"I do find this amusing though; a lot of people may not remember this but a year ago Epic was bragging about how they cost us one billion dollars." OMG! Burn!

the Major added: "They love spending other people's money, it's always easy to spend other people's money."

depends on the contract they have. and i highly dout that this little thing will cause Epic to make the game muitiplat. besides..its not like the game will be noticed on the ps3 compared to the 360 where the fanbase is.

Microsoft has Epic by the meatballs when it comes to Gears of War, and any of its sequels. Those contracts are so tight, and the money is so good, that Epic is going to work hard on Gears 2.

What Epic has been doing lately is all a publicity stunt, and they're lucky Microsoft doesn't want the negative press of making a court case out of it. "Oh we wanted those maps to be free, but big bad Microsoft is charging for them" - they conviently use the out of a contract, but I don't see them refusing their half of the DLC money - they're not exactly offering the gamers all the money they made by MS charging for some of the maps.

It looks really good to complain about the hand that's feeding you, we all go "awww... poor Epic" while Epic rakes in MS money. It's like being an Exxon shareholder and saying "yeah, gas prices are too high, poor guys, and oil companies are destroying the earth!" ... reaaaaaaally now? Then why are you taking their money?

Good for you Major Nelson, they absolutely deserve it for taking your money while burning you for publicity at the same time.

Nice post.  I, too, thought it was out of line for Epic to say that they wanted to make those maps free.  All this did was put them in the "good light" no matter what came of it.  If we get charged for the maps, Epic looks good and MS looks like the big bad wolf.  If we get them for free, we all say "thanks, Epic for sticking up to Microsoft!".

You don't hear Red Storm come out and say "well, we wanted to make those new GRAW maps for free, but Ubisoft is making us charge for them."  The publisher of the game is the one who dictates this stuff, not the developer.

Its funny how Microsoft hyped the heck out of Gears through dozens and dozens of ad campaigns, free stuff, etc. (all at their expense, not Epic's) and, yet, Epic is given all the credit for making Gears what it is.  Yes, its a great game (my #1 all time), but I seriously doubt that 4,000,000+ copies would have sold without Microsoft's involvement.  There have been great games before that never came close to what Gears has done.

Thus, for Epic to say what they did was out-of-line given their relationship with Microsoft.  I can guarantee you that Epic won't turn down the large paycheck they get from the DLC.  If they truly wanted the maps to be free, then they should donate all the money made from the DLC Map Pack to charity.

Good anwser. Why would I want to play on a half ass network anyways, I'd much rather play with 6 Million + people All with headsets, and have a unified online system.

You obviously have no understanding of Epic, or have never played one of their games prior to Gears. They never said Microsoft was "bad", they disagreed with the decision because they have always given back to the community. I'm glad they spoke out, because idiots tend to sit on the side while getting raked over the coals. Not to mention, Major Nelson is the biggest horses rear when it comes to misinformation..ie..fanboyism, the guy is a corporate spokesman, much like Rush Limbaugh is to the Republican party. Give me a break.

If the 360 only had 256 megs of ram, the PS3 would have the upper hand right now. Microsoft should thank Epic for thinking about the future of the console.

Have you read the contracts yourself. Dont be so sure there so tight. Gears 2 might not go multiplat but gears 3 probably will.

Do yo realize how much money MS makes? It's not from their gaming division at all, it's their OS for your information, which completely subsidizes the gaming division.

Here is their earnings report, the entertainment divsion is a joke compared to the rest, without them charging for maps, I don't know what they would have done:

they cant MS published Gears, gears is basically a Microsoft game made by epic. Kind of like starfox and donkey kong were nintendo but made by rare. Even when rare left nintendo still had the rights to those characters. ofcourse i could be wrong, but im pretty sure Gears is Microsofts property.

Blame whoever you want.  It doesn't changed the fact the MS published the game.  They have every right to charge for a map of a game they heavily advertised.  Publishers usually finance game development, and I personally don't know who cut the check to the devs of these maps, when they were made, etc...  It was rumored that these maps were almost ready to go at launch, which is quite possibly while the devs were still accepting financing from MS.  Odds are as a publisher aside from advertising they did the licensing, localization, layout, printing, distribution.  They may have not done all but probably most.  People are only upset because in this case the publisher happens to be MS (there are a few other companies the community would be mad at as well).  I don't see $2.50 per map as a big deal and I have no plans on purchasing the game.

Its not that Im angry at Microsoft for that. I'm angry because devs. want to release stuff free (Geometry Wars- though MS is the publisher, or take for instance Marble Blast Ultra, the content will not get released because Microsoft wants to make the devs charge US). Then they let idiots like EA charge gamers for a bunch of worthless Cr@p that was in the last gen version of the game.

But you could be getting angry at the fact that the devs who created the maps while collecting or using the contracted/financed money from MS wanted to release stuff for free that their publisher MS was paying them to make all along.

You don't hear Red Storm come out and say "well, we wanted to make those new GRAW maps for free, but Ubisoft is making us charge for them." The publisher of the game is the one who dictates this stuff, not the developer.REVENGEotSITH
Everything I've seen points to GRAW being developed in-house Ubisoft... which includes Red Storm btw, as Ubi bought them almost 10 years ago. So I think you wouldn't hear Ubisoft complaining that Ubisoft made them charge. :)
