Alot of Newbies around on SW's and alot of misinformed on the definition of Hardcore. Majority of people use the term and fail so hard for several reasons! 1) Graphics (if it has pretty graphics, Blood its hardcore.) 2) Age rating (if its below specific age it cannot be hardcore) 3) Genre (FPS = hardcore, Sports sim = Casual). Now lets see how these 3 definitions fail which are used on SW's the most.

1) Graphics: I dont see how Bloodmakes a game more hardcore, Majority of games with emphasis on blood (GTA, GoW, RE5, Madworld) have easy learning curves and game mechanics which is a better indicator of Hardcore and casual than graphics. Resident Evil previous to 4 was Hardcore for several reasons in comparison to newer encounters. 1) Learning Curve on control scheme. 2) Puzzles 3) exploration, Simple facts on why RE3 downwards is hardcore and why 4 and 5 are not. Violence doesnt make a game hardcore or casual but having a emphasis on violence rather than Controls, Game mechanics. You wouldnt say Nightmare on Elm Street is more of a Hardcore Movie than say Silent of the Lambs because Nightmare on Elm Street is OTT in blood but ingames its alrigt.

2) Age rating: If its below a specific age it cannot be hardcore?! Yes i see this alot and find it hilarious. Manhunt, GTA, GoW, Madworld are some of the easiest games control wise, 10 year olds can play them. Then you have games for all the family which are more complex than these titles like Zack and Wiki, Metroid Prime 3. TWEWY, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2 are all more hardcore as theyre more complex ingame but they dont have a 15 or 18 ratings.

3) Genre : I dont get why people say FPS are hardcore. 1st there isnt many puzzles in these games, No exploration, usual game mechanics. Though basing a opinion on a whole genre is total failure as you will get a mix of types of games under 1 genre(fallout, FF, Lunar Knights). FF is a RPG but its one of linear ones in comparison to say Knights of the nightmare or Final Fantasy Tactics. The only Genre which doesnt have casuals is MMORPG's.

I'd add more but meh....

There is a accepted definition of hardcore?

P.S. I know many people who play WoW and not any other video game, does that make them hardcore? No.

depends on how into WOW they are. if they send 30+ hours a week on WoW and do raids every other day, then yes they are hardcore. just like ppl that can play tetris like crazy. even if they don't play any other games they are hardcore.

You're "i" should be "I", how could you make such an error? You were so distracted by the petty issues you made a very real and very serious error that puts everything in jeopardy.

:P

EDIT: I do proof read my posts, sort of, and GS randomly likes to mess them up. :x

There is NO definition. Not an official one, not even an unofficial one. Nobody can ever agree on what it means. Therefore, hardcore doesn't exist. Gamers are gamers that play different games. There are dedicated gamers, and there are gamers who play occasionally. But not hardcore or casual.

Hardcore gamers don't post in forums because they would rather be gaming. System Wars and its inhabitants are not HARDCORE, none of us are. Being a blind fanboy does not equal hardcore so that disqualifies 90% of the people in here. Arguing about sales is not HARDCORE there goes another 5%. HARDCORE gamers do not debate about graphics vs gameplay because it makes no difference. There is not a single person on this forum with a post count above 2 that is HARDCORE! I do not ever want to be a HARDCORE gamer personally.

No. But people just love to label themselves.I guess they feel that if they aren't immediately identified as something, no one will pay attention to them.

Hardcore games are the ones which require lots of skill and/or gaming time. Doesn't matter if it is about zombies or about cute teddy bears.

I believe that a hardcore gamer means how much TIME one puts into The World of Gaming. Which is playing games, reading about games, and talking about games.

From System Wars sticky:

Casual

Generally accepted to be gamers who are not advocates of the medium, but enjoy playing mainstream titles on occasion. A gamer who plays Guitar Hero or Madden with friends on the weekends, without a deeper attachment to the gaming hobby would be a casual gamer. Casual gamers may play some of the same titles that hardcore or non-traditional gamers enjoy as well, though typically without the devotion to gaming seen with hardcore gamers.

Hardcore **

Generally considered to be a longtime, dedicated gamer with a deep love for the medium. Hardcore gamers have typically played a large number of games, follow industry news, and have a genuine interest both in playing videogames and the hobby as a whole. The hardcore demographic also includes those gamers who become dedicated to the development of games.

Non-Traditional Gamers

Gamers who have purchased systems to play games aimed at demographics not traditionally targeted (such as young women, middle-aged men, or seniors) are considered non-traditional gamers. Titles such as Cooking Mama, Scene It, Wii Sports, and Brain Age are believed to be aimed at this group.

**The exact definition of a "hardcore gamer" is a subject that is sometimes debated within System Wars - this definition encompasses a general explanation for the term's use in most discussions, however the exact games, systems, and habits of a "hardcore gamer" are a matter of personal opinion.

I agree somehow on the description in general. However, you have to differentiate between a hardcore gamer who play a lot of video games, love gaming in general, andthose who are elitist gamers, a gamer who believes his gaming point of view is superior and better for others aka fanboys.

this may be the first time that i'll agree with you lol. i loved Neverwinter and Baldur's Gate. those were almost a decade ago (Baldur's gate was 1999?) @_@

yea, i dont like games that have too much blood or swearing or what-have-yous. they're just irritating especialy the swearing gangsters wtf. not hardcore at all. for me though, Disgaea>FF Tactics. uh-oh. lol. there's this game on the ps1 called Tactics Ogre (The BEst eva!). i'd say Demon's Souls is hardcore, not jsut because of the difficulty, but because of the weapons and new online and offline mechanics etc. i love the stamina bar lmao.

If you like Call of Duty because you're "good" at the game, and hate other online shooters you are not hardcore

If you magically got better at Counter Strike by switching to Source, and dismiss 1.6 as a good game then you are not hardcore.

If you think TF2 is a highly competitive game you are not hardcore.

If you dismiss the entirety of the Wii library for being kiddy you are not hardcore.

If you dismiss the DS's library for being kiddy you are not hardcore.

If you think the PC is dying, and has no good games you are not hardcore.

If you didn't like the Sega Dreamcast then **** you.

The list could honestly just go on and on. Hardcore gamers play skill-based games, they play underrated games, they keep up to date with gaming news, and they just play a lot. Hardcore gamers don't dismiss great games just because they're colorful, or don't have the best graphics, and they also don't only restrict themselves to shooters.

Hardcore games are just games that cater unflinchingly to a very specific audience.

Hardcore gamers are just video game conneseuirs.

Not that complicated.

[QUOTE="lowe0"][QUOTE="dotWithShoes"][QUOTE="Dibdibdobdobo"] Hush now.... Thats the way i see it but its funny to see arguing over such petty things.

I've heard of Nightmare on Elm Street.. but never heard of Silent of the Lambs.. What is Silent of the Lambs?

Are you putting him on, or have you never actually seen The Silence of the Lambs?

I have very much both seen and read Silence of the Lambs.. Just pointing out his 'spelling' mistake.. which, I do think he made a few times.. btw, the book is much better than the movie(but isn't it always).

Defining hard core is easy: soft outside and hard at it's core. :P

I guess the word hardcore has more than one meaning to it.

There is no "true" definition of hardcore and/or casual gamers, and there has never been a consensus on SW about what is even the most common operational definition for either term.

I strictly use it to indicate the level of passion for the hobby, which I can make a comparison to movies like so: a movie fan who sees The Dark Knight and Twilight in theaters and buys a few movies from time to time would be like the casual gamer to me. It is something to pass the time that they enjoy. They may know a few developers, they know what the systems are, but they care most about having fun with a game, and that is about it. They are the group who does not care about aspect ratios, etc. They just want their entertainment. Nothing wrong with that.

A hardcore gamer is like a movie buff. A movie buff knows the actors in a movie, knows most directors, will own hundreds of films, sees plenty in theaters, cares about the business side of the industry, etc. They are the ones talking about director's intentions and such. They never get the fullscreen version of a matted film. Likewise, a hardcore gamer to me knows quite a bit about the industry. They might not know how to code, but they understand the processes involved in making a game. They have extensive collections of games usually, and they are generally just more involved and interested in the industry than a casual gamer.

And for the record, both are crucially vital to the industry's survival IMO.

A hardcore gamer is somebody who plays games 24/7, you won't find them on Gamespot since they *GASP* will be too busy playing games.

So a hardcore gamer is someone who is dead from lack of sleep and food?

If you play an FPS like Project Reality or Red Orchestra you'll realize where the "hardcore" aspect comes in. Your average FPS is not "hardcore," but you need to understand that games outside of sims can be incredibly taxing on you like Quake and Unreal Tournament. Their pace and the level of inertia, speed, platforming grace, instantaneous targeting, most of all leading your target and landing a perfect explosion right at the place they'll be when the rocket hits is extraordinarily difficult. When I play Red Orchestra I have to focus on flanking maneuvers, covering flanks, smoking enemy sniping buildings, covering cap zones at the appropriate times, blending defense and counter-offensives, and so on. The most extraordinarily difficult thing is wading into close quarters combat when equipped with a bolt action rifle. First of all, the game has free aim and no crosshairs and shouldering the weapon takes about a full second. People hipshooting with submachine guns will fill you full of holes in that time period. You have to control the free aim precisely and over distances or against moving targets you have to lead them perfectly because the game simulates travel time. Cover is important and thus so are flanking maneuvers. There's a bunch of tactical junk that goes along with these games, but even the fast paced games like UT3 require more eye-hand coordination than you would believe. Try getting a granny or a ten year old to dominate at Counter Strike or Quake, I guarantee you they'll get toasted.
