I love the game so far, but I do have some complaints that I believe are legit. I'm not bashing the game, but at the same time I question if it deserved the perfect 10.

-Weaker soundtrack. While its still awesome with artists like The Who, Smashing Pumpkins, and Kanye West, its definitely a dissapointment after San Andreas. San Andreas had artists such as Rage Against the Machine, Guns n Roses, 2 Pac, Tom Petty, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and more.

-Cover system is a little wonkey. Its a great feature to the game, but its a little clumsy and doesn't match up with other next-gen shooters (Gears, GRAW, etc.)

-Sometimes lacks mission variety. This has always been an issue with GTA, but you'd think they would implement more diverse missions in this iteration. Too many fetch missions IMO.

-Multiplayer isn't anything special. Granted, I haven't played every single mode yet, the multiplayer just seems like mindless mayhem. Not that its a bad thing, but everyone is just shooting the first person they see with no strategy involved and the lock-on aiming system doesn't require much skill.

Those are my complaints, otherwise a fantastic game.

I love the cover system. Once you get used to it it works great.

Also, the soundtrack rocks.

except it is perfect....Whenever you have any thing of a scale and you reach the maximum of that scale then it means the zenith, the most, the top...ect

which is why sites that use grades are much better now, because the number system still dictates that if you get the maximum number then its the top, its the zenith, the most....perfect.

I definitely agree about the cover system and lack of mission variety. As far as other complaints go, I find the whole phone-based relationship thing a little annoying at times, like when you have to drop everything you're doing and drive across the city to go bowling with Roman, just so you won't lose reputation points. This is pretty minor, but every now and then the camera seems a little hard to control, especially in helicopters. I also miss owning businesses and other money-making properties, although I can see how they wouldn't fit into this game. Additional weapons couldn't have hurt either, only two of each type seems a little lacking. This is nitpicking, but the instant re-try option after failing a mission would be more useful if checkpoint-based for longer missions. That's not much of a problem though, since the game is pretty easy (arguably too easy at times). Now this one is really nitpicking, but it seems like the guys at Rockstar North included a lot of British expressions that seem out of context in the American setting (like "proper", "bloody", etc.).

Of course, all of these complaints are heavily outweighed by the game's improvements to the combat system and core gameplay, and the game is most certainly excellent.

It needs some car customizations, something to buy with all that darn money we earn (cars, homes, furnishings for the home) This is why i think Saints Row 2 will be more FUN than GTA IV, but will lack the story and impact of it. They took the "GTA" out of GTA IV with this one. took out all the things that made it replayable!!:( just my opinion of course

I have several complaints too, many of which I share with the TC.

A 10 out of 10 on a rating scale is a perfect score though, whether it technically means perfect or not. Of course the game has it's flaws, and a 10 is defined as "a game that could be no better at the time of it's release" by Gamespot. There are several things that would lead me to believe it doesn't deserve the 10 GS gave it.

Auroni

If you read my post, you'd see that my complaints would prevent it from getting a 10. I'm saying its slightly over-rated, with reasoning to back it up.
The weak multiplayer alone should be enough to dock it off 0.5

i agree with you on the soundtrack and partly on the cover system. Haven't played the online yet so idk. I loved the soundtracks in VC and SA(especially SA). Also i sometimes can't make out the name of the radio station on GTAIV. Nothing really hits me like the past soundtracks. I guess its easier to have the game soundtrack based off of a era of time like VC and SA were. Its still a really great game but just it doesn't feel the same.

Nothing is theres no such thing as a perfect game as something can always be improved. A 10 simply means that the flaws are so minor that they are easily overlooked by how groundbreaking the game is.

That being said GTA SA>GTA4

The single player is perfect I'd say, soundtrack isn't that great but thats pure opinion. I just plug my iPod in and use my own music anyways.

But the multiplayer wow does that have problems. I think Rockstar made it without looking at any other online game ever made and made just about every basic mistake they could make. Its like they didn't even test the online to notice how wonky and unbalanced it is. Matchmaking is ridiculous, first off the mode selection is archaic and so is the lobby. Too much control is given to players in the lobby too. The team selection process should be automatic, every game I've ever been in 5 minutes was devoted to people changing their teams so there was completely unbalanced team situations 7 on 2 on 3 on 1 on 1 kind of stuff. So right off the bat the match is tipped in one teams favor. Then in the actual match all the game consists off is whoever gets to a power weapon first is going to control the game. If you have the M16 or RPG you win, your gonna kill everyone that comes at you. Plus the weapon spreads are unbalanced too. There will be nothing but handguns at your spawn but the next team has all Uzis, and the other team has all assault rifles etc. Rockstar should have put more effort into it and it would have been the best online game out there but they dropped the ball big time.

Even with the complaints I have with GTA IV, I really don't see how people can say it's worse than San Andreas. SA did little to improve the downright awful combat of the previous two games, and as a whole, the game's world felt life-less and bare. GTA IV has a combat system that is actually good, and a rich and immersive gameworld. This, combined with a well-done online multiplayer, make it far better than SA in my opinion.

Sorry kid, if you want me to reply you're going to have to write in English.

Good to see the smart asses aren't taking any breaks tonight.

Let me reiterate for those that can't comprehend implications of the English language:

A 10 is considered Prime. Prime does not equate to perfection on the Gamespot scoring scale, but rather it represents a game being as nearly perfect as possible. Since nothing is actually perfect, in English you refer to seemingly perfect things as "nearly perfect" or "most nearly perfect"

I think San Andreas is better then this one. Not saying that this one is bad, but it's kinda boring. This one this better options then San Andreas...like the cell phone and the computer in the police car.....and the rides in the cabs, but the missions are kinda weak. San Andreas's missions were funnier....even the side missions. I also thing that San Andreas's story and theme is a lot better.

IMO, San Andreas shold have gotten a 10.0 and GTA4 should have gotten a 9.4 or 9.6, or whatevea Gamespot gave it.

My gripes with GTA4

1. MP SUCKS

2.Starts off VERY VERY slow

3. Missions start to get a little to repetitive

4 Why cant I turn off the radio ???

5. Some of the pop in annoy me

But all and all GTA4 is an achivemet in sandbox like action/shooter games and deseves a 9 - 9.5 but most certainlynot a 10.

I have a list of complaints but the biggest complaint is it's unenjoyable. I guess I'll never get into the sandbox genre. The most fun I've ever had in a sandbox was looking for agility orbs in Crackdown.

GTA4 has the most diverse missions in the series imo. While a lot of them have the same base (drive here bla bla etc.) the WAY you do them, and the things inbetween are much more creative in GTA4.

I agree the cover system is iffy, but it works well enough that the game doesnt need to be penalized for it.

Just the fact that it HAS multiplayer, with all the modes and at 16 players, is enough to not get penalized at all for this portion.

As for the soundtrack, i never listened to GTA soundtracks that much personally. Some stuff is cool here and there. Michael Jackson, Snoop Dogg/Dr. Dre, Rakim (atleast i THINK he was in atleast one im not sure though), Tupac. GTA4 has a lot of good soul stuff on Vibe that I like. Other then that i've always kept the radio off, or listened to Chatterbox in the case of GTA3.

I looked it up to make sure and I was wrong:P Vice City doesn't have a Techno radio station, but the others have. SFUR in San andreas and Rise FM in GTA3.

I agree with GTAIV's soundtrack others have mentioned. I dont really like it. The tracklists in San Andreas and Vice City have way more classics and overall better songs imo

*EDIT*

Vice City:

  • Run DMC - Rock Box
  • Michael Jackson - Billie Jean
  • Hill & Oates - Out of Touch
  • INXS - Kiss the Dirt
  • Bryan Adams - Run to You
  • Yes - Owner of a Lonely Heart
  • The Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star
  • Lionel Richie - Running With the Night
  • The Pointer Sisters - Automatic
  • Michael Jackson - Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'
  • Kool & The Gang - Summer Madness
  • In Deep - Last Night A DJ Saved My Life
  • Twisted Sister - I Wanna Rock
  • Ozzy Osbourne - Bark At the Moon
  • Iron Maiden - 2 Minutes to Midnight
  • Judas Priest - You Got Another Think Coming
  • Foreigner - Waiting for a Girl Like You
  • Kate Bush - Wow
  • Mr. Mister - Broken Wings
  • Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Two Tribes
  • Blondie - Atomic
  • Nena - 99 Luftballons
  • Kim Wilde - Kids in america

San Andreas:

  • James Brown - Funky President
  • James Brown - The Payback
  • Public Enemy - Rebel Without A Pause
  • Heart - Barracuda
  • Kiss - Strutter
  • Joe Cocker - Woman To Woman
  • Rod Stewart - Young Turks
  • America - A Horse With No Name
  • David Bowie - Someone Up There Likes Me
  • Eddie Money - Two Tickets To Paradise
  • The Who - Eminence Front
  • Billy Idol - White Wedding
  • Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus
  • Guns N' Roses - Welcome To The Jungle
  • Ozzy Ozbourne - Hellraiser
  • Soundgarden - Rusty Cage
  • Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name
  • 2 Pac - I Don't Give A F***
  • Dr Dre - Nuthin' But A G Thang
  • Dr Dre - F*** Wit Dre Day
  • Dr Dre - Deep Cover
  • Kid Frost - La Raza
  • Cypress Hill - How I Could Just Kill A Man
  • Ice Cube - Check Yo Self
  • Easy E - Easy-Er Said Than Done

GTAIV did not top that imo and these are just the ones I like

IV's soundtrack really didn't tap into the wealth of available contemporary music. All Rockstar had to do was listen to the real radio for a few days, jot down some songs then buy the rights to them and it would have captured real radio stations perfectly. Everything they picked was crap, there is a few good artists but they didn't even pick their best songs or even popular songs.

I think of GTA:IV as kind of like GTA 3, it's on a new system so they've started out with the simple things. Im pretty sure we won't see GTA:V until there's at least one more using the GTA:IV engine just like how Vice City and San Andreas used the GTA 3 engine. So basically I think they'll make a Grand Theft Auto: (Insert Place) that will have pretty much what everyone wanted in GTA:IV like customizations and all that.

WHY did they add techno music? There will be times im doing a mission then wonder "WHAT THE FREAK AM I LISTENING TO" xTHExJUICEx

Because a TON of people like electronic music... Don't you know that? lol And as Killerfist said its been for a very long time.

-Graphics are the worst out of any of my ps3 games (uncharted, ninja gaiden, heavenly sword, cod4, resistance).

-Very little innovation from past games

-Soundtrack is mediocre

Its certainly fun, but I wouldnt give it above a 9.2.

A 10 isn't perfect.

Auroni

Still, he has legitment complaints, I dont see how big problems like these make a game "PRIME" either. 9.5 (9.8 IGN) would have been decent.

But isnt "PRIME" stating that it cant get better for its time, when it clearly could have been?

The problem is GameSpots rating system. Gamespot can't justify a 9.5, even with its flaws GTAIV is no way a 9.5 game. But with their great new rating system thats all they got. Truely this is a 9.8, 9.9 game. But Gamespots choices were either underrate the game or just go for the 10.

i think the game sucks and i am mad i wasted $60 bucks on it.

weak story, dumb missions, crappy controls, weak online(online actaully suffers from the horrible controls) and medicore graphics...

-Renegade

Renegade?? no way!! even after it was confirmed that the PS3 verson had less pop in then the 360 verson??...thus bein superior in a sense...or are you saying this now to justify DC when the 360 gets that DLC stuff??

sory to be supicious, but I have to ask :P

I found Scarface : The World is Yours much more innovative than this GTA..this just dosen't put anything new and interesting on the bowl after San Andreas.
