Maguire: New 40GB PS3 will silence the doubters

SCE UK boss Ray Maguire has told MCV that the introduction of the new entry level 40GB PS3 will silence the doubters and take the platform to 'the next level'.

In the week that SCE UK introduced the new SKU at £299 and revealed that the 60GB console is to be phased out, boss Maguire (pictured) stressed that Sony's strategy was the result of industry pressure, falling production costs, and a desire to boost installed base as the industry moves into peak period.

"You've seen in the pages of MCV that most people want the price to come down - we have to take a more strategic view on when we do these things," said Maguire. "We're always mindful of price and installed base, but we're also mindful that we have a sustainable business.

"We've been considering this since launch - this is all part of a very carefully thought-out plan."

Maguire also hit out at the level of anti-Sony feeling on internet forums.

"If the product was too expensive, of course they're going to feel 'anti', but now I imagine there will be some changing of attitudes," he said.

"They don't have sight of running the company and the financials involved. So they end up with internet information - and that is often based on a complete lack of understanding of the facts."

Microsoft as the newcomer has analaysed what went well and what didn't go so well last generation. They have come to this generation competing on some of the fronts it lost out on last generation..ie number of games, number of exclusive AAAs, accessability, an early start etc. Their gameplan has been arguably a success. Microsoft hasn't just sat back but has come to this generation fighting and for gaming in general, they deserve some credit.

Even morecredit deserves to go to Nintendo. THey look down and out with the Gamecube but they have refined what they are good at and developed their appeal to casual gamers. They have taken this generation in new directions and have been very very competitive.

Sony have done some good stuff. I do think Blu-ray will win the format war, Sony have the Six-axis etc but with their original pricing strategy and approach to 3rd party developers they have just been a little arrogant. I believe they have taken the attitude that everyone will buy what ever they sell at whatever price and I also beleive this is how a lot of people perceive Sony.

Just to finish, I just want to say that this is my opinion and that I don't think Sony will 'lose' this generation at all and will maintain a healthy market share....but they sure have lost a lot of ground to Ninty and M$!

I pitty you for waiting so long to play thos game, I pitty you for thinking FF is the best RPG ever, I pitty you for thinking MGS is the best Stealth, I feel sorry for you for waiting so long forgames and paying 40 bucks for a demo.... Far more important is the success of there upcoming Xmas line up. Even at the rediced price I still wont be buying one unless. Eye of judgement, Ratchet or Uncharted blow me away. cakeorrdeath

Just pick one up when MGS4 comes out. I know a lot of people who are doing that. It's probably the most sound choice to do at this point of the PS3's life. Unless those games menioned really are great. Or Uncharted or Haze. Who knows till we see the reviews come in.

the X360 may not be the most reliable of machines but its got the best games & mine works perfect 20months after buying it.

p.s. sometimes u can fix the RROD simply be unplugging everything including HDD & replugging it- that worked for me & my console has been working for months since then- i cant help wondering how many ppl got the RROD & sent the console off to be fixed unneccessarily.

It made me think twice why he didn't say ''media'' but he actually did say forums. All the negativity around these forums against Sony doesn't mean much though. The casual gamers don't hang around forums since they don't even care for the gaming market and industry.

Why forums and not media? I guesssome SCE marketing folks have been taking a look at forums like Gamespot for the critisicm on Sony's expensive PS3.

Imo I think 399 euro's is a reaaally good start. And I'm beginning to see them care more then the arogant Sony from 2005 and 2006.
