Alright, I was one of the lucky guys who was able to get a hold of the game early. In this mini-review I will go through all the different aspects of the game - even the packaging!
PACKAGING (How much care was put into it).
- The box art is fun and fitting to the game, you can tell the artists actually thought about it for a little bit.
- When you open up the box there's a inner box art that has patch work and stickers all over it! When you take out the manual there's a friendly looking sackboy looking up at you!
- This is a really weird thing to praise, but the manual is awesome. It looks like it's a spiral bound notebook and is really colorful and busy on the inside.
PRESENTATION (Menus, overall design)
- The game has a really fluent and beautiful menu system. It manages to be fun and crazy looking while still being functional and helpful.
- The game is extremely polished. I have noticed absolutely NO physics glitches or oddities. This is a marvel considering how much can be going on at once with item being broken/falling.
- Load times are damn quick - very nice.
GAMEPLAY (How does it play?)
- It's good to note that this game is only as fun as the level your playing in. If you play a junky user level, chances are you won't be having a whole lot of fun. However, the Story mode is insanely well designed, funny and undeniably fun.
- The game really encourages you to go and collect all the hidden goodies since they will either be new costumes/fabrics for your sackboy, or will be tools you can use to make your own level. Addictive.
GRAPHICS (Core visuals, art style)
- Let me be outright with this one: LittleBigPlanet looks amazing.
- It has a jumbled, steampunk old toy-box kind of look to it (yeah, I couldn't explain it any better). It is one of the most impressive, unique and memorable art styles all generation.
- The details in the textures is really defined and sharp.
AUDIO (How's it sound?)
- The music section was a pleasant surprise for me - it's wonderful.
- It's a mix of fantastic original tracks and some licensed indie tracks that are very fitting.
- The original tracks have a striking mix of real instruments and electronic sounds.
CREATION TOOLS (It's the main hook of the game - how is it?)
- To make a level like the ones in the single player you will have to be dropping a good 60+ hours - no kidding. It takes time, but it's very satisfying.
- You can do almost ANYTHING. I have never run into an instance where I have wanted to do something and I couldn't. The game gives you the tools to let your imagination go buck wild.
- You can do complicated things in uncomplicated ways. The interface makes it smoother and easier to build complicated things.
Final Score: 9.8/10
GameSpot Scoring System: 10/10
I could nit-pick if I wanted to, but it's just not worth it - this game is a freaking classic. It's addictive, fun, imaginative, unique and one of the best games of the generation. You need to play it, and I dare you not to smile. :)
