Summary:

Microsofts plans for the Xbox brand and the next console, in a 2010 document.

Xbox will no longer be just a gaming platform, but a full on media hub.

"Microsoft's five-year plan for the evolution of Xbox is hugely ambitious, signalling the company's intent to take over the living room, and the entire household, with a box that does it all. The Xbox 720, as the 2010 document calls it, will play games, apps, and video, not just on the big screen but any screen in the house. It will come with an improved Kinect sensor, and native 3D output; it will support AR glasses by 2014, and cloud streaming of games the following year."

Another source also says:

"Microsoft's Xbox 360 successor will be released for $299 in 2013, will feature an upgraded Kinect, be backwards compatible, and support cloud streaming of games by 2015, according to a leaked internal document from 2010."

That's an aggressive price, and it all sounds real good. Nintendo domination? Don't think so. Sounds like the competition will be tough

Nope, not at all, just the details of what the next Xbox will have.

lol is all I will say. With a price tag of $300 it'll be nothing more, but an upgraded Wii-U. More kinect, media hub and no mentioning of what this cloud gaming will be (it could easily just be Xbox 360 games/XBLA) and a relatively low price tag?

It's either fake or MS will continue on the path they're already on (Halo/Gears/Fable/Forza) + Kinect titles.

Why does this have to be posted again? Even if it was the right info when this stuff was written it is probably out of date ideas anyways.

*sighs* Another pointless rumour.

With that price, it's not going to be any good. Short lifecycle confirmed.

You don't just dump a plan just like that. Consoles aren't just made on the moment. The companies plan out their future and everything. There was a point posting this, and I'm pretty sure this exact info hasn't been posted before.

It's hardly dated, it's an insight into the brands way of thinking.

$300 dollars at launch? Have you read the spec sheet? The only way thats happening is if they are going to take a massive loss( which I doubt) or they will require a contract like a cell phone.

Well, that pretty much confirms that nextbox will suck. They are making a console that doesn't focus on games.

It will be exactly like 360 is right now.Halo gears forza, dumb apps, and kinect.

Funny thing is,the PC can do all this media crap better than the 720 will ever be able to.

300 with a Kinect sensor? Hmmmm... not that the Kinect is really that expensive of technology by now I bet but hope this doesn't bring down the specs.

Maybe you won't but I got my ps3 for the blu-ray and linux support and it made a decent media box on the cheap. If the 720 has all that and games then it will be a magor player because most people are too lazy to make a media server for their homes.

2010...rofl. Economic climates change. Technology and the costs associated with it change. Products do better or worse than expectations over time leading to changes in strategy. Things companies think will happen do not come to pass. etc, etc, etc Take it for what it's worth...a 'guide/idea' laid out in 2010 and nothing more. Can it help shed some light on their thinking 2 years ago? Absolutely. Does it mean this is indicative of their plans now, for next year (3 years later), or for 2015 (5 years later)? Probably not, as only a fool would not adapt to 2 more years worth of data/change

You can question details like release date, price etc in the article but its fairly clear MS are going that direction of having it as a media hub by looking at it in the last few years

ZombeGoast

Nintendo just going to get left behind and that is sad but just like atari,sega,3do,turbo graphix,neo-geo ect go big or go home. Nintendo got some games but clearly the bar has been raised. When you got one console that just plays games and the rest do so much more then the choice is get the one that does more. Kinda like when you go car shopping 1/2 the crap on there you don't really care about but if two cars of similar quality are on sale but one has all the extras the you get the one with the extras.

This might be the last gen of nintendo consoles and the little kid in my is sad about that. The adult in me knows the value of a dollar so I got to go with best system not the one with a couple games I like. This whole problem is due to the leadership of nintendo not changing so they still thinking 80's not 21st century. Sony and MS are trying to take over the living room period. Also sony is trying to use the vita to take portable media/gaming to the next level. Nintendo is still in the sell a couple million 1st party games and screw the rest.

Bet nintendo is kicking themselves for turning down that sony cd tech now. The gaming market is huge. Just on pc they killed all other forms of media in money earned and people are starting to do streaming media on their pc's alot. So no wonder ms wants a part of that. The 720 is going to sell millions of units and all the people will buy games and they can get movies/music/tv/dlc/themes ect you name it. It has the potential to make a ton of meney. Sony also sees it they have a huge music/movie collection and plus is only the start. Soon you will come home and say xbox ufc fight and it will order it and play or dvr it. You will say ps3 play Top Shot and the TV show will come on.

The future is here and nintendo is getting left in the dust.

It's just an outline on what direction the company wants to go..on this scale it takes years of planing to moveforward...a project has to have some goals/vision on where they want to be..this is only that..we will see if they meet them..or better... exceeds them..

Sounds like the competition will be tough

lol is all I will say.

This lol Casual Kinect box, DO NOT WANT.

1# first of all we dont know jack about the hardware ..

2# and improved kinect whats bad about, if its better than todays kinect and it works better i take it..

3#bc is a good thing, im pretty sure no one will complain about that ..

4#cloud gaming is the future of gaming if you like or not , that or digital..

5#and 300 bucks for something better than todays consoles you really cant complain about guys.. i mean seriously..

its the future to intergrate youre "consoles" within your living room etc etc.. also its only a rumour..

and btw if we go for rumours etc, the wiiu didnt look too good either, but seems it turns out be pretty good actually.. and by that logic ps4's rumour isnt looking to good either.. (mostly directed to hardmicro)

So basically its a 360 with a MS version of onlive. I predicted this. Cloud is a decent alternative to console gaming.DaBrainz

Ypu predicted this by a rumour wow..

Cloud gaming is decent ? it really not out there yet ? not many providers yet.. imo i think its the future of gaming. tho with some kind of support for discs/digital, if net speed isnt fast enough..

Like the articles and the OP says, this is from 2010, meaning things have changed. Who knows if that roadmap will hold up still or if it was a bit too ambitious at the time. However, as this thread seems to focus on the general and not the specs, I will just say I doubt the $300 pricepoint will hold true. From what it sounds, Microsoft has modified and upgraded the initial targets, so I have a hard time seeing a $300 console. The only way I could possibly see that pricepoint is if they offered a bare-bones SKU, but I think speculating over something like that is a bit too premature at the moment.

Doesn't sound like it would be all that powerful then, it would just Xbox 360.5

Basically a slight upgrade in hardware and power but focus mostly on being a media center. Basically the next Xbox wouldn't be a "game system" at it's core, it would be a "media system" at heart with games as an addition. This is even more evident in lack of power if they are going to be doing full BC, which means same architecture.

But these are all rumors at this point, we don't really know anything.

This thread is weaksauce compared to the ones we spent all weekend talking about. You know, the other threads that discussed every single issue/question raised in this thread from multiple points of view and analyzed every piece of info in the original 56 page source presentation. Yah, if only we still had access to those discussions....hmmmm.

This is ancient news by GS standards.

Doubt it. I'm gonna side with pacther on this one and say MS will have cable companies subsudize it and make it more of a cable box. Do you see all the damn apps now?

This thread just proves how none of you read anything. This information is new, if you actually bothered to read rather than just skim through and check sources there is some new information here. The price, backwards compatibility and some other stuff are all new.

Why should the fact that it's gaming console limit what the Xbox could be? The new Xbox seems like a great experience, and is integrated with everything. If it's successful, it'll be the go to media hub. Sounds fantastic, as long as the games aren't compromised.
