You know that for the cost of a "big ticket" game like the new Fallout or whatever, you can get like, four or five indie games?

You know what the best part is? Those indie games are often way better. They try new stuff, they're not balanced for casuals, you can try stuff you've never done before!

I'm so happy that the indie market is big enough now that small teams can make their games without publishers squeezing out their souls.

I'm not big on indies....but some are special. I recently played Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons on PC and what a story that was....broke my little heart. With indies there can be more risks taken with gameplay and stories.

Depends on the game, just like any other kind of game. Indie is neither a genre nor an accurate big label broad brushstroke term. It refers to development budget and resources, that's it.

Personally, I like some of these games, and am indifferent to most of them.

I'm not going to say indie games are generally better than AAA games or vice versa, but yeah there are definitely some great indie titles out there.

Shovel Knight is easily one of my favorite games this gen, and the Plague Knight DLC only helped further that.

Not all Indies are great, like with the others, there's good ones and there's trash.

some are surprisingly good, some are waaay overrated, just like everything else people can be just as pretentious about them

they do offer hope the industry can grow out of a crash of AAA publishing/development that might be on the horizon

Should check out Prison Architect, just came out from early release with version 1.0.. Have heard rave reviews about the game, only reason why I haven't gotten it yet my self is due to a enormous backlog of games.

Good.

Its great that you enjoy Indies.

Keep supporting them so that we can see more diverse ideas flowing into the medium.

The major problem with indies these days is that they're over saturated...just look at the steam home page.

Its takes quite a bit of digging to find one that's enjoyable.

I usually dont care for Indie games much, its like with mobile games and story focused games, i just get bored after awhile. The oversaturation of Indie games is deadly for this industry, one company makes a good game and all the sudden you got 300 Indie teams remixing the crap out of it. I have a few Indie games that i loved a lot, but you couldnt trade me 100 Indie games for my one copy of Splatoon.

Indie games are cool though, they are just in need of major regulation. I like how Nintendo regulates them, log onto eShop and youll find a great selection of sweet Indie games. Nintendo helped me fall in love with Indie games back on Wii and DS.

Unfortananly the culture has become proliferated with walking simulators and muton chop wearing pink haired hipsters who read Oscar Wilde attention whoreing on the on the Twitter.

Overall: This is a dark age for indie gaming.

Not accurate imho. Star Citizen have the budget comparable to a triple A production and th resources but are quite literally entirely funded by gamers. Yet they are through and through an indie production.

INdie imho would refer to studios that have no publisher funds or outside investors pullling the strings.

Indie games are great. They are also very cheap and adorable. I've actually never paid money for indie games since most all of them are free.

Some definitely are great. But I don't buy new, expensive hardware to NOT play games that use it close to fully. I wont ever prefer the small indies to the entertainment I get from my major releases that I research and end up enjoying.

If you're getting something out of them, then I'm happy for you.

But I haven't really gotten into them myself.

I think I prefer AAA games because they have much more depth - and don't insult my intelligence like some indie games do.

@thereal25: There you go. Many indie games have some cool and fresh ideas but most of them are implemented in a gimmicky way. And you can only ride on a gimmick for so long...By the time you get to finish the game, all its novelty will already become tedious or at best just "normal". That's where the bigger budget would've helped. So, in a nutshell both Indies and AAA games have their pros and cons and neither of them has a definitive edge in everything over the other one.

@Salt_The_Fries: Yes, and I like to think that if certain "risky" or "innovative" concepts are successful and popular in indie games, then hopefully companies with larger budgets can use similar ideas.

But of course they'd have to do it carefully to avoid copyright issues.

Come to think of it, I think the main draw card of indie games is the fact that they are generally pick up and and play affairs.

Whereas big AAA games can seem kind of daunting to get involved with - not only because they are generally so long, but also that they can be quite complex.

Nah. They can be much more creative and interesting, but are rarely executed as well.

They have their place, they'll never be as good as a top AAA game though.

Other than their sources of funding, I don't view them differently than any other games, but I will say that Azure Striker Gunvolt and Freedom Planet are my favorite gen 8 titles atm though.

Nah, there are good ones - but the proportion of really good indie games is far lower than for retail. Like someone said, for every one that is great... there ends up being like 300 clones. There's no barrier to entry for indie games and you end up having to wade through piles of trash. I actually think the "hype machine" for indie games is even worse than for retail.

Indie games is to video games what "art-house" is to films. There might be a few masterpieces in there, but it's mostly just pretentious trash or "look at me, I'm hip" stuff that in reality, isn't that good, it's just a community of people patting themselves on the back for how "cool" they envision themselves as being.

9 out of 10 indies are trash, but the ones that are good... oh boy, they are really fucking good.
