Held within the highly anticipated reams of Diablo III code will be an Auction House, wherein players will be able to auction off their wares for real-life coin.

A report submitted to the Korean National Assembly has put forth the idea that such behaviour is equivalent to dirty, dirty gambling due to the nature of random loot drops. As a result, the standards set out in Korea by Article 1 of the Gaming Industry Promotion Law in July aren't met by Diablo III's Auction House. The consequences of this are far-reaching, but hit Diablo III during its development.

The media in Korea have apparently taken this as a move against Blizzard, but the Korean Gamers Rating Board have countered this with the fact that all games will be coming under the same scrutiny.

Good, I'm not a fan of the system and I hope this makes Blizzard reconsider it.

Yep... because it's totally like gambling. Anyone that has played Diablo and Diablo II knows that there were sites all over the place selling loot for real cash. And there are still plenty of them up. Blizzard knows the same thing would happen with Diablo III so instead of rejecting something that would inevitably happen, Blizzard has decided to make it a legitimate part of the game instead of some shady dealings that can potentially rip-off a lot of people.

It's true, Korea has been on the watch list for WoW accounts for sometime. Suspect accounts are normally banned fairly quickly.

Korea is a huge market for Blizz games, even when they don't have the ''craft'' in their name. Maybe this will make Blizz reconsider the system, which, together with the DRM crap has turned many people off the game.

100% profit or nothing - Korea's Motto. Seriously though, how could they say that and yet still think gold farming is perfectly fine.

The hell with that. The Diablo 3 beta has a ton of issues with connection. One hiccup is enough to DC you, and when you get DCed it doesn't tell you. The game just ceases to advance or let you interact with anything. A hiccup does that, and then you have to exit and relog. Seriously always online DLC is completely stupid for a single player game. Make seperate profiles for offline and online, that way you have the freakin' choice without having to deal with this BS.

Sucks for Koreans if they don't get Diablo 3. I wonder if the blizzard fanboys will turn on them as quickly as they did the people screwed over by the online only DRM.

Honestly I cannot say I don't understand why this is happening because I do. I think auctioning items is a little dirty especially if their is an exploit

You can craft all the set armors in-game. If you put the effort in playing the game A LOT you won't need real money to get the best gear. The auction house is for those who are too lazy to want to play the game. :)

I find it kinda funny; these people will buy Diablo 3, a game heavily based around finding loot for $60 and then spend more money to play it less!

Gambling assumes there is a chance to lose money, how can you lose money if you don't win an auction?

They aren't saying that the Auction House is necessarily similar to gambling, they're actually saying that the effect it has is just as bad as gambling.

i think this has to do more with the fact that it removes some of korea's gold farming business.

Personally i think blizzard was smart with this feature because it basically puts the selling of items for real life money in blizzard's hand instead of some 3rd party possibley unsafe business. If people are going to do it anyways, might as well include the feature in the game and make it a ton safer. Not to mention that blizzard gets a little money off this feature sine people have to pay a fee to list the item whether it sells or not.

I think people underestimate the huge effect this will have on the game's community, endgame, and economy.

Rofl.. It's nothing like gambling. Also, if you think real money wasn't involved in Diablo II then you need a serious reality check. People are going to buy items with real money even if Blizzard didn't implement this. I would rather Blizzard use this system than see people get hacked by third-party merchants.

You risk time for cash reward. It's really not that hard to see why Korea views it this way. There's a little more to the situation than being able to buy items for money.

Either way you look at it, it makes no sense. People play for loot. They bought the game and don't know what loot they will get out of it. That's gambling?
When I had a job I got threatened every day that I might end up fired directly if something were to go wrong. That was a gamble for money?
You know, I thought a gamble meant you could lose something. Is that even applicable to the auction houses?

It has more to do with the addictive elements behind gambling. The best loot will be high level boss runs done by 4+ player parties, where loot will be gambled over (probably by dice rolling).

View it this way: Korea is trying to protect its citizens from being enslaved by a videogame. Obviously with Starcraft 2 - it's bad enough - but with the addition of Diablo 3, they have no chance. If every Korean figured they'll be making money from playing a Blizzard game, what else do you think they're going to do?

Makes sense. What korean think as "gambling" is the fact that when you want to sell an item you pay a fee just to make the auction. That means you can end up NOT selling the item but still lose money. So in a way you gambling / cross fingers even to sell the item so not end up with a loss.... and here is the "Gamble".

Buying items for Diablo 2 made game a BOT/Hacking festival and ruined the legit gamers. Period.... Because lets not forget Diablo 2 had major economy and trading .. After the mass duping/hacking/botting in order to earn real $$ for items ...Diablo 2 became fan to play but way , waaaay "BAD" for legit gamers.

So now what blizzard is doin? Instead of fight VS those sites and third party developing in order game be as much as hack free and fair for everyone , in Diablo 3 they introduce a way to legitimize boting/duping/hacking. With the difference that the previously "utterly bad" sites now transformed to a multimillion profitable microtransation for Blizzard , called Real.Money.Auction.House --> RMAH.

And quote me , in a year after Diablos 3 release will be a BOT/DUPE/HACK festival. Quote me for further discussion if you want

It's just an egotistical rant about why they think Diablo III shouldn't have a RMAH even though a lot of players used real money for items in Diablo II. It's completely hypocritical considering Korea pays money to professional Starcraft players, something they've done for well over a decade.

Then sorry but you didnt play diablo when 1.10 first release... Buying items since launch? Tell me 1 site that were selling items in 2001 around. Do you want me to tell you bot name also? I will if you want... How many were using maphacks into diablo 2 in general and prion to 1.10. 8/10 or more . Whys that? To fasten their possibilities for loot. Now imagine WHAT will happen in Diablo 3 when money gets involved. Just imagine that for a minute... Then we debate again.

People were buying items in Diablo since launch and botting didn't become massively popular until after WoW's first year.

Ebay using Paypal. I never said anything about maphack. I retract my bot statement because I remember channel bots and even price-check bots now. Hey, at least I'm willing to admit to it. :P

Blizzard has learned a lot from World of Warcraft and time will tell regarding the security of Diablo III.
