[QUOTE="aliasfreak"]That is a shame. I agree, it doesn't really reinvent the JRPG, but I'm glad. I don't want something new out of this, I want a fun game that is structured in theway that I have grown to love. I bought it Friday and can't stop playing it.Supafly1
Why re-invent when it's not broken?
Yes. The formula is not broken. But there is a reason sometimes why games like Blue Dragon aren't popular in the state. Final Fantasy has always been the acception. It's always had the big budgest. To a degree is does carry a traditional Japanese style seen in roleplaying games. But even so, the game has always been targeted to a international group of gamers. It can afford to have a dynamic presentation; and that's just not in the field map. You look at the battle system and it has all these dramatic camera angles that make the character's actions look epic. The storylines are always grade A, and with each game there is a unique twist to the gameplay that keeps players intrigued.
I had my fun with a lot of Japanese RPGs in the late 90s. Those years the west and east were bridging a gap; and all these roleplay gaming were coming out of Japan. THAT WAS COOL. Now I honestly do not believe you need open-ended gameplay to make a RPG successful in North America or Europe. The formula may not be broken. But you would assume that since a lot of these Japanese developers who have designed these linear based RPGs for so long would, theybe able to create a title that can compete in the Western market. I've played cult-classic, and hidden gems before(and to much in this genre)-- that's what Blue Dragon will become. Those type of games are really niched based, and RPG fans are satisfied with what it delivers.
I just got a Xbox 360 and I plan to get this game mainly because it was a Sakaguchi project. I'm still amazed that the critics here in west do not like it. And that'sunusual considering it's from a man who is the Godfather of Final Fantasy. So I don't think there any excuse then. It honestly doesn't matter of you're a Xbox 360 owner and like FPS's alot. Because I love roleplaying games, but the Blue Dragon demo didn't really appeal. And hopefully that might changed this week. :P
