So just played some extreme HD gaming with a rez of 2600 by 1600 with a gtx295 I think it was, the games I played in that rez were borderlands, fallout3, dirt2, lost planet, and so on and just WOW, Im a big console fan but it made 720p seem so damn weak, the consoles are extremely outdated and it's time for the next lot of consoles to come out because they missed the mark with having crappy 720p it looks like the old standard tvs, I cant believe sony and microsoft brought out such weak consoles that cant even hold a native 1080p rez as standard.

Resolution isn't everything...there was a thread yesterday were somebody "proved" that a game from 10 years ago had better graphics than UC2 because it ran in a higher resolution. No. And whilst I agree that having that extra resolution can make things crisper, all that would do is show flaws more clearly, like jaggies.

I would have thought so too, but with that high rez for some reason there isnt a jaggie insite, and I was running it with No AA on at all.

But you right a high rez doesnt = graphics king or anything, thats down to shaders and all that, But the High rez also brought out more detail in things, it would atleast be nice to have a 1080p standard for consoles because 720P isnt real good.

Graphics are a combination of various things, Polygons, textures, AA, Framerate, Resolution, not to mention other things devs have to juggle like physics, particles, etc.

Resolution is what this thread is about? That's nice, but remember, there is more to it that that. As far as mocking the PS3, 360, and Wii for being consoles, remember, consoles have FIXED hardware PC's don't. You can upgrade PC's every year.

I have had this conversation every generation it seems like.

Well since hardly anyone would have played in a native rez of 2600 by 1600 I though id share, the monitors cost a lot of money.

are you sure you are actually playing 2600x1600, what is you moniter's native resolution. Moniter's are just like TVs, they have a native resolution and anything above it doesn't add any actual pixels.

but but can it play mario,zelda,MGS,halo,unchart...? -.- Really though, it is all well and good that you can play at such a resolution - but in the end 720p, 1080i, 1080p are good enough. 720p on my 22" TV is good enough for me.

But it is much much easier to optimize games for specific hardware, which allows console devs to push out good graphics with **** hardware.

People always say resolution doesn't matter, but most of them wouldn't want to go back to playing on SDTVs. Games in the end are just pixels on the screen, and the more the better, the current 720p is still under 1 megapixel, to think that's the optimal resolution would be naive.

Agreed 100%.

I took a break from pc gaming for the last couple months in 2009 and played 360 games. So I kinda got used to console graphics. When I built my new rig this year, the graphics blew me away. Almost every game I've played on my new computer looks far better than gears 2 and resi 5 for 360. 1080p with 60 fps is far more pleasing on the eye.

Mulitplats say yes. If you people want to take it literally like they are doing in this thread then more power to you all. Consoles dropped the ball when it came to HD gaming, I don't think MS and sony realised how much hardware they needed for 1080p.

that has nothing to do with it, or are you going to say now that the ps3 has no problem with 1080p? all games run in it, and such? the ps3 has just as much of a problem with 1080p as the 360 in that its just not powerful enough to run it native. Neither company should have tried 1080p but they were forced to by the TV developers. the majority of consumers in the world still own 720p sets not 1080p yet all programing is being catered to 1080p for no reason at all.

Didn't sony state the PS3 could do 1080p at 60 FPS, 4D etc etc? Either way these consoles were supposed to be the HD step into gaming and they fell short.

Higher resolution results in less jaggies, not more jaggies. Face it, higher resolution makes games look a tonne better, the only people saying it doesn't are the people who haven't experienced it.

So..higher res means a better looking game all of a sudden?racing1750

Yes, that's always how it's been. If resolution wasn't such a big deal sony wouldn't be bragging about 1080p, if resolution wasn't such a big deal then why are a LOT of the most popular console games running less than 720p?
