Kinect will aid local tournament play with fighting game Killer Instinct, Microsoft has said.

At the Evo 2013 fighting game tournament in Las Vegas, Microsoft Studios creative director Adam Isgreen (via IGN) said Xbox One, which must be connected to Kinect to work, will smooth out the process of setting up tournaments both online and offline.

Killer Instinct will use Kinect to automatically detect who's playing and load their settings - even during a match, Isgreen explained.

"We want to have features to set up tournaments with your friends," he said.

"Say there are eight of you and you just start sitting down. I know a lot of people are like, ah, the Kinect camera in the room, I'm scared! But the coolness of being able to sit down, the controller pairs itself to you when you pick it up. It knows your buttons. It knows how you like to play. It knows what characters you want to play.

"You can just say Start, and go. It knows who you are in the tournament bracket, so it will just automatically do the matches correctly."

He added: "If you have a character you love, it might primary select that character already. Your buttons are already configured based on you picking up that controller. It knows it's you, so it can do the leaderboards correctly. All that's possible on Xbox One - mid-fight, too.

"So, here, you play, you give me your controller, it reconfigures it to me.

yea i saw this video earlier as well and all i can say is "wow".. if more developers use the Kinect 2.0 in practical ways like this, "better with Kinect" may actually become a true statement rather than just a catchy phrase to use in commercials..

this is a testiment to what's possible when you pack hardware along with every console instead of making it an afterthought add-on.. its also a testiment to how much more powerful the Kinect 2.0 is in comparison to the original Kinect.. good stuff..

Would love this feature for Halo 4.

Every time I play Halo 4 I've got to set up all my loadouts again, button configs, armor, tag, icon... Would love if it just knew who was playing, and immediately switched for the player.

Its like the Wii U tablet controller... There are ways to put it to good use, but its never significant enough to make it worth it.

It seems somewhat unlikely. The game doesn't seem too tournament viable, but then again injustice and Marvel  vs capcom 3 were present this year... It comes down to popularity essentially. How big will the hardcore Killer Instinct fanbase be come next Evo?

I don't think that the Kinect gameplay related functions are weird.

But all these overwatch features like "Kinect knows you", "Kinect adapts the game to you", "Kinect understands your playstyle, maybe better than you do" and "Kinect knows your friends and where they live" (ok, this last one is just a joke) sound creepy after all the known controversy...

Or they could just have it so your name is in the bracket and when it is your turn, it loads your settings and it saves me from having to deal with Kinect at all so they can then remove it from the box and bring the price down.

I just don't get it though. The whole game seems to follow this pattern

-footsies

-someone gets hit and comboed untill that character dies

-the next character comes out and if he gets hit by a mix up, he will also get comboed to death

-rince and repeat.
