Well, there are fanboys that say the Smash Bros is definetly indeed a skillful game for its secret skills that's all over the game and states this quote "Easy to learn, hard to master" and there is another side of others that think it is overall just mindless fun with no skill!!!

Although, the first game of Super Smash Bros in the N64 was more of a fun type of game, the GC title Melee took the game franchise to a whole new level of skills that most pro smash player as discorvered to be the best Smash player there is!!!

Here are some videos of tutorials on how to master individual SSBM characters with combos and saving yourself techniques made by different pro smash players:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=GCDsnCTmjoM

http://youtube.com/watch?v=Sx1rHcifg-o

http://youtube.com/watch?v=AfWzTPlIwyw

http://youtube.com/watch?v=ARJCfkIDCSc

And here is the overall guide video made by another pro smash player using advance techniques:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=f0jYbmsbY44

What do you guys think? After looking at these videos I say that it does take skill to play Super Smash Bros Melee, but not the first game!!!

SSBM always took some skill to play - I've seen some of the best smashers in the world at MLG events, and you can't tell me they're way beyond your typical smash player. Since I'm not a fighter guy myself, I have to say that more traditional fighters take more skill, because that's all I hear from fighter afectionados. All those people can't be wrong... can they?

Yes! Bottom Line. I own any, and all noobs at SB. Timing is the part of the game that is the hardest to master. That is the thing most noobs have no clue about!

I don't know, these pro smash players, must have played Melee since the launch of the game and took months and probrably years to master the games!!!

Indeed. Timing is the hardest part. Also knowing your opponent. If you're battling against Fox you shouldn't expect a slow opponent.

By all means. After a LOOONG time of playing with friends, I've seen moves pulled off that were more akin to a fluid dance than fighting, with the aggressor landing a series of hits after hits without having his opponent even hitting the freaking GROUND.

This topic didn't need to be made.

Anyone who thinks it doesn't take skill to be good at SSBM is either delusional or has never played the game with someone who is good. I guarantee you an unskilled player would get demolished by anyone who is good at the game (and no, I'm not talking about someone who "thinks" they are good, or "says" they are good. Someone who has actual skill).

I don't think anyone will say it doesn't take skill or isn't hard to master. However, if you were to try saying that it has as much depth or is as hard as some other fighters.....then we'd have a seriously dirty debate (It's been done before).

Oh yes, SSBM requires a great deal of skill.

I frequently play in SSBM tournaments with large groups of friends, and there is definitely a defined group of players there that are the best.

It isn't just a free for all.

It involves a lot of skill. Of course, there is some luck involved if the rules are not altered. For example, I've beaten an opponent nearly to death, only to have a heart container to drop right next to him and restore his health completely. Because of stuff like this, I tend to cut off some of the random items during mult-player. That way, the match relies more purely upon skill.

My friend and I take Melee to Youth Group every week. We aren't by any means pros at the game, but we utterly destroy everyone else. Smash takes a ton of skill to play right.

Smash Bros is one of the only games where you NEED skills to win.

Why does this topic come up again and again? Theoritically, If SSBM took absolutely no skill whatsoever, then a newbie to the game could beat someone who has played it everyday for the past 4 years. ALL FIGHTERS take some sort of skill. Why is SSBM always the target of this type of topic?

wow. I am a SSB fan, but you can not make that type of comparison. DOA and Soul Calibur takes way more skill and has way more depth than any SSB game period.

"Easy to learn, hard to master"

FireEmblem_Man

that's exactly it. i know people who are unbeatable with jigglypuff in smash melee. sure, the controls aren't as responsive as halo or a shooter, but it still takes a lot of skill and it is possible to master the smash

Yes it does.

I also think that BRAWL will be a cultural phenomenon and sell like crazy.

  1. It appeals to a broad range of gamers.
  2. It comes with all of Nintendo's top franchises included.
  3. It is fantastic value for money.
  4. SSBM sold more copies than Halo, and more copies than God Of War and God Of War 2 combined.

Just a few points:

1) most games require some form of skill otherwise they're basicallya waste of time, this is more a question of depth.

2) comparing SBM to the likes of Soul Calibur andDOA and calling them button mashers is absolutely RIDICULOUS!

just like good SBM players smack noobz around good Soul Calibur or DOA players hand out ownage for breakfast...

3) though i would say SBM takes skill i would say it lacks the depth of other fighters e.g. VF or Tekken or Street Fighter!

you know the one's where ppl stare at the screen looking for frames or whatever it is they do...

you can beat it on hard on the GC version with link just doing his basic Y,Y combo. I've done it. I lost 2 or 3 times, but I still did it. vs is better but you can still have some luck button mashing with the right characters.

I can destroy any one who is button mashing in SSB without any trouble.

I think you'll find that in most fighting games there're the notoriously easy to usecharacters e.g. Eddy in tekken and the harder ones e.g. Akira in VF so simply saying you can beat it on hard isn't a big deal if you chose an easy to use character...

besides playing against someone that's mastered every combo andcounter plus has tactics for different opponents in those games is more impressive than someone thats good in SBM imo...

SSBM players have to adjust their combos to how far the enemy flies, different weight of characters, and even make their own combos up instead of pre set ones.

I tire of these topics with any multiplayer title.

The skill required is directly proportional to that of your oppoents. Skilled opponents will require skill, and vice versa.

No, not compared to other fighting games.

SSBM takes skill to play well but it's shallow compared to VF, DOA and Tekken.

So u think Virtua Fighter serie with a playerbase of 2 grandpas and 5 wannabehardcore gamers is more competitive then SSBM?

VF could require more skill, but it lacks the healthy/extreme competition that SSBM has.

I come back this thread and I find you already saying that it's not skillful as VF, DOA, and Tekken??? Look at those videos and you think those aren't deep as a regular fighting game???
