Kamiya explains why Bayonetta 3 is Switch Exclusives in 15 tweets

• Bayonetta 2 was supposed to be a Multi-plat game, Sega had funded partially but, had internal issues that stopped funding the game, so Nintendo came in and funded the game
• Bayonetta 3 is 100% funded by Nintendo and Kamiya is truly grateful that it's being made.
• Game development is still a business

I've got something I want to tell you all. It's about Bayonetta 3.

We are a developer that creates games by signing contracts with publishers and receiving funds from them in order to cover development costs. For Bayonetta 1, we signed a contract with Sega and received funds from them, then we proposed a design for the game and entered production. All of the rights belong to Sega.

At the time, our company had only just been established, and we weren't properly equipped for multiplatform development, so after discussing with Sega, we decided to develop the game exclusively for Xbox 360. However, after that, one of Sega's trading partners ended up making a port for PS3, at Sega's behest. More recently, they also decided that a Steam version should be developed, which was released last year. Sega owns the rights to all of these versions.

When we started making Bayonetta 2, we initially received funds from Sega to develop the game for multiple platforms, but the project was halted due to circumstances at Sega. Nintendo then stepped in to continue funding the game, allowing us to finish it. As such, the rights belong to Sega and Nintendo. The rights owners decided the game should be made for Wii U. Nintendo was also kind enough to fund a port of Bayo 1 for Wii U, and they even allowed us to use the Japanese voice track we created for the Wii U version in the PC version of Bayo 1 as well.

I am extremely thankful to Nintendo for funding the game, and to Sega for allowing them to use the Bayonetta IP.

As for Bayonetta 3, it was decided from the start that the game was going to be developed using Nintendo's funding. Without their help, we would not have been able to kick off this project. All of the rights still belong to Sega and Nintendo. The rights owners decided that the game should be made for Switch. Game development is a business. Each company has its own circumstances and strategies. Sometimes this means games get made, sometimes it means they get cancelled. But I believe that every single person involved is dedicated to delivering the best possible experience. I know that, to me at least, that's one of the biggest goals when I set to work.

I cannot express how happy I am that we get to make Bayonetta 3, and we intend to do everything within our power to make it as good as it can be. That's all we can do, and we consider it our greatest mission.

It took a while for production of Bayonetta 3 to be okayed, but now that it has kicked off, I hope it will turn into a wonderful encounter for all of you.

I don't need the details. Just give me a Bayonetta 3 sequel and don't even care where it lands on.

@FireEmblem_Man: I understand there's lots of demanding Beyonetta 2 & (soon to be release) 3 to be ported to PC the most, I won't denied that. Part of me is also asking a PC port, but I'm not gonna go out of my way and bitch about it. If there's a single game I wanna play but can't play it on my favorite system, then I'll gladly buy that system just to play one game and it's not like I done that the first time.

Of course I'd rather play Bayo 2 and Bayo 3 on another platform, but I'm just glad the games can exist at all. If Nintendo had to be the ones to make it happen, then so be it.

I was always gonna buy a switch for this game. Will get Mario and Bayo 3 when it's out. That will be a nice combo I reckon.

Basically don't support this guy on PC platform. Zero point money doesn't go to sequels towards your platform.

@ConanTheStoner: Amen to that. Sony or MS could have helped them with Bayo3 (well probably not MS after the whole scalebound fiasco) but they didn't, Nintendo did. At least the game is going to happen, which I'll take over the alternative of it not happening.

I bought Bayonetta 1 for $12 CAD during the Steam winter sale. I wouldn't mind grabbing it on the Switch as well, but knowing Nintendo, it will probably be a full price release.

I'm pretty sure that it's going to be much different than previous games.(Since Bayo 2 bombed hard)

They are probably making it an open world action RPG.

Well, when they've been cleaning out of stuff that aren't selling (basically, anything that isn't Sonic the Hedgehog, Total War, and Yakuza) can't blame them.

They're $80 on Amazon Canada with Prime (which is the price of a new game here). Not a great deal over here. I'm guessing it'll be the same on the Nintendo e-shop.

@UssjTrunks: I purchased them digitally already through the online shop. After I purchased Bayonetta 1, the 2nd game was discounted to 40 dollars.

The Canadian eshop has Bayonetta 2 for $65. Does this include the first game too? The store page has barely any information.

Correct but they saved a few bucks by making Bayo 1 just a download code. Which is super annoying. Same thing happened with Resident Evil Revelations- you get the card for the first game, download code for the 2nd.

If people wanted digital they would buy digital, when people buy physical they want physical! It's just a way for the publishers to save a few bucks by not having to include 2 game cards in the box.

@UssjTrunks: both were listed at full price digitally... I wanna say 29.99 and 39.99? Sold separately. Once I bought Bayonetta 1, the discount was applied to Bayonetta 2 which made the whole package 60 bucks I think.... Shoot, now I gotta look.

To be honest, port begging for Bayonetta is a troll thing now. On the PS3 and Xbox 360 combined, it barely cracked a million. On two systems that sold approximately 160-170 million combined. I highly doubt they really cared that much if they didn't even buy the game. Kamiya made a good decision to make it exclusive to Nintendo. They sold decently for a low selling system and they got to be on Super Smash Brothers (which is a HUGE deal, even Konami begged for Snake to be on Brawl).

Need a switch just to play Bayonetta 3... Sigh.

This is most likely a troll. On two platforms with combined sales of 160-170 million, Bayonetta 1 barely cracked a million. Only a minority of gamers cared about it. This is why it's a great move to keep it on Nintendo. It's a new exclusive IP for fans and the got to be on Super Smash Brothers, which is a huge honor.

In 2018 we see Nintendo with Bayonetta and Disney with Deadpool.

Probably not that hard at all. I'm not sure if you've noticed this, but Nintendo and Sega's relationship has drastically improved over the last couple decades. They went off and made those Mario and Sonic Olympic games, and Sonic is a two-time Smash Bros. fighter now, and he might just become a veteran fighter for any and all future Smash Bros. titles.
