A Sega console to experience what gaming is all about FUN.
No microtransactions/lootboxes, no dlc, no day one patches, no selling you costumes, no downloading onto a hard drive, plug n play.
If it's just one console I'd go with a wii. Nes, master system, snes, genesis, tg-16, neo geo, n64, GameCube, and wii all in one box. Granted it doesn't have the entire library of all those consoles and the n64 emulation is spotty at times, but if clutter drives you made like myself, then that is the box that you want.
System is less important as to having the right games to teach them to adapt to modern gaming mechanics. Halo and Gears are perfect entries for teaching people modern FPS and TPS, and they can do it with aid of experienced friends, in local split screen or online. These two I feel would be most ideal but not entirely necessary, but any game with solid mechanics and co-op.
I started my sons on classic NES and Snes games... Then moved them up from there.
Modern gaming is a watery fart compared to many of the classics and should not he missed. My sons had the same experience I had with the first Zelda, or kotor or punch out etc, because I didn't skip them ahead.

Oh yeah. My favorite consoles are Sega.

My one nephew started on NES that was when I was still new to Gamespot.
His brother wasn't really interested in games at all, though he likes some games on the N64 but he also plays PS4. His favorite games is Minecraft for some reason.
