For everyone who is saying this is 2d. Would you consider games like golden axe, crash bandicoot, simpsons arcade game, and other games 2d? Because you could move up and down the enviroment, jump, and move in a similar way to every 3d game, except there are set boundaries.

I would class it as a 3d game with 2D side scrolling roots.

Dunno about the background, but everything else seems to be 3d in LBP.

well if its on a 2d plane then it is a 2d game, a side scroller if u will. it has 3d graphics tho, u need to specify if it is a 2d platformer or a 3d graphics games. LBP is a 2d platformer if u are talking gameplay...like mario on the ds and wii, as well with cloning clyde on the xbl arcade and many more games that are graphically 3d but play on a 2d plane.

yeah graphically 3d, gameplay wise 2d. u can't move in all directions, just up down and side to side, so it is 2d.

That is simple. IT is 2d. Think of this. If you draw the X and Y axis, you can move any point left and right. Background gives a feeling of depth but all you do is move left, right up, down. That is 2d.

If they were 3d, characters could move up, down, left right, forward and backward.

Except that is your perspective... It has a camera as if you are, let me say on the middle sideline of a sports arena. when the person jumps, it appears as if he is on a different x and y (which is represented in lbp on the z axis). Becaise the camera is at the side, instead of pointing behind/front of the character, it makes the enviroment appear 2d, when it is actually 3d. And as the person mentions, about the z axis. The z axis is the depth of the playing area. the x axis is the width, while the y axis can, it seems, only the character to be in.

does that make donkey kong country 3d?

The models are modeled in the 3d. The gameplay is 2d. I really fail to see why your having such problems with this.

Its just like New Super Mario Bros for the NDS.

The game tries to make an illusion of 3d picture, but it is really 2d. It is like saying that Double dragon for NES is 3d.

What you are talking about is interpreting axis, but heck, interpreting axis and those, existing, is one completely different thing. If those games were really 3d, then the character could make a difference between moving up to the screen (north, or X axis) and jumping (moving within Z axis) but that doesn't happen.

Eh, you could move up and down the z axis. And move left, and right.

If you notice there is a z axis. Except it isn't huge. :(.

That is why I'm hyping this game, because any platformer can be virtually made on this game. So much possibilities, so awesome :o... Time to make a SOTC collosus, or possibly anything else...
