he machine itself is a lot more futureproof, there's a lot more to it – the whole idea of SPUs and the cell processor, I think they're a lot more enticing, because there's just that much more power under the hood that people want to explore – I think the techheads will look at the specs and say, well, let's try and unlock all of that power

What do you think to this?

Why is it " Locked " in the first place ? I mean for the price of that system Sony should give the devs & gamers the unlocked version. j/k but only a lil bit. :P

I think Sony needs to "unlock" the power and then share how they did it in their new dev kits. Then you will find that a lot of 3rd party support that has gone to the X360 would come back.

I still haven't seen Sony unlock anything.

Wow, again, another dev. working on a SONY game says positive things about the game AND system its coming out on in a few months! Wow!!! What a concept! What's next,we'll hear Peter Molyneau will say how great the Xbox 360 is and that devs should unlock its power too while saying great things about Fable 2? Oh wait.. that's happened too.

There is no such thing as future-proof, and every developer tries to unlock a systems power.

This smacks of marketing hype.

Maybe it's my imagination but it seems most devs complain about the PS3....heck didn't one just flat out say they give up and won't release a PS3 version of their games? Sony should have known this was going to happen, why Sony didn't have an upgraded dev kit ready to go within a year for all developers is hard to understand. Why do so many people struggle when you see games like Uncharted........why not share how they were able to make that game (same with Insomniac)

PS3 1st party devs will always make desperate statements as to make the PS3 appear to have that "power that sets the console above the others" just over the horizon.. Its always just over the horizon for Sony. There will never be some magic piece of code that unlocks the horribly developer unfriendly hardware architecture.

The problem with the Cell architecture is that even if a SPE-centric API is developed, the hardware is too specialized to efficiently process the code. The only thing a good API will do for the Cell is to make it EASIER to get the power out of it at the expense of efficiency. Companies are already doing this (look at all the multiplats that run better on the 360).

Well most of the graphically enhanced games such as Oblivion in the old days,Gta IV in the current days and Far Cry 2 upcoming,ALL run better on PS3.Note that FC2 devs have already stated that PS3 was better for their game,it suited them more(better aliasing and framerates aswell). All because of its CELL processor. So in the future the things are going to change.

My point is NOT at all to inflame the 360 owners. They have their advantage of price.Only 200$ for a 360 :).So you get what you pay for.

indeed it does. killzone 2 is seting iself up to fail big time because its basically become a sony propaganga vehicle. the more i see of it the less i think its way ahead of any other game graphically.

Sorry but the PS3 is just weak. It has a weak GPU, tiny amount of ram and an overhyped cpu. There is no power there unless you render really small environments. The same applies to the 360. They are both showing their age now. I know that's not what a lot of you want to hear but it's true.

So...does a game like Warhawk count as a "really small enviornment"? Or how about Halo 3? Or Far Cry 2?

No teuf I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying that it can only achieve outstanding visuals if the hardware is rendering small environments like heavy rain for example.

Warhawk - doesn't impress me with it's graphics

Halo 3 - Yes if it was displayed in a higher res than 640p

Farcry 2 - I'm not holding my breath for the console version

This just in:

Game developer says "Lol forget the PS3, let's just develop on the Wii to make some $$$ and gain fewer gray hairs in the process!"

You realize that they could unlock every last bit of that power, and there would still be affordable hardware out there right now which blows it out of the water, right?

The only thing about the PS3 that's "future-proof" is the Blu-Ray player, and that's only for movies. For games Blu-Ray is more of a joke with it's slow read times and occasional 15min install times.

When it comes down to it, the PC equivelent of the GPUs PS3 and 360 are both using cost only $50-70. Developers are running sub-720p and cutting down texture quality and draw distance and we're only 2yrs into the generation. It's interesting that they're using the Cell for post screen shaders, that would definitely open up the PS3 for cool looking games in the future, but 360 is able to do the same thing right on the GPU with 48(40?) shader processors and 10MB edram on die. So the PS3 is no more "future-proof" than the 360 or current PCs. imo.

I think the term "unlocking power" is kinda amateurish for a developer to be using. It's probably just the usual hype-speak, like "gears uses a third of the 360's power!" and the like.
