles, from this interview, it seems the guy's just being honest than "lashing out" as some people put it and probably being taken wrong or out of context.

I don't recall getting angry when Carmack said that about PC; I just thought people were misinterpreting it for their own benefit as SW ammo.

All platforms are less important today due to a greater focus on cross platform development. Having two console platforms and Mac vs PC, two quarters of his games audience are consoles Vs one quarter that is PC, so that of course reduces the importance of PC in the development of his games. It has gone from the priority platform to one of many, like what happens in all cross platform games, that is why I think he said it is less important.

Of course SW twisted that into PC gaming is dying and consoles rule :roll:

Being the targeted specification in a game, because you are the lowest common denominator, is not something to boast about.

Carmack knows what he's talking about. Do I really care that Rage on the 360 will have it's graphics degraded because of the limitations of DVD? Yes, to a small degree. But I'm not going to bash the guy. He's a great developer.

After all, he did confirm that the 360 > PS3. :lol:

I will tell why, because he doesn't know how to fix his own problems.

1- 360 problem, don't be cheap and buy the 3rd disk goddammit, is his company really that cheap if their games are the so called legendary?

2- PS3 problem: if he is really the genius and the best developer everyone is been saying, it would be easy for him to develop for the PS3, if he can't, there is another solution, get some help from Sony goddammit, he is so arrogant.

He even talked about every freaking system in the world, he talked about car problems and his next album.

I didn't know you John Carmack until the forums were spread with your nonsense, so if you want to talk, just talk about your games and what they offer instead of being some-kind of a rockstar.

No choice in the matter, when you design for multiple platforms you have to take the weakest specification from each to ensure broad compatibility.

PCs ram speed and latency, PS3s ram capacity, PS3s GPU performance, 360s lack of HDD as a requirement etc.

It's really irritating because SO many devs have been doing that much much more ever since the the new consoles came out, and it's made games (like oblivion) so piss poor I don't even play games anyway near as much as I used too. Consoles just suck, and I'm tired of them.

What I said is an industry standard for dealing with cross platform development, if you disagree you need to present evidence that says otherwise.

Tech 5 is an impressive engine but it still adheres to the limitations of cross platform development. Being able to create unique environments due to using giant textures fed through a fragmentor program; doesn't change that the textures on screen wil be limited to the memory capacity that consoles have. Tech 5 makes cross platform development easier by making development across the platforms almost seamless; but it doesn't accommodate for its performance limitations.

If you know otherwise I'd like to hear it, I wouldn't be upset because if they manage to get around console limitations it is a plus for the PC version. Though whatever you type I'll have to read tomorrow as it is late here.

I've watched the video about the 360 and the moment he started to talk about how costly it is to buy the 3rd disk was the moment I thought the company is cheap.

What you just said is only true if you got the same 3 people saying different things. It's the same with anything like this. A lot of PS3 owners say they didn't like Trophies and then everyone assumes they all don't. Not true.

It tickled me that he was one of the first legitimate sources to come out and say BluRay had given them an advantage to then almost in the same breath say the 360 hardware was superior and the only advantage the PS3 had was optical storage:lol:
