How can you think the PS3 will sell worse than the 360?  It's got its brand loyalty backing it up.

People may be buying a 360 without having an XBOX because they see that it has a solid game lineup right now (Gears of War, Mass Effect, Halo 3) but the fact of the matter remains, the casuals who determine the market will wait until the PS3 price drops.  Face it, casuals love their God of War, Grand Theft Auto's (backwards compatible on their PS3 from PS2), and Madden's.  Sony has all three of those wrapped up in a neat little package.  The next casual grabbing game is Motorstorm, that commercial tantalizes all casuals and they want to play it, thinking it is a Twisted Metal racing game without the guns.

Like it or not, casuals, not hardcore gamers determine the market of video games, and Sony has that wrapped up.

There's one thing standing in its way, the Wii...

Actually you're right. Many casuals are loyal to the playstation brand because of the ps2.  Many still believe that GTA is exclusive to the PS3, the PS3 is ten times more powerful then the xbox 360, and that the PS3 is the only console to get if they want next gen graphics.  How do I know this? Casuals have told me. It's sad the misinformation they have about consoles but there you go. The only reason they haven't gotten it yet is because they're waiting for the price drop.  Lems are counting the ps3 out way too early.

You're right. Casuals are waiting until the consoles become cheaper.

But think about it. PS2 sales perked up when the console hit $200. How long is it going to take for the PS3 to get to $200? How long will it take the 360?

Therein lies the advantage.

Says who? Things are getting pricier these days. The value of the dollar is decreasing. There are phones, Mp3 players, and cameras that all cost 600$ and yet plenty of people buy them.

this i probably ture, but i see that more and more people are planin to buy a 360. im not sayin that the 360 will outsell the ps3 but most people r thinking that the ps3 will much greater then it is. also the 360 is cheaper, and this is causing some people to switch to the 360 too. overall i dunno if the ps3 will win this gen but i do kno that if they do the gap between 1st and 2nd will be much smaller then last gen

So when casuals go to the store to buy GTA and they see it's for 360, what console are they buying? Oh that's right, the more expensive one, of course! :|

Yeah right, get a grip. 360 has GTA day one now, and it's always had Madden, so I don't know why you think casusals will buy a PS3 for these games when they can get it cheaper with a 360.

Are you trying to tell us that the strong point of the 360 is games and the strong point of the PS3 is brand loyalty, and that people are stupid enough to choose the latter over the former - and thus, the PS3 will win?

Once again, Sony came in, and Sony has a quality name among electronics (not just games, I never once said video-games brand loyalty only) and people went there instead.

If brand loyalty is the soul reason why the PS3 wins the console race, than why the hell should I (or anyone) want it?

Would you rather own the console that deserves to win the race based on what it is, or the console that will win based on brand loyalty from a previous generation?  Personally, I dont' care enough about sales to buy a ps3 just to be loyal.

I don't think the casuals have the whole what mindset.  Some of their friends have 360s and they've seen what it can do.  People talk about brand loyalty and all that, well casuals aren't loyal to Sony as they are to their games.  As long as Microsoft can get commercials out that make it clear that their games are available on the 360, it's Sony that has the problem.

Dude, I am a casual gamer. I joined this site because I was curious about the new consoles. After reading a bit into both systems I chose the 360. Now, I bought the PS2 used when it was 3 years old and love God of War. But, casuals like myself are not willing to pay $600 for that game alone. I play my 360 occasionally, so why did I buy it? Because I love to play games when I can fit it into my schedule and want the best experience for a decent price.....$600 is not it.

That's actually a good point, but theres another fatal flaw of Microsoft thinking an earlier pricedrop will help, casuals will want to play their old games on their new consoles.

I doubt it. If you have Madden 08, why do you need Madden 07? If you have GTA4, what are you going to do with GTA3? It's not needed anymore. It's old news. Sell the PS2, and get a new console. Sell the games, and get new ones.

If you don't spend a lot of hours playing games, you don't need to hang on to all your old ones, especially when there are shinier new ones available.

And the other console are just going to watch sony drop the price? The other consoles wont be the same price forever, and Sony is certainly not dropping the price this year, maybe not even next year. The point is once the PS3 is $500 (the other consoles may or may not be the same price), the casual gamers will have already jumped on another bandwagon

First, I'd like to say that "ThirstyChainsaw" is pretty much the coolest forum name I've ever seen on system wars.  If you are simply a gamer, then you know that the 360 is D-O-M-I-N-A-T-I-N-G right now!!!!  I have no loyalty to one console or another.  The 360 has the games and the nice online service right now, so they get just about all of my gaming budget until things change.

It won't be $600 forever, my friend.

That's where  you're off though, people will go from PS2 - PS3.  I doubt many casuals will buy a new system without BC.  It's why I bought a PS2 before a Gamecube.

Were the stars lined up just right when the PS/N64 switch took place?

PS was my first console.  Ever, besides GBC, but that don't count.

I don't really care about what made you switch. I care about what made the gaming public switch. So, what was it - will of the gods? Sony got their rain dance just right? Nintendo was just faking? Whatever it was, it clearly shows that the gaming public can and will switch sides if given the proper incentive.  Sony's certainly doing their best to provide said incentive this generation...

Nteks

Casuals aren't willing to drop $600 for a console.

Price Drop in the future. This is a long term War.

360 is going to have a price drop sooner than the PS3. IF it is this fall, casuals will jump all over it for GTA...I doubt a fall price drop though anyway.

Tell that to the SNES owners who didn't transition to N64 or Gamecube.

Once again, Sony came in, and Sony has a quality name among electronics (not just games, I never once said video-games brand loyalty only) and people went there instead.

And as things stand now, Microsoft has its own name in gaming, 1st in the PC market, and now built up with their console, which stands as formidable opposition to Sony's brand loyalty. Especially when Sony is losing exlusives to 360.

hahaha they lost there brand "loyalty" back at E3. a major company like sony can't base their entire business plan on, there loyal fan base. hahaha you fail. and p.s. never go into buiness. and casuals play the 360 or the wii, not the ps3. you fail on so many levels

Lems are counting the ps3 out way too early.youngtongue
so true. "lol teh ps3 am 3 times as powerful as 360!"

People can get GTA and Maddens on other consoles to.... well... one other. I wouldn't buy a PS3 just to play my old ps2 games, and GOW2 is on PS2 also. I don't need a PS3 for GOW. also all conosle GTA games are on Xbox and backwards compatable on 360. Also GTA 4 will be on 360. No one needs Sony for GTA. Same goes for Madden. GOW, GTA, and Madden are not reasons to buy a PS3.

That aside..... Motorstorm... God bless it's little heart, it tries so hard to be more than just another racing game, but thats all it is. Motorstorm is not a console seller.

hahaha so you expect all the casuals to wait 2-3 years for a major price drop? right... by that time they will own a 360 or a wii. your logic fails on just about every level.

Wow, games verus brand loyality, just wow. This is a sad day if there are people willing to jump just because of a name. You saying there isn't no other good companies than that of Sony, whether in gaming or not. It be like seeing two exacty shirts, one with a brand name tag, while the other vice versa, so you saying because its their brand name, it always going to be great. You saying casuals will wait till 600 dollars will drop, what if they already bought a system, whether it be a Wii or a 360, you think they going to just drop it or/and buy another. So the day it becomes 400 dollars, you think that others won't drop as well, a GTA is a GTA game to a casual whether it on one system or the another. Saying that, they would buy a system with a lower price tag. Does that multiplat-casual game matter which they play it on, as long as they get it, they will buy it and they will buy it with most put in for casual's buys. Casuals have no loyality to brand, only their type of games that on the most reasonable console for them.

"bu...bu...but the casuals" Casuals who already bought the Wii? Or the casuals who will buy a 360 when they hear that Grand Theft Auto 4 is on the 360, and hey that price cut 360 is only $300 while the $600 PS3 is the one that will be sitting on shelves come Christmas. Hmm... The DS and the PSP are only $70 apartment, yet look at which one is outselling the other 3-to-1. The DS was SOLD OUT at Christmas and parents still weren't picking up the PSP. The PS3 was on store shelves the day before Christmas - it should have been a hot item, the 360 was completely sold out that time the previous year, yet the PS3 was on store shelves all over town. Casuals aren't going to buy a $600 videogame console, not now, not ever. The PS3 is doomed because Sony screwed up the price, launched late, and is continuing to focus on the wrong things.
