Rare Questions Microsoft's Marketing of Viva PiñataViva Piñata developer Rare has questioned why its owner Microsoft decided to back Gears of War with such a high-profile marketing campaign, which left its own new franchise in the shadows last Christmas.Epic = independant, Rare = owned by Microsoft.
Software engineer James Thomas feels that the new family-friendly IP lost out to Epic's Gears of War, which enjoyed a much bigger marketing budget from Microsoft, helping it top the charts all over the world. http://www.n4g.com/industrynews/News-74644.aspxcould this be another Epic ? Everyone remember how epic got pissed of at Microsoft few months back then epic was all like " UT3 is now PS3 time Exclusive for the holidays" ? :pnaughtydog360
Also UT3 was announced for PC and PS3 first, than they announce a year or so later for the Xbox 360. So was it a shock that it would be released later on for the Xbox 360? "Looks Like Rare is pissed OF at Microsoft!! oh no!!!!
I concur. Rare hasn't made a decent game since the 64 days.and marketing the hell outta Gears worked out so bad for MS

Rare once to me was like Blizzard. Rare hasn't showed up since the late 90's. Maybe they should be mad for not doing anything worthwhile since Golden Eye and maybe Perfect Dark. Epic...haha...is a joke Unreal 2004 was a complete noobfest kinda like Halo. I still play Return to Castle Wolfenstein from 2001 cause that has better multiplaying.
One software engineer (programmer) thought that MS didn't cvommit enought resources to marketing viva Pinata, a game that appeals to a much smaller fraction of its user base than GeOW, and no Rare is upset at MS? One programmer? Seriously? You wrote this over one programmer?
Wow... You must be a cow.

Yeah, I'm sorry, but who honestly believes that even with equal advertising, Viva Piñata would come close to Gears? Are you serious? It's a decent game, but I've played it for a half hour since I bought it (I got it mostly for my wife). Gears was the console title last year, so I'm pretty sure MS isn't thinking they messed up on their choice of which game to push. If Viva came out this year, would Rare be upset that Halo 3 got more time in the spotlight? Please. The two games don't even appeal to the same groups of people.
1. This is taking a quote and blowing it up like its a big controversy
2. Rare complains about how they had no advertising? I beg to differ, they had a whole freaking television show for Viva Pinata, there you go, shut up Rare, Microsoft owns you you get your pay checks either way, Microsoft doesn't own Epic so they had advertising contracts with Epic blah blah blah, legal stuff legal stuff.
Rare fit in a time when gaming was open to new ideas and good times. Gamers today just want shooters or mmorpg's. Gamers got as dull and boring as school. Sumotaii
What new ideas has Rare been bringing lately? Let's be honest; a fair amount of Rare's employees went over to Free Radical, who (not surprisingly) started churning out the great Timesplitters series. Viva Piñata is a cool idea and all, but really, how many people does that game really appeal to? I'm all for diversity in games (Persona 3 is one of my favorite games from the last gen, and Shenmue is one of my all-time favorites), but that doesn't mean that any game which is "different" is automatically better. I'm sure if Rare put out unique games which were also less aimed at children and families, they'd be getting more praise than they are right now. But again, like SquareEnix, a lot of the people that made Rare great have already left for another company.

Well with Rare they are owned by MS, Epic is not owned by MS. Also about UT 3 being timed exclusive for the PS3. You cows should know if it is on a console and the PC it is not exclusive. Unless that only counts for the 360 and PC.
While both Gears and Viva Pinata are great games in their own right,it seems that the good folks at Rare need to understand that the audience that Gears is aimed at is Microsoft's Target Audience - Mature gamers who want blood and gibbing, graphic, intimate gratuitous violence and rifles with chainsaw bayonettes! Chocolate and peanut butter, baby! Because that's what makes money and that's what sells xbox Live subscriptions... ka-ching!!!
[QUOTE="sexy_chimp"]Rare, come back to Nintendo!!!!daqua_99... the only place they made great games was on the Nintendo 64 ...
And the SNES...
I read the interview that this came from. It isn't that big of a deal. The people who worked on Viva Pinata are already working on another project.
Here's the original interview:

Nothing but a two bit journalist hack who is trying to stir the pot when nothing is happening.

Agreed, the fact that Nintendo lost Rare is one of my main reasons to not buy a Wii =/. Most of the games I played nonstop for Nintendo consoles were made by Rare...or Nintendo obviously.
Been gaming since early 80's and there are those much older then me on herem but this is just part of life. People want there fav companies to always be what they were, in reality its not. Sega is long gone, Atari, Capcom ain't what it was, Square has become a joke of what it was during the Super Nes days. Rare also. Sony is feeling it now with the PS3 and no matter how much i love Nintendo, im a realist, they been going downhill since they put out the Virtual Boy. N64 was cool, but come on they will never top the Super Nes. Just like you wish your fav bands would get back together even if so that whole image they had way back when they came from nothing is lost when they make there first million and live in hollywood.
Roll with the punchesand acceptchange or hold onto your past and childhood forever.
Its like most people think Sony is the devil and Nintendo are good christians,,,Nintendo was evil in the late 80's and sued everyone. If they weren;t so selfish in 1992 then Sony would put there add on cd player to the Super Nes...Instead they when with Phillips and let Sony crush them and Sega in mid 90's due to a good marketing. Now Sony have lost there minds, but now most gamers get Microsoft. One builds up, one falls down. The normal of life. Sorry for horrible sentences im at work.
All gaming does these days is make it next gen, but in reality we been playing these games since the Atari 2600 and Sega Masterbit. They just slap on a fresh coat of Paint and send it out to the masses. Nintendo Sold out with the Wii, its there Metallica Black Album.
I absolutely love it how all the sheep think Rare would be better of with Nintendo:lol: They act as if MS is the big mean company, when it was Nintendo's decision to sell them. They could have said no, but they didn't. They needed the money for other GC games. SpaceDragonMan
Bad generalization. The 360 has lots of good games to choose from and Rare's games kind of get lost in that mix. The Wii's library isn't all that great so Rare's games likely would've stood out more. I don't know the exact numbers, but I think there are almost as many Wii owners out there as 360 owners. Since they don't have games like Bioshock, Halo or Gears to choose from, they'd probably flock towards whatever Rare puts out.
Microsoft hasn't even fully utilized Rare. They spent $300 Million on them, and they've only made three games, with all three selling poorly.
If anyone needs to be let go from Microsoft, it's Rare.
But that doesnt mean they get treated Unfairly, in my view everyone should be treated fairly ..Gears of War >>> Rare's games. Does that help, Rare?

OMG OMG OMG CALL THE COPS!!!
no seriously what the hell does it matter? Microsoft has enough money to do whatever they want to rare. I can imagine this
Rare: You guys totally forgot about our ownage viva pinata and we could have had some great sales
Microsoft: Ok we are sorry here have a couple million dollars and we promise to give you a better marketing campaign.
Weren't there rumours around the time the news about bungie started surfacing that rare were also in talks to split?
It really wouldn't surprise me if they did.
nicenator
Rare and Microsoft to split ? that would be really bad news for Microsoft, it would b killing Micrsoft Left and right and making sony slowly winig the Champ
