http://kotaku.com/gaming/kane-%26-lynch/kane--lynch-site-fibbing-about-reviews-scores-329529.php

It's not like the relationship between Kane & Lynch and review scores wasn't messy enough. But now this? Visitors to the game's official site will notice, once the page's flash intro is done, that two review scores for the game are flashed for your perusal. One from GameSpy, one from Game Informer. Both look positively glowing! Both give the game a very encouraging five stars! Thing is, both are...well, not real. They're fabricated. Lies, if you will.

GameSpy did not say "It's the best emulation of being in the midst of a Michael Mann movie we've ever seen" in their review of the game. They said that in their E3 2007 coverage. In other words, a preview. They also did not give the game five stars. They gave it three.

As for Game Informer, same deal. The highlighted quote does not appear in the review of the game. Nor do they give it five stars. Game Informer don't even score in stars. They gave it a 7/10.

To assist you in correcting your error, Eidos, and you in procuring all the necessary facts, dear reader, attached below are how the two review selections should appear.

Fake Review

Real Review

UPDATE: It just keeps getting deeper for Eidos

From Kotaku again.

http://kotaku.com/gaming/eidos/did-we-give-kane--lynch-5-stars-329539.php

With review integrity in crisis, who can you trust? Not those score whores at Kotaku, that's for sure. Not only did they give Kane & Lynch a glowing endorsement (read: "Kane & Lynch makes Grand Theft Auto look like the cartoon it is") in their exclusive review, they went and gave it a perfect five star rating! Or, least Eidos seem to think so. For those curious, the quote actually comes from Joel's hands-on time with the game at E3. In July. Where no stars were handed out. Not even one. Oh Eidos.

If you go to the K&L website it has those fake quotes from the GI and Gamespy reviews right on the page. GI and Gamespy did not say those thingsin their reviews about the game.

That's my point. These are quotes from early previews of the game. Eidos has every right to use them to plug their game. Hollywood does the same thing, and has done the same thing for years - grasp at any 3-word noodle from a big-name critic for a quote to hype their films. Look at the back of a DVD case for a bad movie!

True, but still they show the wrong review scores. That part is wrong and misleading.

Disney couldprint "Chicken Little is the greatest animated film ever" if a magazine said that, but they can't make up scores for it.

They even fibbed on the number of stars the game received....not only the wording. I don't know many places that give a star rating to only a preview.

Just because it doesn't specifically label them as reviews doesn't mean it's not incredibly, incredibly misleading and clearly designed to look like reviews.

Are these guys planning to disband and leave the gaming world or something? They've sucessfully alienated the gaming community with one title, I suppose money today outweighs the prospect of being a successful company. They could have spent the time making a good title and building their name instead of trying to pull the wool over everyone's eyes.

Technically there's just a border of stars, no reivew score to speak of. Misleading? Hells yes.

I highly, highly doubt this is the first time something like this has happened; but considering the timing and circumstance this is rather unfortunate.

They never claim to say those are review scores. Nowhere on the site does it say that those stars and those quotes are from any review! Here, watch this: 10 "...manages to transcend nearly every boundary put forth..." -GameSpot I pulled that from the metacritic site for Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing. Am I mis-quoting anything? No. I just took - word-for-word - what I wanted from GameSpot's review of Big Rigs, and added the number 10 because that's the number that they have there. My point is that anybody can make a quote out of anything that is glowing. Hollywood and the news media have been doing it for years, and for anybody to, all of a sudden, call out Eidos on it is pretty hypocritical and blind.

It appears that Kane & Lynch is the most infamous game of 2007... not because it's an average game according to the numerous reviews, but because of the tactics by Eidos to mislead people about the game. Well, that and the whole Jeff thing.

I am aware some quotes are misused, but this one is especially bad.

http://www.gamebump.com/go/official_kane_and_lynch_website_lies_about_its_scores

Just looking at the pics you can tell Eidos was trying to make it look like those were reviews.

Roger Ebert, the movie critic, got ticked off when he saw a few of his quotes misused. Studios made it sound like he was praising a movie he outright hated, but they honed in on the one positive line. It doesn't happen anymore because he put a stop to that. And so, while this stuff happens, it's not right, and I bet if Gamespy really cared enough they could make Eidos take off the quote or at least attach the proper source and review score.

And about the Big Rigs example you gave. I dont think any DVD box or video game poster or site has ever made up a score like that. They can take words but they can't make up numbers or final scores. I've never seen that before and if you have real examples of that I'd like to see it. (and that's why we're kind of attacking Eidos because it really looks like they are trying to position Kane & lynch as 5-star games)

What he was basically saying in his example is that Eidos never says the company/site gives the game that score, they just have the stars there. They are heavily, very very heavily misleading someone to think that's what the reviewers gave the game that score.

They are obviously using slimey rotten tactics. To argue about the "degree of sliminess" which they are using is immaterial. It's wrong regardless.

Why are you guys defending Eidos, No one is saying that Eidos can't do that as its perfectly legal to post those quotes. We're are merely commenting on the fact that they ARE doing it while they are already under fire with the GSmember firing ordeal.

Paul_Phoenicks, you're merely circling around the truth. they may not have said that these are reviews. in fact, they don't have to. because everyone can plainly see (except for you, though) that these are being passed on as reviews - making players see them as reviews. i suppose you believe those stars are for graphic design, or something?

like i said, you're merely putting excuses and denying the obvious facts. don't waste your time. it's sad, really, how eidos is turning out.

But, they're not making up a score. Nowhere - at all - on the site does it say those are reviews. Oh, and: Pluto Nash: garbage movie, but they grasped on a quote about Eddie Murphy. Or, how about this one for Alone in the Dark:

Why are you even trying to stick up for them? Are there no other threads that interest you right now and you just wanna argue something?

They are obviously using slimey rotten tactics. To argue about the "degree of sliminess" which they are using is immaterial. It's wrong regardless.

honestly i dont know y he would stick up for them aswell

and 1 thing that annoys me is when ppl say well some other company does it or media outlet does it too, last i checked 2 wrongs dont make a right, just cause hollywood does it doesnt mean its ok.

obviously it was very misleading, u can use the quotes but assigning stars? since when does a preview have stars, very misleading to say the least and i dunno y anyone would defend them.

Unbelievable.

I've lost more respect for Eidos than I have for Gamespot and that is really saying a lot.

The last great game I played from EIDOS was Theif on PC. Excellent game... damn, this really hurts their credibility.

I think what we are seeing would be the chickens coming home to roost.

This is proof that gaming and the gaming media needs to grow up as a entertainment medium.

And haveing a standard of ethics is part of good buisness, and that maturity.

The quote of the century

Do not patronize me by telling me the reader is the customer-your real customer is the one that pays you your revenue," 3DO president Trip Hawkins said in an e-mail to GamePro after one of his games was panned. "And it is game industry advertisers."
