John Carmack:You need a 3.68 Teraflop GPU to match PS4's GPU

Carmack is overestimating how well optimized consoles are going to be out the door.  Yes, a few years down line that might be true, but not right out the door.  360 / PS3 launch titles weren't crushing PC graphics on early titles, even though console hardware was close to high end PC components at the time. The upcoming consoles haven't even been released yet and are already significantly behind in terms of hardware.

Is this why we still see threads asking whether people prefer 60fps or 1080?

I not only enjoyed this conversation, it did change my opinion.

I had a wrong impression this gen, and now I know that it's because there was a grand design shift in GPUs, presented earlier on consoles than on PC.

Since it's not the same case this time, I'm more inclined in spending my money on a gaming rig now, and earlier than expected.

Glad to talk to you. 

I have a family, so I don't have a lot of cash flow. I've found the best time to splurge on a PC is 2yrs. into the gen, and ~2yrs. before the beginning of a new gen. The great thing about PC is that you can build for the future and step up over time without dropping $500+ on a GPU.

Consoles still have exclusives that make them worthy of purchase. I'm struggling with the idea of having to pay $400+ for online play after getting fed up with paying for Gold all these years. Still, I'm a tech whore, so I spend money on electronics any chance I get. >_>

You can do more with Console hardware than you can with PC hardware. Console visuals get better over time as Devs get more familiar with the hardware. Just look at what Rockstar is doing with GTAV. Also, it has alot to do with optimization. Alot of PC games out there are terribly optimized.

The 8800GTX was a damn late 2006 GPU that cost $600 dollars,you are comparing summer 2005 GPU to late 2006 GPU,hell that GPU is 2 series over the PS3 GPU,Is like comparing the PS4 GPU with a GPU from the the line of card beyond Volcanic Island,not with Volcanic Island but with GCN 3.

Wish I had a better direct feed to compare it to but here is one.

360 image is an upscaled direct feed image from Digital Foundry, the upscale method is the best you can find so it's either going to look similar or worse on your own tv's upscaler.
