JRPGs will come to the Xbone says Spencer

Xbox has never been the place for JRPG fans. They've always been off in their clubhouse, playing Shin Megami Tensei and reading about how to make your hair all pointy and gravity-defying. But that might be about to change.

A user on Twitter asked Xbox overlord Phil Spencer if we'd ever see JRPGs come to the Xbox One. The world held its breath. Dogs ceased to bark. Cars everywhere stopped in the streets. But rather than smiting the young man where he stood, Phil Spencer merely answered: "You will see JRPGs on Xbox One."

It's a move that makes sense after poor sales in Japan, especially given the recent resignation of Xbox Japan boss Takashi Sensui. It's probably also a welcome change for JRPG fans, as Xbox has never been the place to go to for games like Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger. We've got Final Fantasy Type-0 and Final Fantasy XV coming, but wouldn't it be nice to have games that weren't just Final Fantasies?

In fact, at least one studio is already hard at work making an RPG - the devs behind time-twisting Remember Me, Dontnod, have put up a job listing for an experienced designer "with strong experience in RPG or Action RPG". In the meantime, they're working on Life is Strange, a quiet indie tale of adolescence with a sci-fi twist. Exciting stuff!

What kind of JRPGs would you like to see on Xbox One? Personally, we'd love a bit of Persona.

every single JRPG on X360 flopped and the same will happen on the Xbone. All the weaboos like me are with PlayStation. ;)

There was never any doubt there will be JRPGs on the Bone. But this also doesn't portend any increased focus going forward. It's a fluff piece that stretches a banal one sentence quote into 5 paragraphs of alternating snark and daydreaming. A perfect example of empty hype.

Let's face it, this is the mentality of most Xbox users. Any JRPGs that do come to the Xbone will sell miserably.

Everyone knows jrpgs are for nintendo and Sony. Shooters define the xbox.

The PC has more JRPGs than Xbox does.

Lost Odyssey 2. I bought a 360 when I knew that Mistwalker signed that contract with MS. That needs to happen again. If it does I'll go out and buy a X1 and wait patiently.

That speculative article is stupid. The fluff piece is full of hot air. The 'article' is basing multiple paragraphs on one single line fast twitter response from Spencer, who could have just been indicating FF15.

Dontnod is a Paris-based studio which is another stupid thing to mention in an article based around JRPGs and one twitter response.

The big-name jrpgs like Final Fantasy will definitely continue to come to Xbox One. I sort of doubt the more niche titles will since Xbox has no market share in Japan, but who knows.

They already had the makings of a great JRPG franchise for Xbox in Lost Odyssey and they abandoned it.

Atlus is likely in need of money, or Sega who now pretty much owns them for that matter, pay them to get Persona 5 ports on Xbox One, that's likely an easy option, or better yet an HD console port of Persona 3 & 4. I doubt there's anything obligating them to publish exclusively for Sony, they probably just do so because it's inherently a stronger market for the Japanese to play on as well as for western audiences that play JRPGs. After all the Persona license has popped up on Xbox as for Persona Arena, on 3DS for Persona Q. I don't see a reason to deny them ports on those titles if they're willing to pay. I hope though they don't pay for some lame or lackluster JRPGs, like last gen with Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, Tales of Vesperia, Last Remnant, Infinite Undiscovery, Star Ocean: Last Hope. Hey, since I suggested paying off Sega, how about both trying to acquire timed exclusive access to Resonance of Fate and/or Valkyria Chronicles. I'd also like remakes of Sega's old IPs like the Panzer Dragoon series, mainly Panzer Dragoon Orta, and possibly Panzer Dragoon Saga.

Finally, you have some good taste.

Considering Lost Odyssey was crap and Mistwalker is currently focused on their mobile game Terra Battle, fat chance.

I forgot Phantom Dust reboot is coming out on Xbone.

I mean it wouldn't hurt to have more entries in that genre, but what would be nice is if more jrpgs were actually fucking good again. SRPGs aside (because I do think they are a different beast entirely), there were some gems last gen like The Souls games (shut up they are totally a japenese role playing game ...fucking idiot), The world ends with you, or something like Ni Nu Kuni, there was also a bunch of fucking dated, stale, run of the mill, played out fluff like Lost Odyssey or Tales of Vesperia, Tales of whatever the **** since that franchise might as well be jrpg equivalent of dynasty warriors at this point.

Genre could also use some more evolutionary games as well, genuine improvement to genre bullshit like i don't know, the atrocious ass pacing in the turn based rpgs where instead of giving me genuine satisfying gameplay, I get compulsive shit that is meant to be "good" because it's 50 hours long, but the game ran out of ideas at the 10 hour mark...or when they pull nonsense like Bravely Default.

Xenoblade was sort of a unique entry as a jrpg, but its mmo combat on a gamepad. It's keyboard gameplay on a wiimote. Get real.
