Don't know that I've seen this here in SW but if old.... sue me. :P

Seems like good news that the software side of Kinect is continuing to be refined so what we have seen thus far could be dramatically improved by the time Kinect launches to the public.

Any thoughts ?

The Story.

---

Kinect dashboard navigation works while seated

We've been told before that the Xbox 360's Kinect would work when "an experience is developed with sitting in mind," but we hadn't had the opportunity to really test that. In a Gamescom meeting, where we saw the Kinect version of the Xbox dashboard, we tried out the menu system and movie controls to test its recognition of seated users:

  • Sitting in a chair: Definitely works.
  • Sitting on the floor: Works.
  • Reclining while facing the Kinect: Works.
  • Reclining with the Kinect at our side: We couldn't get this to work, but we've been told that it will by launch.
  • Using another human as a coffee table (should have taken photos!): Kinect recognized the person behind the human coffee table trying to control the movie.

According to Microsoft, Kinect was running on an improved version of the software used during E3 in June. The manufacturer is set to make further improvements before the camera's November debut.

hmmm, hurray? Does anyone realize this whole notion of buying Kinect to control movies and navigate menus is essentially paying $150 for a new controller? Seriously, does anyone care that you can sit now and use the menus........I thought Kinect was supposed to be about playing games?

i know people that are buying it solely for that because you know chances are their 360 controllers are going to be right there next to them where instead of holding your hand over something for a couple of seconds you can grab it and slide to where you want hit a button and there you go. Also whats hard about using one button to pause a movie. But its people money and i hope they enjoy kinect for all its worth, but microsoft knows how to market something as being revolutionary and people eat it up.

Seems like a waste of $150. Why should I buy that when no games appeal to me and a controller works just fine.

Kinect is coming off as a novelty more than anything. It's price puts is much more expensive as the PS3 Move and the Wii. The Wii has proven itself to beable to incorporate the motion controls well into some games while Sony is promising a lot of 1st party support with Move.

Microsoft shows off dancing games for the 360 while Sony shows off Killzone 3 with the Move controls. Personally, I think Sony has a major upper hand. Move isn't some "gaming revolution", it's really just Sony entrance into motion controls while still not forcing them down the throats of consumers and developers who just don't care about them. It's the better approach.

Two different approaches where MS is going after the casual crowd and just as you noted, that worked out very well for "N". That said, sure as a core gamer I want to see a few great working core games for Kinect but on the other hand, I really don't see myself using motion controls with such games and prefer the traditional 360 controller except for maybe a RTS or Golf / Tennis game ect.

As far as the novelty thing and price, yeah, "N" heard a bunch of talk like that as well in the first year Wii launched but again, it seems to have worked out well for them this gen.

well lets see, every time I see someone saying they are going to buy Kinect it's because "we can navigate menus with our hands". So far it has nothing to do with games, rightfully so after seeing what they have planned to launch with. I never said that is it's only use but from the way people talk about it.....it seems navigating menus is the only viable use.

I hear ya but if left up to only SW posters, core games then Wii would have been a miserable failure but it isn't and MS took note of that hence, the games are launching with Kinect ( 15 I think ) but alas, they may not appeal to us but sadly, we don't make up the entire gaming public.

The same sentiment that inspires smack talk regarding Kinect inspires smack talk on the Wii's shortcomings here in system wars. This makes sense, since neither device is squarely focused on the demographic represented here. But the Wii sold like gangbusters, so I'm not so sure the Kinect is doomed just yet. Personally, I like to have the ability to play games on most every platform, so I'm getting Kinect. (In fact, when I move in the near future, I will make sure I have ample space to use the thing... 13 feet squared.) If you have to stand up for the games, I don't care so long as it makes sense. So far, racing games are the only genre where the inability to sit would be a deal breaker. But I hate racing games anyway, so I don't really feel effected by this particular limitation.

In 2 months time they will be able to recognize you laying down on your side, bottomline is that you can see how Kinect is going to grow, imagine Kinect in 3 years. People are naive to believe that Kinect wont grow and be built upon.

I don't think it looks too bad for a demo but even the most in shape workout demons aren't going to want to play football like that for 20+ minutes a game!

fail, any way you buy move its still costs more then kinect. incase you didnt know ign did a preview a few months ago about move and what you need to know about it. theres info like.. some games need 1 move, some need 1 move +a sub controller, some need 2 move controllers. and that just for one player. also move controllers take batteries. and gamestop is selling charge staitions for 40 bucks. move will be very costly for families. much more then even a kinect 4 gig 360 bundle will cost......
