I'm glad their concentrating on advanced rope physics, that sure looks like a good place to concentrate time, and effort. sigh Look, I'm not saying people should stop trying to improve things, but I'm sick and tired, and this is especially true for FPS, that developers focus so much effort on mundane eye candy stuff like this and then give you an 8 hour game with a garbage story. Why can't developers focus on making a lengthy fun game with polished gameplay and then focus on stuff like this. Zerostatic0
I'm totally with you

yes, because we all know the gameplay and story will suck :|

Rope Physics means more than just ropes, it also powers the trees physics systems, bending and such, and also the tentacles of the aliens drones and hunters (the big thing attacking the aircraft carrier) also cloth is based around the rope physics system.
So i would say it is a good place to concentrate time and effort...
Here is a quote from the write up of the Cryengine 2 demonstration
"Advanced Rope PhysicsRope physics is not just about how naturally a rope bridge should bend and break (though that makes for a really great demonstration), but it also helps us bend vegetation and tentacle-like weaponry you'll see later in the game. This makes responses to things like wind, rain and character movement more natural."

I never said the game is going to have a bad story or be too short, but I was making an observation of tendency particularly with FPS. Remember Doom 3? Everybody was having orgies about all the graphical technology being used in the game, and what happened? It didn't live up to expectations with it's boring linear levels and uninspired gameplay. Of course there are gems like System Shock 2 and the Half-life series, particularly Half-life 2 which had great physics, AI, and graphics and still was a fun game but these games are the exception, not the rule.[QUOTE="Pdiddy105"][QUOTE="mmogoon"][QUOTE="Zerostatic0"]I'm glad their concentrating on advanced rope physics, that sure looks like a good place to concentrate time, and effort. sigh Look, I'm not saying people should stop trying to improve things, but I'm sick and tired, and this is especially true for FPS, that developers focus so much effort on mundane eye candy stuff like this and then give you an 8 hour game with a garbage story. Dear Sir,
From start to finish (including signature) your post made a helluva lotta sense. I applaud you.

P.S. That was not sarcasm, by the way. It's just refereshing to read something other then the typical "cows/sheep/lemmings OMG/PWNZ" drivel that tends to quickly fill up the barrel here.
Okay guys you need to realize that I SAW that entire Cryengine 2 demonstration and its physics have gameplay implications that are obvious and far-reaching.
Let's say you're running along a bridge, or see an enemy on a bridge. You can destroy it or it can be destroyed, causing whoever is on it to fall as the bridge collapses.
Let's say you're hiding in a building. A tank drives into the building, and you narrowly escape, but watch as the tank bulldozes through the building as it breaks into a hundred splintered pieces.
Let's say you're standing on a road in between several buildings. A storm blasts its way toward you, ripping the buildings on either side of you out of the ground and into hundreds of pieces that fly realistically towards you in a blast of wind and dust.
Let's say a humvee drives past you, you shoot out its tire, and it slides and skids, while sparks ignite from the ground having contact with the rims of the wheel, and the humvee flips.
These are all instances you can see in the CryEngine 2 demo. Guess if any of them have any possible effect on gameplay.

Exactly. What's so orgasmic about all of that?

how can you people agree with this quote? why are you assuming the game will be short with a crappy story? you haven't played it?! for all you know they could've finished the rest of the game already and are looking at ways to make it better!

It should have a use provided CryTek doesn't screw up. It's probably overkill in this case, but it would definitely make for some interesting gameplay situations where you would be able to shoot out a bridge, stopping enemies from following you.

You could cut down bridges in many games before this...
Did anyone bother to read what others have posted?
The rope physics system is NOT just about ropes and bridges, it also powers the vegatation bending in the wind and by people and also is used heavily in the aliens design with their tentacles. If it was just about "ropes" i could understand, but its more than that.
The top part of the rope does a weird twitch upward right after the first barrel lands beside it. I'm just sayin'. :) -Sir-TiX-a-LoT-
Not really, the movement is completely natural. IF you notice, the barrel falls at an angle, hitting the far end of the bridge first, then the close one. Because of this (and because ropes aren't fully elastic), the far part will go down, and quickly make the near part go up for a fraction of a second untill the barrel makes full contact.
For a real-time demonstration, it was an impressive display.

Bad choice on Doom3. Everyone knows, ID games tend to be good tech demos first, and games second.

It was demonstrating the physics.
So physics are all about barrels raining like hail? Wow... That's all I have to say.
