Lair is a dragon-riding title that incorporates high-flying acrobatics and immense environments with spectacular dragon duels and vast battling armies to bring you one of the most anticipated games for PlayStation 3.

The two groups within Lair's epic story, the Asylians and the Mokai, split many generations ago due to different interpretations of god. Both left their place of origin and settled at opposite ends of their vast land. In the game's present time, the world is on the brink of starvation due to shortages of both food and water (due to an epidemic similar to current day global warming). Volcanic activity has ravaged both sides (especially the Mokai's land) and a massive war breaks out due to the Mokai's desperation. As Rohn, the ace flier in a squadron of "burners," you must be the hero of the Assyrian military.

Lair is probably the most graphically impressive console title since Gears of War. The dragons (made up of seven layers of modeling) are fearsome and awing. The 32 x 32 kilometer environments will span from places like stormy seas to high mountainous peaks, with intelligent armies consisting of tens of thousands of soldiers. Possibly the most impressive aspect of Lair is it's overall sense of scale. The environments (especially the hypnotically beautiful water) and soldiers look equally as impressive from the distance of a kilometer in the sky to a mere meter away.

The team at Factor 5 worked heavily to include proper Sixaxis motion control within Lair. This isn't a gimmicky "shake your controller when event A happens" either. Lair's entire gameplay system revolves around the use of motion sensing. You'll control the dragon during flight by tilting the controller up to go up, left to go left, and so on. Other motions have been mapped to the controller as well. Simply pull back the controller during flight to perform a 180 degree aerial maneuver, or thrust the controller to the sideways to bash into another dragon. The inclusion of this control scheme was meant to be a natural experience, so it should be simple to understand as soon as you pick up the controller, or at least after spending a little time with the game. Factor 5 wanted to be sure that Sixaxis tilt controls felt natural and were implemented effectively, and it was for this reason that they removed motion sensing for ground combat, instead replacing it with the more responsive analog stick.

If you're still skeptical about the whole experience, we recently confirmed Lair's demo for PSN in our interview with Factor 5's co-founder and president, Julian Eggebrecht, so you'll be able to give it a test run before purchasing it. Get ready to breathe fire, destroy cities, and if you so desire, chomp on some soldiers, when Lair hits the PS3 this July.

Yes I've been astonished by how intelligent the armies in Lair appear to be. They seem to have some kind of genius level intellect that marches them right into the dragon's claws. Its a true battle of wits. More like a chess match than anything...

Yeah it is probably the most impressive, but still doesn't match GEARS

And it will be surpassed by upcoming games like Mass Effect, Bioshock, Halo3

Mkavanaugh77

Please leave Halo 3 out of this...we've seen that game already, Mass Effect doesn't look better than Lair. no comment on bioshock, haven't seen enough screens.

360 cant even run the games ps3 can on the same scale at such high graphical output. 360 should stick to what it does best coridoor to coridoor first person shooters.

Really? I have yet to see a single game looking better than GeOW or close to it. Lair looks subpar itself. Textures are subpar. All I see going for it is water effects. maybe im spoiled primarily being a pc gamer but I don't have to brainwash myself to justify a $600 paperweight purchase.

Only that close up and in 720p it has laughable textures and shaders, low resolution in both too, and mountains textures and shaders look like garbage comparing to Kameo

I have been through this again, the game is good in ereas, terrible in other ones, Kameo kills it in graphics, but Lair kills it in scale, and the game has still a bit to be released, so IT MIGHT get better, but i wouldnot hold my breath, maybe Lair 2 is indeed what this thread suggests

Article says

"with intelligent armies consisting of tens of thousands of soldiers. Possibly the most impressive aspect of Lair is it's overall sense of scale. The environments (especially the hypnotically beautiful water) and soldiers look equally as impressive from the distance of a kilometer in the sky to a mere meter away."

now, it is ok to hype things, but only when they are there to hype

- I agree with the scale comment, and the water looks amazing too, not as ood as Kameo but amazing anyway

- soldiers look equally impressive from the distance ?  Look at the below pic, how am i supposed to see same detail on soldiers from the distance EXCACTLY ?

- tens of thousands of soldiers ? I can count about 2000 in that battle that could be one of the most intensive, and of course the LOD is laughable, they look really blurry, like little spots on the ground actually, and FAR from impressive at all

Now those dragons in the distance in kameo, even in this blurry pic, seem 10 more detailed and in the actual game there are far more on screen at once, and you can zoom to them too, now THAT is impressive

Another not, rock textures on kameo

As for Mass Effect looking worst ...

Do you not get it? 360 has the 512mb and unified shaders so nothing on the PS3 will ever match Gears until the 360 surpasses it...so, once Mass Effect comes out, then the PS3 is allowed to look better then Gears.

Mass Effect does look better than lair, and its a possibility that halo 3 could look better, maybe not in beta mp but in the final build on single player if it looks how bungie says its gonna look then it will also look better than lair, i also think dirt looks more impressive than lair.

Does the scale of the game really make it a sort of factor of graphics in a game? Yes Gears is a sort of closed corridor type game. And looks mighty fine. But when you widen the scale of the game like Lair does...eh. I dunno. I don't know why people doubt that Lair is going to be a great fun game. It'll be Rogue Squadron all over again wtih dragons. And Rogue Squadron rocked. And does Greg Splicer have like a cut and paste with his silly Kameo comparison? Kameo is just an overfilled blur and blend. And the game just plain plays like poop. The demo alone said enough for me not to puchase the game.

Are you trying to say lair matches the level of detail found in gears? alot more is going on in lair and it has much bigger environments but to say it has more detailed models, higher res textures (Basically better graphics) then gears is wrong.

As for Mass Effect looking worst ...

greg_splicer

again man stop with the alpha screenshots. everything in lair is run in REALTIME. and stop with the comparisons to kameo dude. the game doesnt even come close to comparions with lair.

[QUOTE="Kahuna_1"]Wow greg, it is like you have everything setup once somebody says a PS3 games looks good to show bad pictures crushing it...you need to relax...oh and rocks are not shiny since you are such a graphics whore I thought I should tell you that, they may look nice, but not real.greg_splicer

Those are the latest greatest Lair pics, those excact pics PS3 fanboys use to say Lair is an impressive looking game, IF you habe better NEW pics, post them, i never stoped you, right ?????

It doesnt matter if they are new pics, they are still bad pics like all the Halo 3 pics...

Please leave Halo 3 out of this...we've seen that game already, Mass Effect doesn't look better than Lair. no comment on bioshock, haven't seen enough screens.

DoctorBunny

Oh, but it does :|

no it doesnt. i also dont see mass effect with 32km areas with 25k enemies on screen. 360 doesnt have the power to run this game.

Theres the fanboyish comments we were looking for. Area size now means good graphics? Lair looks good in a few area's but horrible in many.

360 cant even run the games ps3 can on the same scale at such high graphical output. 360 should stick to what it does best coridoor to coridoor first person shooters.

Really? I have yet to see a single game looking better than GeOW or close to it. Lair looks subpar itself. Textures are subpar. All I see going for it is water effects. maybe im spoiled primarily being a pc gamer but I don't have to brainwash myself to justify a $600 paperweight purchase.

yeah lair does not look that good cows are desperate and this guy says that its on a larger scale since when does that make something look better i dont care how bug it is

The demo alone said enough for me not to puchase the game. hotdaisy18

i thought the demo rocked.I thoguht it was fun throwing the ogre ppl on the spikey snowman's back..awesome fun

And i thought Lair did not run in REALTIME, thanks for reminding me, too bad that Kameo does not run in REALTIME !!!

Also the game is about to release, alpha is many months before, not just before going gold, right ?

And yes Kameo is above Lair, FAR above in most cases, see the pics above, and be owned

Here is a pic i took from a post above, that says those are thelatest Lair pics, are you sure those look .. better ?

BioWare's already explained why those pics look horrid, and they complemented their fans with this pic:

That Mass Efect pic was taken from a totally unfinished new level they were still working on ,the others from FINISHED levels

The Lair pics were taken from final game trailer, not unfinished levels, and the game is about to release, Mass Effect dos not have a release date, September is listed, but they will take as long as they want to make it look like those pics everywhere

Did you even read my post above? BioWare has explained why the screens looked that horrid, they complemented by showing a screenshot that looked quite a few times better.

Really now? I just headed over to the website those are hosted at and those ARE NOT the latest screens released there. Its actually going down the list, not even the top 5 screens on there. you are self owned. heres the newest on there
