Man, i really can't wait to get my hands on this game. it looks incredible.

And just to preempt this, yes I know, and they know, and everyone knows that games like The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall or the upcoming No Man's Sky are technically bigger, but they are procedurally generated worlds- it is abundantly clear that they are referring to actual designed worlds with this claim.

Man its stuff like this that makes me think that open world games these days are getting seriously overkill on the map size.

I am one of those people that think that Skyrim was a good size.

Well yeah MMO's and racing games should have bigger maps for pretty obvious reasons (surprised on the Daggerfall one, haven't played it). Won't discount those games as they certainly are huge, but I still think JC3 is certainly insane for an open world.

Been playing around with the second one recently. The world size is nice, but they need to work on the sandbox aspect of it so that I'm not doing the same thing over and over again. More options would be nice.

Yeah I played JC2. Thought that game had enough tbh. Then again map size tends to be a hot topic nowadays, so you might as well flaunt it.

Oh well. It certainly will be an epic game.

If it's that huge and very lively/populated and detailed world then awesome. Hope it isn't large just for the sake of being large (open spaces).

Have a feeling usual traversal speeds can also be a factor on what feels big or not so big.

Anyway, have they shown a legitimate console version running?

Don't really care, I've played just cause 1 and 2. Being happy that your map is 400 square miles, with 299 square miles of that being almost nothing, filled with generic characters with 12 different generic character models, and the same 3 missions over and over again does nothing for me.

Bigger does not mean better. This is a meaningless metric designed to market this game to stupid people.

And I say this as a fan of the series.

I'll take an extremely well designed, hand carved world that is very detail rich and content dense than a giant environment that doesn't feel as polished.

Did you know that The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall is actually bigger at 62,394 square miles?

In all seriousness, no developer these days crafts an open world game without using some procedural generation.

No where near the top of that list, The Crew at 3500 Square miles. Which is larger then the state of Rhode island. and pretty much the size of maine, is still smaller than Fuels map.

@nyadc: yeah yeah yea i know that but the core mechanics of the game are not for me. im not exactly having "fun" running around and blow everything up brainlessly. Its like the latest RedFaction game, stopped playing it after 1-2h because it felt like a physics benchmark than a video game.

I'm glad, while I don't really need my RPGs much bigger, games with fighter jets and what not need to be a bit bigger to make the speed necessary :P

It's a nice stat but it's down to how well they fill that world with content. There's definitely some games that are going with larger map sizes but wind up with a barren or uninteresting world where only specific areas have worthwhile content anyway.

I hear it's not necessarily a bigger map than Just Cause 2. It's roughly the same size as Just Cause 2' map but it's way more packed and diverse. There were very empty parts of Just Cause 2's map and a lot of the content was extremely redundant. I'm happy they are addressing that rather than just making the map bigger.

Bethesda did that with Skryim. Skyrim's map is not much bigger than Morrowwind or Oblivion's but it's packed way more full of content.

That;'s impressive, because I'm playing Witcher 3 right now and I think that;s huge for a game world.

Now that big of an area has to be interesting with stuff to do, side missions, ect or it will be not worth traveling to or be boring.

Sandbox games are the one place where "It's not the size, but how you use it" totally applies.

I don't give a shit how big your game is if it's total filler.
