I dunno who has or hasn't gotten the chance to play Shenmue 3 but I just got it a couple of days ago. And I'm actually loving it so far! It looks, sounds and feels just like the original games and it takes advantage of the modern technology used to make it.

*Now it doesn't stop to load every time you enter a building or new area.

*You can eat to heal yourself.

*You can change Ryo's clothes.

*You can level up to get stronger.

*Voice acting is A LOT better than before, especially with npc's.

*Ryo has more weight when he walks and moves to the sensitivity of the analog stick. Basically, he no longer plays like a car.

It's like, catching up with an old friend you haven't spoken to since grammar school. You get so many memories flooding in at once and suddenly you're a kid again! So for those who have gotten to play it: is this Shenmue 3 exactly what you wanted? Or were you hoping for a more modern take? I for one am 100% satisfied with how the game turned out. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves the series.

I watched the GiantBomb Quick Look yesterday.

Heh it looks exactly like Shenmue 3 if it came out in 2002, but with better graphics.

I never played the first 2 on Dreamcast so I don't have the nostalgia for it. I appreciate the uncompromising nature of it, but I don't think I could ever play it.

It looks jank AF. Honestly I was cracking up just watching it - just in sheer awe of how jank it looks. And the way characters talk is absurd, such weird things to say.

I'm happy it finally came out for those who wanted it. I'm curious as well if it lived up to expectations.

This. That's exactly how I feel.

I loved the original two, but i'm not going to buy the third. Standards change fast in this industry, and most Shenmue particularities (gameplay mechanics, voice acting, world design, etc) aged terribly. 20 years was enough for me to lose interest in its, already average, story...and to be honest we have much better story driven games these days.

Still great to see it's getting some good reviews! I always want games, especially low budget ones, to deliver.

@PAL360:

Yeah, there are plenty of new games that blow Shenmue 3 out of the water. Going in, I was never expecting it to match them. But then, that's kinda the point of playing it. A brand, new, old game that continues exactly where the series left off. I can honestly say that I've never played a more faithful sequel to any old game before. Especially considering the large gap between console generations.

@nepu7supastar7: Yeah, im sure fans will like it. I used to also be a fan, there are just too many better options available these days, and not that much free time to play.

If you're already a Shenmue fan, then you're almost certainly going to enjoy it. But if you're not a Shenmue fan, then it's unlikely you're going to be converted. It's a niche cult game, by the fans, for the fans.

Exactly this.

It's a relic from the past. Not a remaster or re imagining. It feels like the game would have come out on Dreamcast or OG Xbox.

Well as a disgruntled backer, I can say that I'm absolutely loving this game. If you are a Shenmue fan, you'll dig it, because it nails everything.

@nepu7supastar7: Multiple reasons: They kept backers in the dark the majority of the time, the whole Epic BS, the lack of day 1 DLC, and the cheap ass paper slipcase they sent as opposed to all the various CE's being offered by retailers. In contrast to Bloodstained, which I also supported at the same time, they treated their backers with far more respect, in addition to being a much better ran and open campaign in general.

The game itself has been great, but I doubt I'll ever back another project after this experience, or at least any that have Deep Silver involved as a publisher.

@Renegade_Fury:

Guess that's a "no" for any future Kickstarter, huh? I get it though. But what if that was the ONLY way we could ever see a sequel to this? Would you still refuse to back it?

@nepu7supastar7: Probably. Even though I'm a huge fan of certain IP's, that doesn't mean I'll give developers and publishers a free pass to trample over me and other customers. For this project, the ones benefiting the most are the people that are buying the game now as opposed to those that helped fund it to begin with by essentially giving y's net and Deep Silver an interest free loan. So if that's the case, I'd rather just sit back and wait. They should be able to use that Epic cash to fund the next Shenmue game anyway instead of needing to take advantage of diehard fans again.

Thinking back, I actually remember I wasn't THAT big of a Shenmue fan. I remember I reviewed the game and gave it like a 6. The story was pretty interesting to me, though, which is why I ended up getting Shenmue 2 and being less impressed with it. I still want to play Shenmue 3, but it's going to be one of those "get it when it's cheap" games.

I don't blame you for wanting to wait on a price drop. The only thing that convinced me to wanna buy now was a review I saw on YouTube.

I’ll check it out when it’s leased or pennies on the dollar.

@pyro1245:

- This was my impression when I saw the preview of Shenmue 3 a while ago. It's different playing it though. One of those games that plays better than it looks. The combat is a bit slow though but part of that has to do with Ryo's new fighting style.

I'm kind of in the same boat. After I finished Shenmue 2 way back in the day, I wanted to continue the story, and I did for a number of years. But, it's been so long, and if did keep the same controls/gameplay elements, I'm inclined to possibly hate it due to how annoying and frustrating those controls might be compared to the traditional state of games today. I may pick it up when it's super cheap at one point, but I doubt I'll pay 50 for it.

It's been this long, I can wait a bit longer and pick it up for much cheaper.

I think it's the only "high profile" kickstarter game that truly delivered on its promise. It's very good so far. I dabbled in the original games but never really played the games until the recent 1+2 collection. I'm really enjoying the game!

This game faired much better than Mighty no 9, Yooka Laylee, and Bloodstained in capturing the preceding game's original feel that they so called tried to "revive."

I'm happy with it. As someone noted, the "backer only" slip case was pretty flimsly lol. They should've done something nicer for the Kickstarter backers. But overall, I'm just happy this game got made. I really do hope there is a fourth one, and I probably would support another campaign.

- omg That's the saddest thing I ever heard, if true! Because there sure are alotta Kickstarter campaigns floating around everywhere. Most of them I've heard turned out to be scams and others gave up even after they reached their goal. Did you contribute to Shenmue 3?

@nepu7supastar7: hardly true.

People have such a warped view of Kickstarter on here...

Pillars of Eternity

Divinity Original Sin

FTL

Banner Saga

Shovel Knight

Hyper Light Drifter

Darkest Dungeon

Superhot

Broken Age

Wasteland 2

Shadowrun Returns

Sunless Sea

Bloodstained

Torment: Tides of Numenera

Undertale

And now Shenmue 3

@nepu7supastar7: I mean, I don't know what to say to that. There are lots of games I've never heard of too, I'm sure, but this is a list of well received games that definitely delivered on their promise
