Killzone 2 will be powered by a deffered lighting and shader engine that boasts FULL dynamic shadows on EVERY object.

All the lighting is HDR based and itis MORE dynamic then even S.T.A.L.K.E.R's lighting

We have recently completed a research contract for Guerrilla, the developers of Killzone.Second Intension

Here's a preview of the technology they have created for Killzone.

AWESOME !

I have no doubt that Killzone will definitely be a looker in the graphics department. I reckon graphically Killzone is gonna set a benchmark for PS3 titles and show 3rd party developers what PS3 is trully capable of. Gameplay-wise Killzone won't disappoint either, I mean look at Sony's other titles GT and GOW. Did they disappoint gameplay-wise ? ofcourse not !

Sony has something to prove with this game. I personally think that it will be better than Halo 3 for me. (I will be getting both though :D )

Not to me, I actually enjoyed its Realistic war-style gameplay...not the fake stuff with INSANE jumps and stiff gun animations. Killzone plays like one would in a real battle...its what i like about the game.

If it does actually do that with the lighting then it will look amazing. I remember a game on PC that did something similar, Severance: Blade of Darkness (I think it was called)and I still think it looks great when it comes to lighting even years after it came out...

I don't get the word more Dynamic. STALKER has fully dynamic shadows, which means that every object casts a shadow onto anything, it is all calculated real time. It even does multiple light sources. Plus all shadows are soft. How can it get more Dynamic than that?

We've all heard sonys stories before and we all know how they spin everything yet alot've people here seem content to believe everything they hear about a game that no-one has heard ANYTHIN about for over 2 yrs, the smell of desperation is really overpowerin on this one.

Until i see the game with my own eyes completely killin every other game in the looks dept im gonna take this with a very large pinch of salt.

Has STALKER gotten a HUGE update since it came out or something? Cause I had the game completely maxed out with every little thing in the nvidia control panel turned to the highest and the game never looked like that. What did that person do to get the game to look like that?

Why is anyone excited over this game? Why is there so much hype over its graphics? Am I missing something here? This is the same developer that made Killzone 1 and that that terrible Vietnam game right.

Okay, here goes:

Forget HDR for a minute, and lets talk about lighting for a second. Back in the old days of real-time graphics with the fixed-function pipeline (think DX7/DX8 ), lights were very expensive. You had a hardware limit on how many lights you could have (usually around 8 or so) and you had to apply the lighting per-vertex to make it feasible. What was the solution? Pre-calculated lighting. When creating a map, the map-editor would do a bunch of off-line calculations to determine the lighting at various points, and would this lighting info would be stored in the form of textures. These light-map textures would then be blended with the map textures to create somewhat plausible "pre-baked" lighting. The downside of this is that a) it takes up memory and b) the lighting is static, it can't be changed. Dynamic objects won't look right since they can't use the pre-baked lighting, and you can't have a lot of lights moving around.

Okay now, fast forward to the DX9 era (2004 or so). With DX9, you're no longer stuck with the fixed-funciton pipeline or a set number of hardware lights. By using shaders, you can do lightiing however you want. The catch, however, is that for each light source you add you effectively need to draw everything again and blend it in (In BigO notation, your complexity for lighting would be O(N * L) where N is the number of objects, and L is the number of lights). It also means that for each light you have to determine which objects its affecting, so that you don't have a "re-draw everything" scenario. With these limitations you have some games (notably Half-Life 2) stick with pre-baked lighting for most part, with some dynamic lights thrown in. You also have some games (notably Doom3) that do all dynamic lighting, but with very few lights.

Now we're in the present times, where we have some power DX9 hardware and some newer DX10 hardware. These GPU's allows us to do a new fancy technique called deferred rendering (which Stalker and now KZ2 use). If you would like me to go in depth about how DR works I will, but for now I'll just say is that what happens is you do one pass where you render all geometry (objects), and then you do an extra, simple pass for each light. Your resulting complexity is effectively O(N + L), which means you can have tons (hundreds) of dynamic lights provided that they're small enough.
