When Machinarium was originally released on PC in 2009, it was acclaimed for its engaging puzzles and beautiful artwork. So often, though, small indie games like it come out to critical success but fail to sell well. As a result, it's encouraging to hear that Machinarium has sold very well since it launched. Developer Amanita Design recently announced that over 4 million copies of the game have been sold across PC, PS3, Vita, and mobile devices.

In an infographic published by Amanita on its Facebook page (you can see it at the bottom of this story), the developer shares some interesting statistics about how the game has sold over its lifespan. For example, it sold best on PC, which was its original platform of release. 49 percent of its total revenue came from PC, Mac, or Linux users, with PS3 and Vita only accounting for 7 percent. The remaining 44 percent came from mobile users.

I was a bit shocked by that last bit about how nearly half the sales came from mobile.

Played it and liked it.

Why do people still measure success only by units sold? Pretty useless info if you don't know average price etc (notice 35% is humble bundle for example...)

Good game they deserve the success.

Seriously popular in the UK, 10% of all sales is pretty incredible for a global release.

Humble bundle = 7% of total revenue on PC (the graph beside that :P )

I bought it on a Steam sale years ago and only played 20 mins. Shame on me.

It's a great mobile game. I've beaten it multiple times on PC but decided to purchase another copy on mobile (albeit with the money Google Surveys provided) to support them further.

It's hard to find quality "point-and-click/tap" puzzle games of this caliber. There are a few others that have made their mark, but Machinarium is extremely well-polished and amazing in all of it's steampunk glory.

Own it, need to play it to finish, was bored the one time I tried it.

I played their other game Botanicula, now that was a rad ass adventure game.

That App Store units sold to net revenue ratio is interesting to say the least. I'm not too surprised at the mobile share, Adventure games found a place quite early on the platform and that platform has grown to like challenging puzzles.

It's well deserved. It's the best Adventure game to come out last gen with its focus on challenging, varied, self-contained puzzles that subvert its setting and context so well. The propeller puzzle is legendary and belongs in the videogame puzzle hall of fame, even if it wasnt one of the harder ones in the game.

Its soundtrack is also right up there as being one of the best. It is one of the only few soundtracks that works just fine as when listened to straight up as a standalone ambient album.

Admittedly, I own like 5 copies of the game. It's one of the best indie titles out there.

I'd also recommend their most recent game, Samorost 3. It was criminally overlooked when it came out.

Yeah, I think I got it from their site, then from a humble bundle and I also got the wonderfully packaged physical copy with the goodies; I am the 2% lol.
