*This is from a supposed lead on imgur. It could or could not be legit. It looks like it's actually the real deal, but take it with a grain of salt for now.*

IMPORTANT EDIT:

It would appear this prequel is indeed coming but it's not the game being made by DONTNOD. Instead, this prequel is being made by Deck Nine Games and will be shown this E3. The actual sequel/new entry in the series being made by DONTNOD will NOT be shown this E3.

So, in short, TWO GAMES Y'ALL!!

------------------

It would appear the "sequel" might actually be a prequel, focusing on Chloe. On who she was before Max left town and who she became when the first game takes place.

What do you guys make of it? I think it could be cool and DONTNOD have previously stated the "supernatural" stuff was merely a means to an end, they never bothered explaining it because it was just really an excuse to make that story happen, nothing more. So it being a prequel with a focus on Chloe (and no "SUPAH-POWAHS!") would be very much in line with their ideas for the IP itself.

Also the engine definitely seems slightly more polished, as far as the graphics side of it goes, assuming this is indeed legit.

Also, of course, there is also the possibility these could all be focus of one of the chapters (assuming it's an episodic game once again) and not the focus of the entire story.

Hype, not hyped? Would you rather an actual sequel? Tells us how you hella feel System Warriors!

@mems_1224: More than anything, it seems super confusing (assuming the two games bit is indeed real). Granted, this confusion can be cleared up, but yeah... I can see this just making people go: "what? why?" more than anything else.

the story in the first game should have been self contained. there is 0 reason to do a prequel or sequel with the same characters. would have been way more interested in the series if it was more like an anthology with supernatural elements.

@mems_1224: Yeah, I sorta expect the sequel to just be in the same "universe" rather than a direct sequel. I think a direct sequel would be a mistake, it would make the big choices (especially the final one) lose all meaning IMO.

Also, as mentioned above DONTNOD in their directors commentary (free download on Steam) said the supernatural stuff was really just an "excuse". Which is why it was never explained in the game, she just has that power, simple as that. I could see them dropping it OR just picking a new one for new people.

That's what I'm thinking. A prequel doesn't really make sense with how the story in 1 played out. If they use supernatural elements again, I don't think it can be anything like what 1 had unless it's some self-contained thing that ends up disappearing/being forgotten somehow at the end.

Well, it was sorta implied Max and Rachel were very similar. And in fact, that doe you see in some of the episodes IS Rachel, as confirmed by DONTNOD themselves. And as we don't know if we'll play as Chloe, Rachel could indeed also have had some sort of power. Her dying could have been a choice that she actively took, similar to the one you can take at the end of Episode 5.

In theory, yup, however don't count them out as of yet.

This is actually a great idea. There is story to tell here and bringing in Rachel as a character is neat.

Ummm. Max cannot choose to die in Episode 5.

Rachel as the protagonist could be interesting and it could seem like it with one of the screenshots.

@texasgoldrush: I know, but you can screw over an entire town or Chloe, which is something forced upon you the player/Max.

Meant it more in that way, Rachel *could* have been forced to accept her death or something.

Actually the save Chloe ending is the Rachel ending, because of all the deer symbolism in it. The other is the blue butterfly ending.

If they're going for a Chloe prequel, my guess is that it's going to take place in an alternate timeline, which of course is what Life is Strange specializes in. Because Chloe having some kind of time travel power at some point like Max did would throw a wrench in the original game's narrative.

"Hey, Chloe, I can rewind time."

"No way, that happened to me once too."

Hence an alternate timeline being a probable set-up.

Plus, Chloe as the main playable character? That's hella awesome.

All I know is that if we do play as Chloe and"Hella!" isn't an answer to some question during the game I'm gonna be disappointed!

No, it actually looks like its Rachel that will be the protagonist. Notice that in the first game how everyone thought she was larger than life? One leaked screenshot seems to be in her POV.

This could actually explain how Max got her powers and why.

@texasgoldrush:

That could also be the case, but I think it would be a better option if they stuck with Chloe as the main character since she's already well-established and loved by the fans.

Having Rachel as the lead isn't really that enticing to me,since let's face it, Rachel is literally Laura Palmer from Twin Peaks, her only purpose was being the mysterious dead girl, and we only got to know her through interacting with other characters.

But hey, I could be wrong, maybe some of the Dontnod magic will rub off on these Deck Nine Games guys and they'll be able to make something out of Rachel.

@Desmonic: Somehow this will be a fail, regardless if they put the powers or not.

Rachel being less established actually would make her work better as the protagonist, especially with branching dialogue. You have more freedom in how she acts. Also you can give Rachel powers and then link them to Max. But it will make for a very dark and depressing end. Chloe would actually limit the gameplay if she is the lead.

Do not forget that Ashly Burch, who voices Chloe, can write.

Interesting, so we're gettig not just a sequel but now a perquel (maybe).

I mean, if it's handled well then I;m all for getting more Life is Strange in my life and getting more abuse towards my heart and feels.

It will be more difficult to handle well, I do think. Maybe harder than DONTNODs new LIS game. The reason is Rachel Amber.

She is just as or even more irresponsible than Chloe with improper relationships with older men, as well as being a party girl and a drug user. Her death will also be very difficult to portray. Either Rachel OR Chloe will be harder to portray as protagonists than Max due to stronger personalities (and Chloe's character is even more rigid). However, this also can open up new opportunities and explain even why Chloe says "hella" a lot, or why Max gets powers.

I like Life is Strange but this prequel seems unnecessary to me. I feel like we're done with Chloe and Arcadia Bay, so the new entry by DONTNOD is the natural continuation of the series. But who knows, it could be good.

Its major influence Twin Peaks, did a prequel called Fire walk With Me, that used the murder victim as the protagonist.

This could be a nod to it.
