Thoughts, SW? Will you be checking out Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii? I’m a bit burned out from Yakuza, so if I do, it won’t be for a long time.
Classic Gamespot, giving it one of the lowest scores.
It sounds fantastic. I pre-ordered it as soon as it was announced, so...day one for me?
Eurogamer's write up is a fun read. The game is apparently bonkers in all the best ways.
Flop! Oh noes! 😅
Looks very fun and a game that is right up my alley. Got a little behind in Yakuza. Still want to play Infinite Wealth first. Definitely would like to play this sometime down the road.
Makes it easier for me to hold off on a purchase. I will get it eventually, but I'm still playing KCD2 anyways. These games usually go on sale rather quickly, so I'll pick it up for 30 or 40 bucks.
I used to get Yakuza games day 1 since the PS3 days but ever since Y7 I havent been as enthusiastic. Still, the Yakuza game I havent played is Y8 and now this... will get around to play them someday... when the highest tier edition drops to a more resonable pricing.
I'm a couple of chapters into this one now. It pretty much delivers everything I didn't know I wanted from a Yakuza game.
I appreciate that this one feels...different from earlier games, and not just because of the turbo-drifting sailing ships. The narrative is more irreverent and more doggedly determined to avoid the actual plot, which suits Majima's character better. The combat is faster and more mobile. Majima rolls with the crazy sidequests better than Kiryi or Ichiban.
So yeah, it's fun!
If we be really honest 7/10 seems right for the series high-points. Scores from these outlets are generally retarded with inflated numbers, or just giving a publisher an easy high score to keep favor. However despite the pros and cons it seems about right for a 7/10.
From what I've seen fans claim, it's the best one since Zero. They offer a lot of mini games and interesting side objectives. However they're not exactly masters of any in particular craft and it's more about having variety to keep the player entertained. 7/10 is well above average and means "Very good".
An 8/10 usually means they do one thing extremely well, top tier stuff, but has flaws in other areas. An 8/10 means "great".
9's and 10's from an unbias perspective just means top tier in the genres craft. With very.. very few drawbacks that are noticeable. Masterpieces that are timeless. Even then a lot of 10/10's are frankly quite undeserved and should be bumped down to an 8/10 at the very least. Uncharted 4 a masterpiece? get out of here!
Seems like a good game. While the turn based is a breath of fresh air, i still prefer the old combat style of yakuza. And to add goro majima is one of my favorite character in video game. Will definitely check this out.
Just finished infinity wealth a month ago ( and loved) and this looks great so will definitely pick it up soon!

I don't think it's the best in the series (so far). Pirate Yakuza feels like a greatest hits of Yakuza minigames, combined with a solid combat system and a fun pirate theme, but the story so far is pretty slim and the recycled content is a bit more noticeable this time. It's more fun than the average 7 nowadays, but I don't think it's a top Yakuza game yet.
Having said that, Yakuza 0 is legitimately one of the greatest action-adventure games ever made, and I don't think you could fairly score it anything less than a 9. The story, the combat, the substories and the setting are all top of their game - not just in the Yakuza series, but across other similar games too. It's a top-tier game, to use your language.
Like a Dragon is also a far better JRPG than it has any right to be. It stands among the best JRPGs in the last 5 years, particularly for its strong humour and bittersweet story.
Other games in the series have their pros and cons, but I could easily see some of them scoring 8s or 9s. Gaiden, the Judgment games, and Infinite Wealth are all loaded with excellent gameplay, characters, stories, and art direction. Yakuza 5 is also notable - its measured pace will turn some people away, but it really is like five games in one.
