"The amount of action we're able to put on the screen at 60 frames per second really dwarfs what we were able to do a year ago at 30 frames per second," said Hastings. "What's most exciting is the way things are headed right now I think we'll see just as big a leap from our second generation engine to our third as we did from the first to second."

Looking ahead, he was equally as optimistic: "We're already seeing a big leap in what people are able to do with the PS3 now compared to a year ago, and we're going to see just as big a leap between now and the end of 2008," said the Insomniac Games Chief Creative Officer. "I think we're going to continue seeing major leaps each year in what people are able to do with the machine for at least three or four more years."

And how are future games going to look better? It seems it's all down to the use of the much talked about PlayStation 3 SPUs, which until now haven't been fully used by developers.

"The tech and gameplay teams have moved tons of things over to the SPUs that used to run on the PPU," said Hastings on the improvements made to Insomniac's game engine. "Collision and physics are entirely running on SPUs now, which allows us to put much more on the screen at once than we were able to with Resistance. Moving more and more code to the SPUs is an ongoing process and I think we'll continue to see major benefits from this for several more years."

I guess it depends on what their definition of major is. The GPU tech is pretty old (2005 tech) and I can't see too many advances being made there after 2008. Advances in programing games for multi-thread CPUs will be made but with other limiting factors I'm not sure how much improvements it will bring to graphics quality. Both for the 360 and PS3.

It will depend on your definition of major. Don't expect to see anything like Crysis on consoles, they simply don't have the tech regardless of how well you optimise it. The CPUs in the 360 and PS3 could handle crysis at high levels of detail but the RAM and GPUs will forever prevent them from doing it. My definition of a major advance would be UT2004 to UT3, so as I said it depends on your definition of major. So far i would describe the advances made on PS3 since launch as insignificant or small, not major.

well, i don't know. i don't expect it either, but in reality, i don't know crap about developping games.

Judging from what i've seen on PS3, i think the textures will always be kind of a let down compared to games like crysis. And so will the amount of anti aliassing.

All this talk about Crysis, I really want to see this game running on a top of the line computer. Because right now the videos I've seen on the net aren't convincing me there's that much of a difference.

Insomniac is a very talented development house. Granted, they are obviously biased, but they also have many years in the industry, so their opinion/outlook does have some weight behind it.

Tell me how to post screens and I'll show you how the game looks when it's maxed on nice hardware.

Games will keep on getting more refined from a visual standpoint but you are absolutely retarded if you are expecting major leaps year after year. The only major leap consoles ever have is from launch games to 2nd generation games (i.e. 360 launch games to Gears of War or Wii launch games to Super Mario Galaxy or PS3 launch games to Uncharted & Ratchet & Clank). After this holiday season graphics will continue to get incrementally better as devs gain more experience and also as the technical hurdles start to disapear and devs have more freedom to pay attention to art and design. So basically 2-3 years from now games for all 3 systems will look better then the games out now but it won't be a world of difference.

You know, it IS true. I think Warhawk is only game that used a lot of code for the SPUs.

I'm sure you know, but my point was that Insomniac is biased and have something to gain with the PS3 succeeding. Bungie & Insomiac are now basically on the same level.

BTW, INsomniac is one of my fav devs. RFoM was the first PS3 game I bought and I'm picking up R&C soon. Loved the demo.

I never said or implied Insomniac was lying. Obviously PS3 games are going to improve, as will x360 & Wii games.

Now here's a question: Would you believe Bungie if they said this about the x360?
