Oh hell no, no reason to get rid of them. They are still far too useful. What if you need to burn a cd for your car or something?

Yes and no... The drive is still in there, but it doesn't work, it's just there to make my computer prettier at this point, since I don't know where the bit is that was there before the drive.

Umm no. Why would I remove the drives? The $5 resale value doesn't make it worth it.

It would be rather foolish for most to do that. Need to reinstall your OS, well unless you have a perfect copy with all drivers installed already on a bootable drive, you're hosed. I know my PC for instance can't even get on the net without a driver install.

Put windows install on a bootable usb drive, not the final installed state of windows. :?

Like I said, unless said usb also comes with the drivers already up and running, many people can't even get their network running (mine for instance needs a driver, until that is installed, no network). So you need to already used the drive to put the install on the usb, just to get rid of the drive... might as well just do an image at that point. Also doesn't help you much if you ever decide to do a clean install of the next OS version. I'm sure you can get around it, but why bother. Just have the drive.

I haven't and won't remove them because there is no need to. I can download everything digitally or use physical media, I get physical copies of games mostly.

If it's Windows 7 it should be no problem. But yeah, why waste a usb drive?

Yeah, I've been thinking of getting a Blu-Ray burner, since the lower speed compared to my DVD drive doesn't really matter anymore.

But having no optical drive at all is silly.

I sold my DVD burner for $11. I got $50 for the DVD burner on my laptop (which I replaced with a 2.5-inch drive bay).

As for drivers... I never, ever found myself using drivers from a CD. Never. It's a waste of plastic. As for Windows, you can download the .iso files directly from Microsoft (you will still need to buy an actual key to install), but you can just format a USB drive, copy the .iso onto there, and boot off of it to install.

Most modern motherboards support USB boot, so it's never a problem.

As for software, everything is being tied to some activation system anyways, so you can't resell your games like you used to, so why have DVD cases cluttering up your bookcase?

Scenario. You buy a new printer because your old one breaks. It comes with an installation / set-up disc.

No printer for you.

You can download stuff like that from the official website or find it online somewhere... Not a big deal. But personally I find it pointless to remove the disk drives.

If you can't get the drivers online then your printer is made by one shady-ass company.

A year or two ago, this move would have been crazy.

But yes, I've done it. I've sold all of the DVD drives I own and I plan to buy all of my software digitally from now on. I still retain a PS3 for movies, but otherwise, it's a diskless future for me. There is no longer any point to having a DVD drive. Windows can be reinstalled via USB sticks. Games can be bought digitally.

So, PC gamers, have you gotten rid of your DVD drives yet?

The_Capitalist
Burning cd's making DVD movies(doesn't have to be pirated just regular home movies), this would be an unwise thing to do for everyone but i can see how some people might not need them.i have 7mb internet and to download a full robust game it's gonna take along time still so i rather have my disc for games.

i also think in the future(8th gen) when PC games have more info eventually there gonna be 20-40gb downloads blu ray might be an option for PC because the downloads can take a day or 2 if servers are packed, DD is an option for PC now but PC games are rarley over 1 DVD, DD have been around for year even during the 7 cd games and DVD still made it to be the mainstream for PC games so don't doubt one day that empty slot on your disc drive will have a blu ray player.

Windows 7/Vista come up the ability to burn DVD. And for XP users there is plenty of easy to use software. Besides, if it's family videos, than you probably don't want the entire world to be able to see them

Nope. I still pop in a DVD and watch on my computer every now and then, but aside from that, there's also games out there that are too massive for me to be willing to wait for a download (Witcher 2, Dragon Age, and most MMOs that are over 20 gigs). Which isn't much of a loss, since most retail games end up using Origin or Steamworks anyway, and MMOs don't even need the disc in when you play it :P.

Yea I don't think so, I think optical media has this one last (next)generation 'til it goes the way of the floppy. The internet infrastructure is constantly improving and the next-next gen is a minimum of 8-10 years away, by then, I don't expect many people to be down at sub 2MB/s internet speeds (not megabit(usual measure for internet speed), byte).

remember folks all them old grandmas have youtube capable media boxes hooked to their tvs as well as wireless networks to run em so they can just use youtube... Seems to me your working very hard to convince your self that your path was right and while it may be for you its not for others dvd drives are not archaic many people still need them for many purposes.

Not the same thing, though.

I realized that I wasn't using my DVD drives much, so I sold them for a bit of money. This would have been crazy a few years ago, but I'm moving ahead. DVDs will be obsolete within 10 or 15 years.

No. I have a Blu-ray reader / DVD/CD writer on mine. I don't use it much, but I like having options.
