Just a ps4. Question about internet speed.

Ok, so as the title says I just got a PS. I am now updating and the download speed is unbelievably slow. I have a X1 and Wii U connected to the same wireless network and never had this kind of trouble. Even turned on my X1 to see if there was something wrong but all was normal. It's above the 60m now to download about 700mb.

Is this the normal Sony speed? Are there network problems? Can my PS be faulty?

if you google it, it's a widespread issue... basically the PS4 does not have the best network card, the wifi is the biggiest culprit, it is not 5ghz enabled just 2.4.

While the Bone does have 5ghz, you may notice faster speeds depending on your router settings.

if anything, just hard connect it.. if you can use an ethernet cable, it will give you the best experience

This is not a system wars talking point, but as a PS3 owner, PSN has always been shit and I doubt the PS4 changed that factoid.

Sure ppl claim "it works fine for me" but I've talked to so many people who gave up on Playstation just because of network issues.

It doesn't matter how good the hardware is, if it takes 2 days to download a movie.

Yeah sony has always had weak download speeds, it took me 3 hours to download the division 2.5gb last night

Try this. It helped with my speed issues, as I was struggling even with a 120Mb/S connection. A little frustrating, for sure.

Hmmmm all major gaming sites including this site did a speed test between PS4 and X1 a few months after both had been out, and they all came to the same conclusion that the PS4 >>> X1.

Now... I dont know if something has happened since then (PS4 got slower, or X1 got faster) but I havent noticed my PS4 download speed getting slower

Yes, I'm not hoping for PC speed, but am very surprised by this. Now waiting for a game to update... My god. Thankfully I was not thinking on playing online on the PS.

As a side note... The light on the controller is genius. The way as it gets reflected on the screen really adds to the experience. I wonder if nobody questioned this design decision.

@kend0_kap0ni: More than likely that location plays a factor as well. I live right on the border of US/Canada (Niagara) and my PS4 is pretty terribad, and my Xbone isn't all that much better. Meanwhile Steam can download steadily at almost 12MB/S, which is nice.

Use a different DNS server or set up a DNS cache server.

Utterly retarded that Sony haven't fixed that problem with it hammering the DNS server multiple times a second.

Use wired if possible. Wired up i get about 6MB/s download for my ps4. Wireless (the router is close) i get only about 1.5MB/s download, which is fine for multiplayer... Not so much for downloading!

The wireless card on the ps4 is not amazing at all. That said i think the Xbox One went cheap on wireless cards too, since my XBO only gets just over 2MB/s download by wireless. By comparison my pc gets 23MB/s download, so it's not like my router or Internet are bad.

@sts106mat: do you find you get wildly inconsistent download speeds on your XBO? Regardless of if my XBO is wired or wireless, i seem to get games downloading at about four times the speed of patches. Usually not a problem until there's a system update or a patch of many GB...

For crying out loud dude, wire the damn thing, it´s not like if an ethernet cable costs hundreds of dollars.

I have Fios and pay for 50/50, I usually get in the 20s on my PS4 with a wired connection.

Its the WiFi card. It has to be.

It could be but I haven't seen any speed problems from my PS4 even though I'm on Wifi. There are a whole boat load of issues trying to get to the bottom of slow wireless speeds. As of March 2015, it did not support 5GHz wirelss so its stuck on the much crowded 2.4GHz frequency range. If you have an Android phone, go download a Wifi analzer and check what channels are most in use in your area then check what channel your wireless router is broadcasting on. If you are broadcasting on a crowded channel then you are going to get a shit speed no matter how good the connection is because everyone else is stomping all over your data.

anyhow, got to SETTINGS > NETWORK > TEST INTERNET CONNECTION and tell us what your download/upload speed is and NAT Type see if that helps, it might help to go into router settings and manually set up a static IP for your PS4, then either port forward (figure out what you need to do there) or maybe designate your static IP as a router's DMZ

anyhow, despite peoples bitching if I had to guess the only limiting factor as to peoples connections are typically limited either by their ISP or home network setup

on my Xbox One and PS4 I've done just fine with a moderate NAT type not doing any static IP and port forwarding / DMZ

as other mentioned above, trying different channel on your router and see if that might helps, if you live in an apartment complex with multiple routers that might be causing you some grief, but if it's the case you're wireless then I'd suggest just going wired, if you're like me then you're the only one in the house that needs a solid internet connection and everybody else just uses it to watch porn then they can connect wirelessly

They both seem to download quite slow at different times, I've never used more inconsistent services in my life, while Steam for example is always the same speed every time.

Steam allows you to check which server you are connected to and its load level. Being based in the UK I have two (last time I checked) servers to pick from, London and Manchester. XBL and PSN does not allow you to pick and choose which content server you want to connect to.

I'm well aware of this, it always defaults the best connection for your area, whereas the other two seem to just try to pull data from whatever is available.

The issue is the 2.4 card. 2.4 is slower and has less channels. If you and more speed you have to go wired or use a 5gz ac media hub.

Which isn't going to do squat because the card in the console is 2.4...

I downloaded a 4.2 GB path in under 10 minutes for Helldivers last Thursday. I found that acceptable.

Wire the damn thing, the wireless adapter in ps4 is absolute garbage and changing the name server may give you better response times but most likely doesnt affect your data transfer rates at all

@ZombieKiller7: Same here, I have bunch of friends with PS4s or who used to have them and they would always complain about it. Btw I also highly recommend plugging an Ethernet cable to your console.

I remember last year when my brother plugged his PS4 up beside the Wii U and its wireless internet couldnt reach the router. We had to move it about 3 feet forward and put it on small end table. I think its just a super crappy wireless card.

Even wired the connection is trash.

PS4 only uses 60Mbs to 70Mbs of my connection.
