I guess its official now.  Nintendo reigns supreme in Japan.  PS3 couldnt even outsell the Wii with its biggest release of the year.

The PS3 is more than twice the price of a Wii... For it to sell 44k systems is pretty good for that type of price, but yes, Nintendo > Japan.

While Nintendo always sells systems at profit.

No they are sold out in Japan right now.  The sales rotate by 20k each week.  The wii is consistantly selling on a 60k to 80k basis.  60k one week 80k the next.  Its been like this for the past 2 months now.

Some iSupply breakdown says that Sony is loosing 250 per system but that seems too high based on the prices they used. They had the RSX at like $150 but I have a feeling its more like $85 or less since they fab it themselves. I would say they are losing around $125 per system and stand to lose a bit less with the CELL die shrink and the removal of the emotion engine. I would bet that the cost savings of those parts is around $50-$75. Not to mention that the blu-ray drive was listed at $125 but again I wouldn't doubt if it was at least $50 cheaper than that. They should be at break even point on manufacturing within the end of the year. They are an electronics manufacturing giant after all. Nintendo on the other hand is probably making around $80 on every system sold.

Damage Control.

PS3 = the home for high end next gen game development in Japan / wi = for everything else.  Xbox360 is dead in japan.  Watch as all of your beloved japanese RPG's not published by MS (Trusty Bell) trickle to PS3 and then all other 3rd party japaneses games...cease to be made on the 360.

xbox360 is on it's way

Sony does not manufacture the RSX. AFAIK, it was designed and is manufactured by nVidia.

As for the BluRay drive, recall that consumer BluRay players are still selling for around $800.

Microsoft is not publishing Trusty Bell. That's Namco. And if you say Japan is going to abandon the 360, what about Capcom with Dead Rising, Lost Planet, and eventually RE/Biohazard 5 (they declared it multiplat from the start)? Konami with the latest DDR? Team Ninja with its list of games?

PS. Gundam games are to Japan what celebrity-starring games (like 50 Cent Bulletproof) are to us--subpar games that sell strictly on the name.

Here is the thing too. We all know the Japanese love anything virtual. So with the home announcement I think you will see more systems start selling.
